“I saw, with Tom, what it meant to build a movement, what organizing meant. He realized that what needed to be focused on was moving power out of the hands of the super rich and the corporations, into the hands of people the way it should be in a democracy. So, the Campaign for Economic Democracy evolved. We knew that we wanted to spread a message throughout the country. It was difficult because we had to raise so much money, and it was during a recession. So Tom and I talked about this and we thought, ‘Well, let’s start a business that will fund the work.’ …And then one day, I suddenly thought… ‘The Workout.’ If there’s one thing I understand, it’s working out. One camera. There were no teleprompters or anything like that. I wrote the script sitting on a floor of a hotel room. We did our own hair and makeup. I mean, it was a spit and a prayer. And the rest is history.”

“And in 2017, we STILL refuse to be controlled by a sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot.” | Lily Tomlin, Dolly Parton and Jane Fonda, Emmys 2017
Best Emmy moments.
Good luck to amazing Lily Tomlin at tonight’s Emmy Awards!
83 never looked so cool. #maggiesmith #damemaggiesmith. Also as I was at my table outside, minding my own business and writing, I hear a voice, look to the side and there’s #ianmckellen, and five minutes later along comes #patrickstewart. I love Maggie and DontBeSoDroopy! :)
Maggie in this interview looks very lovely. In her youth was a beautiful woman. It's a shame that she is known only for roles of old ladies
I think one if the unfortunate consequences of Maggie career post A Room with a View, is that she has been somewhat been caught in a cycle of playing women older than her, and women in period costume and wigs. I have my own theory as to why (age is heavily involved) but the net result has been that most a) have no idea that Maggie was a redhead, and b) she had the most varied of careers before the industry became its usual lazy and sexist self and didn’t know what to do with her from her middle age onwards.
