Words can’t express my love for Hocus Pocus - how has it been 30 years?! As a child, it made me fall head over heals with all things Halloween. I remember acting out scenes in elementary school, watching it with friends during high school after fall nights at football games and bonfires, and the many countless times I’ve watched on my own — there aren’t many movies I can watch over and over but this one I love more and more with each watch.
I always felt that the movie connected to me on a deeper level than others around me. It was more than a movie, it was a part of me. Max and Dani are my Sister and I. Jay and “Ice” were the bully’s from school. Thackery Binx is the first magical black kitty I fell in love with. And so on and so forth…
Here we are, 30 years later, and I love it even more. It keeps the child’s soul within me filled with joy and has introduced me to amazing new and wonderful friends. It just encapsulates everything I hold near and dear to my heart and the things and people that are now in my life because of this little ole’ movie is mind blowing — it really is so magical.
Even though I’ve been able to take part in many fun events over the years and have been blessed to meet some of the amazing cast, many of my most cherished memories are the quieter ones — sitting with my kitties and watching it during spooky season, that spark of light I feel when I meet someone who admires the movie just as much as I do, that happiness I feel when I see all the fun merchandise that we have so much of now.
I could go on and on and on — and I will, until my days here are over. With the recent passing of my beloved black cat, Salem Binx, this past week — I will, once again, lean into this movie to help me grieve and tug at my heartstrings in an even deeper way moving forward.
That being said, Happy 30th Anniversary Hocus Pocus! Thanks for introducing little Andrew to a world of magic and giving me something to believe in to help me get through this thing we call life — you’re much more than a movie to me — there just aren’t any words to define the feeling — ✨✨✨
