Magic: the Gathering - Got Gâteau ?
Lissë Confeitaria Artística, with a coffee / desert shop located in São Paulo, Brazil makes exquisitely excellent custom treats. This creation has us wanting to jump on a plane - but as airfare from Toronto, Canada to the shop may cost about $1,400, we’ll need to inquire if they can FedEx that up here.
So you want to make a MTG Color Identity Headband
This is helpful for me, as I make my first one, so I figured I’d put it down for others - though, I’m going to focus on crocheting, I know you can generalize this to knitting, sewing, etc.
Step 1: What’s the circumference of your head? It’s simple, but you’ve got to know it. I’m 21.5 inches, and I’m rounding down to 21 for ease, and so it fits more snuggly.
Step 2: What’s your color identity? I’m Bant, White/Blue/Green, so I want my headband to contain those colors - and, additionally, I’m going to work in Ravnican guild symbols as well as I can where each color switches. Each third will be 7 inches, and I don’t want the symbols to take over, so i’ll make them two inches on either half, and i’ll make my headband 4 inches thick, giving me nice, square regions for each symbol.
Step 3: Crochet a test swatch! I don’t normally do this, but It’s important for this project to figure out how many stitches will go into each inch. Crocheting a 10 by 10 square in the yarn I’m using, with the hook i’m using, will help here - that said, the yarn should all be the same type, etc. I use Red Heart Super Saver because it’s good for plushes like I normally make, and it’s all the same size which avoids sizing issues.
Step 4: Diagram out Everything. How many rows each section needs, how wide you want and how many stitches that will be, how large you want your Guild symbols (or Clan symbols, of course) to be; I made something like this for each symbol, with a mental note of where the color changed - right in the middle.
You’ll notice how sketchy it is, and the crossings out and such; this is just a basic guide! Where you want colors to be, and so on.
Step 5: pick the middle of a color to start in, and get started! I decided on 3 inches between each symbol, so 12 rows, which worked out to 6 rows in white, my starting color, before starting in the lower left of that sketchy pattern. After finishing the color changes, and now in dark blue, I went another six rows and wove in all my ends from the Azorius Symbol, before crocheting the other 6 dark blue rows and starting the Simic Symbol. You don’t have to weave in ends, and if you’re not sure about the fit it’s better that you don’t, but I wanted to keep things nice and neat. So, from
to
this. Nice and neat and (relatively) recognizable.
So, for my Bant self, I made an Azorius symbol, a Simic symbol,
and a Selesnyan symbol.
I also found it helpful, as above, to use a different color to make the symbols, though just using the two that will join, and switching which is background and which is the symbol half way, probably would look pretty cool.
And hey! After about one full day’s work (no joke, that fast), you’ve got a nice, functional headband!
(Sorry for the poor pics, though)

IT’S HAPPENIING! GIVING AWAY 2 PAIRS OF GUILD SOCKS, chosen at random from this post’s rebloggers! They’re also for sale on our Etsy store! (backstory below)
A friend and I went overboard on Izzet and Dimir-inspired socks (our 2 favorite guilds). We made about 20 pairs for ourselves, but our playgroup has been asking for some… so we went overboard and made a bunch. Then we got to thinking… this whole sock gig is really fun! So, my friend and I are taking some time off of our main jobs to try something insane: starting a small indie sock company, just making designs that nerds like us want!
But we have no idea where to really take it from here. We’ve always wanted to wear our favorite guilds (check!) but we’d ideally shy away from just sockifying guilds and set symbols… We’d love to hear some thoughts on what to make next. Any ideas? Already planning on boba socks and japanese foot armor (design TBD, unless someone wants to test their luck)!
This is so cool! With long socks, perhaps characters from Magic? Either in pixel form or not.
Tagging @artcrit for that sock game.

Magic: the Gathering - Jeska Cosplay
Angela Bermúdez knocking this kick-arse cosplay right outta the park.
Story time -
Jeska was an Otarian barbarian along with her brother, Kamahl. Due to the tumultuous happenings of her life she was called Thrice Touched by Infinity. She lived with her family in Balthor Rockfist’s tribe, spending much of her time learning from the dwarves rather than the other humans that made up her tribe. For this, she was slightly shunned for her dwarven-born opinions. She lived peacefully until Kamahl left to seek his fortunes in the gladitorial pits of Cabal City. Later, concerned for Kamahl’s wellbeing, Jeska and Balthor followed Kamahl’s footsteps. When Kamahl returned to the village, he was deeply enthralled by the influence of the Mirari, and during an assault Kamahl lost control and went berserk, slaying most of his kin and striking a horrific blow against Jeska. This shattered the Mirari’s spell, and in deep grief, Kamahl sought out someone who could save the dying Jeska. She was left in the care of the centaur Seton, but captured by Braids and brought to the Cabal Patriarch.

I posted all the parts and directions you need for your own 3D print here: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1778450
Design:
- Based off “Aether riveter” concept art by Cynthia Sheppard. Though in reality riveters most often use pneumatic pressure to shoot pieces of metal, this is a rotary tool used primarily as a drill. “Shine bright, bolts tight”–and keep those pesky gremlins outta your aether! It shows up in other different forms in a few cards in the set, but I particularly liked this version from concept art. - This is a handheld version that can be clipped to the belt of a Renegade inventor. Additionally, it’s modified for greater durability, hand size, and ability to hold (and change) batteries and lights. Since it’s a handheld version, there’s also a mounting area in the back for an aether storage canister.
Making it: - Print the parts with support, flat sides down. I used ABS filament at 15% infill. (Warning: remove support material carefully on the filigree surrounding the tube since filigree is delicate!) - Use your choice of smoothing method (auto body filler-primer, sandpaper, XTC mixture etc.) to smooth out the surface - Paint - Blue polycarbonate tube (http://www.tapplastics.com/product/plastics/plastic_rods_tubes_shapes/lamp_guards/275) - Screw parts together using 4-40 screws and securing nuts.
Optional section for lights and motion: 6V DC motor (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CFSZAHS/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1) 6V battery holder (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GYWNM5I/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1) SPDT switch (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007QAJMHO/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1), LED string (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MPDTXTY/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1) - Screw the switch into the slot on the front handle, place batteries into the hollow part of the front handle, secure motor to motor mount, glue front spinner into the red motor tip, solder wires to motor. - Wrap string of lights in bubble wrap or the light diffusing material of your choice and insert into the lighting tube. Make sure the battery pack’s switch is exposed so you can turn it on and off.
Hope you like it!
