Send “Rumor has it...” And a rumor about my muse
fun little experiment with some style changes. Solas and Dorian gossiping at the Winter Palace
also, i need you all to know: dorian is doing math. in thedas. he is doing physics and mathematics when he is doing magic.
yes, creation magic can do haste and there are multiple ways to do slow (ice magic and entropy come to mind immediately), but dorian is doing all of this with math. he said spirits are cool but what if i made magic a science and then invented time travel*.
so like. no one's doing what he's doing unless they're also doing math. and who wants to do math on the fly when someone's trying to stab you.
*alexius was also there. and it was also only possible due to the veil being weak/breach/elven orb
it's so dangerous to ask dorian what he's thinking.
not because it's naughty but because you'll get a rant on math, physics, how those intercept with magic, obscure magical theory or history, and nowadays, socioeconomics or political theory.
for an hour. at minimum.
IT WAS A SITUATION OF YOU LAUGHED OR YOU STARTED CRYING, RIGHT? There was a joke here about pencil necks and only needing one hand to do the strangling, but he wasn't going to be the one to make it, mostly for the fact that he was…Nearly completely positive Dorian would actually kill him, and he'd probably deserve it.
“I do look good in gold,” he offered instead, but graciously (graciously) relenting to letting Dorian have his last little look-see at his arm before he, too, disappeared into the aether. He hadn't said so in so many words, no, but dissolving the Inquisition, at least on paper, was the right move, and he was going to stand by that, but he had only just recently come to the startling, obvious realization that…Once this was done, it was going to be down to just himself and Varric. To returning to Kirkwall. To face the gargantuan task of inventorying the family home - something he had purposely not made eye contact with the entire time he'd been at Haven. And then Skyhold. And Arno had elected to stay with the mages here, in Ferelden, instead of returning and…He honestly couldn't blame him.
Varric was going to be busy, running the city. And Tony-
So yeah. Jokes.
“It's okay, I've got an idea for a replacement. Since I'll have so much time on my hands.”
"Of course you do. Always tinkering away, aren't you?" Dorian shook his head, his smile a bit wry as he leaned down to re-examine Tony's arm. It was healing well. He knew it was healing well--between himself and Vivienne, no finer mages could do anything less than perfection. There was no way to regrow the arm, but short of that, he could make sure that it was healed, the joint performing well, and ready for... well, whatever was to come next.
"Remember to do those exercises I mentioned. Magic healed the tissue damage, but it'll be your responsibility to maintain the shape from now on, like any other part of you." Dorian tucked the bandages back together before leaning back. Try as Tony might with his jokes, Dorian had a good idea on what was going on in that head of is--likely the same thing going through his. This group of merry fighters was breaking up, each retreating back to their own endeavors. Dorian had put off aspects of his father's funeral for so long that he'd actually gotten a letter from his mother. Formal as always, but reading between the lines, he knew her icy fury was behind each word. He had to go home.
"You know, I was going to save this for my last night. Find a lovely box to put it in, make a big show of handing it over..." He shrugged before pulling a small crystal from his pocket. It glittered like a round fragment of clouded, seafoam green glass, the cuts leaving the pendant smooth. It had a simple chain, something that would be easy to hide beneath a shirt. Dorian held it up so it caught the light. "It's a sending crystal. Neat little bit of magic--they come in matching resonate pairs. They can send messages back and forth over any distance."
As he held this one out to Tony, he pulled his own from beneath his shirt, letting it bounce against his chest.
@valorcorrupt: "You look like someone who eats bananas for the shape, not the flavor." random asks
His smile is sugary sweet. "I believe the phrase is, 'takes one to know one,' dear."
i don't have any deep thoughts about it rn, i just want to remind everyone that dorian has a mabari named adrian. it was a gift from @valorcorrupt as a joke, but dorian loves adrian. he's getting up there in age by the time of datv, but he's as much a shadow dragon as anyone else. he also wears fancy coats that match dorian's outfits and will bite anyone's hand if they try to take it off of him.
thank you for sending assassins after me btw i really needed that. it meant a lot to me

hi i'm dean and i actually care a lot about the fact that the majority of necromancy has nothing to do with blood magic. most of canon supports this too:
dorian says he does not do blood magic. if necromancy were blood magic, why would he so blatantly lie?
in dai, the spell descriptions for necromancy explicitly state that it uses spirits to manipulate the feelings of others or cause effects (like explosions)
solas and cole both comment that necromancy is the art of manipulating spirits--actually, not even spirits, but fragments of wisps that could become spirits into doing things.
the majority of spells you are doing are actually from the school of entropy or from the spirit school--which is a school separate from that of blood magic. blood magic, as a school of magic, is focused mainly on the direct manipulation of others, first and foremost. the secondary ability is fueling spells.
blood magic might be a powerful way to fuel spells or control others, but it also weakens one's connection to the fade, making it harder to connect to spirits or cast magic in the traditional ways (mana or lyrium). solas cites this as one of his main reasons for not using blood magic in dai
i cannot emphasize this enough, but blood magic always has unintended, unpredictable consequences. the most common forms of this are the weakening of the veil, summoning of demons when that was absolutely not wanted, or possession of the mage casting it. but in the last flight, (spoilers) using blood magic to give the griffons the blight made them stronger and fight harder past the point when they would die, but they also died faster, got too aggressive, and eventually the blight mutated into a disease that infected all the remaining griffons. it also completely fucked up isseya, who got blighted immortality as a result. (end spoiler) with blood magic bringing some unpredictability to it, you wouldn't want to base entire complex systems of magic off of it
the inquisition, a chantry off-shoot organization, would not let the inquisitor learn blood magic and the rest of the world would certainly not be super cool and normal about it
i'll relate this back to dorian then, to make it relevant for my blog specifically.
dorian knows how to use blood magic, and has done it under very specific circumstances--those being a matter of tradition or heritage in specific ceremonies. for example, i count the final conversation by david gaider as among my canon, so the little ceremony dorian does as part of the funerary rites to have a last conversation with the deceased is something he knows and will do--but only with his blood and never another's, and never outside of a specific ceremonial need.
specifically, he looks down on blood mages or anyone who uses blood magic. to him, it is a sign of weak character, weak mind, and little magical talent of their own. his father was the one to instill those morals into him and alexius shared that opinion (which is why their later betrayals actually hurt). for dorian, its' simple: if you don't have the magic to learn spellcraft under your own power, pick up another way of fighting. he might be sympathetic if it was a true last resort to save one's life or that of other's, but you'll lose a lot of respect in his eyes.
My gift for @nightwingspark for the @santa-age gift exchange! Happy holidays! c:
hey does anyone else ever think about archon!dorian and lose their minds
WHY WOULD YOU HIDE THESE IN THE TAGS OP
Sometimes Magister Dorian Pavus also needs a break from his duties, during which he thinks about those who mean the most to him
@unascended: is that a smirk? are you smirking at me? send memes
The tadpoles seemed to be having no great effect on the ones around him, at least not on their behavior. They'd mentioned--and he'd talked to Gale at length about it--how this group was now mentally connected, as if by spell, to each other. They'd caught and put in a jar one of the tadpoles they'd come across, Dorian having studied it in much of his down time. It seemed interested in him, mostly due to him being a warm, living body, he was sure, but occasionally it'd perk more towards one of the other party members.
But aside from observing it's behavior, there wasn't much he could glean from it. A twist of magic here, a prod there, nothing really seemed to give him further insight. Even reading over Halsin's extensive notes hadn't enlightened him further. For a druid, he had the inquisitive mind of a wizard--
Astarion's voice cut through Dorian's train of thought. He'd apparently been staring at him while wrapped up in his tadpole-related thoughts.
"I've been told I have naturally upturned lips." Dorian put his chin in his hand, looking over at Astarion. "Why? Admiring them?"
