THIS is shrimpteresting because like. be thingol. you don’t know what an orc is yet. see orcs. think, maybe it’s those other elves? think, probably it’s fine to attack them with weapons. this is followed quite soon by ‘the sindar were well armed, and they drove off all the creatures of evil’ so like. they did do that. me when kin (?) slaying (!) is literally ok i guess

Tolkien Siblings Week rides again!
Immeasurably happy to announce that Tolkien Siblings Week, your annual hub for fanworks of all types centered on all sibling sets in all Tolkien works, is returning for its second year in fall of 2026! It will be running from the same dates as last year (November 23rd-29th), and operating on the same guidelines.
In terms of logistics, optional prompts will be released on June 23rd, leaving you a bountiful five months in which to brainstorm and work your creative magic. An ao3 collection will go live in the last few weeks leading up to the event; we ask that if you plan to add to the collection, you hold back on posting your work until then (although sharing previews or snippets is just fine).
Not much to say at the moment beyond that, except that it's great to be back, and we're hoping to welcome many new faces this year among our beloved returners. In the meantime, any burning questions can be sent via the askbox, messages, or in replies. And all reblogs are of course awfully appreciated as we work to get the word out ♡
Much love till the 23rd! We hope you're as excited as we are.

i got tagged by @abomination-unto-nuggan on an unfortunately busy day, so here's the beginning of my "maedhros gets an abortion" fic, one day late:
Aredhel's chambers were, as they most often were, empty of all servants. Most of the family would have some handmaiden or footman around, or a cleaner, or whoever else. But Aredhel had loved her privacy since she was old enough to stomp her feet and scream that she wanted the governess out. It was one of the things that made her the most useful conspirator when one had a problem that required discretion. Maedhros, knowing she hated all kinds of formality (especially when they kept people from getting to the point), asked as soon as he entered, “Have you any herbs that can kill a babe?” “Aye,” was her answer as she continued her whittling, sitting at her desk. “Did my brother act recklessly, as is his wont?” “You know enough of procreation to know the blame was not his alone.” In fact, the greater part of it most likely fell on Maedhros's shoulders. He was the one that carelessly assumed that the torments and starvation of Angband, along with the steps he had taken to be a man, had left his womb barren. Alas, no.
and i'll be tagging @irnina, @elronds-library @melestasflight @ladysterndust @annarobots @i-am-a-lonely-visitor @tanoraqui
thinking something about annatar as a creation of sauron’s, crafted and tested and prototyped like any other work. cyborg annatar, if you will—a piece pulled from here, a piece from there; smile and arms not his own, eyes from an earlier model. his body is perfect and not quite right because being annatar is not quite right. he is every dead dissected thrall and in angband there are neatly numbered files of notes and sketches for his hair, his teeth, how he would walk, the exact cadence of his voice. a thousand calculations and years of blood went into the curve of his cheek; even his imperfections are precise, minute, terrible: at once the machine and the ghost living in it.

Hello, Tolkien Fandom!
I am considering running a trans-themed Tolkien fandom fic exchange later this year, and I want to gauge the fandom's interest in an event like this! Please give me your honest answers so I can figure out how best to run this :)
Additionally, if you are interested in ANY kind of trans-themed Tolkien event, even if you don't want to participate in a fic exchange style of event, I'd love it if you could take the survey anyway - I have some questions about different kinds of events you might prefer instead.
There are only two required questions, though I'd appreciate if you'd answer the optional ones as well.
You do not have to be trans yourself to take the survey! This event will be focused on trans characters, trans headcanons, and trans themes, but will not be exclusive to trans fans. Cis fans and folks who otherwise don't use the "trans" label are welcome to participate, so long as you are respectful and supportive of trans identities!
Anyone being transphobic regarding this event (or just in general) will be blocked. If this isn't your thing, you can take the survey and answer "no," or else just move on with your life.
📕 please!

I have this idea for a Gwindor-centric fic exploring his return to Nargothrond; it's many years old now, and each time I come back to it, I have to rework the way I'm building the politics and relationships between Túrin/Gwindor, Gwindor/Finduilas, the three of them to better align with my changing understanding of the text.
Nargothrond is great for conflict because it simultaneously is this magical untouched deceptively peaceful kingdom ... home to populations who have known war remotely (finrod's people) and recently (orodreth's people) ... could be argued to have greater cultural mixing (noldor, sindar, men) than other noldorin settlements ... but it's built on the forcibly coopted bones of a petty dwarf city. Everyone there acts like the racial/ social politics are ok until something happens to shake things up - and Gwindor returning, severely altered, with a human in tow shakes things up.

I'm going to give Maglor a teratoma.
If you don't know what a teratoma is, it's a tumor that exhibits some odd growth characteristics because it's made of multiple different tissue types - they grow teeth, and hair, etc. Some develop a sort of yolk sac. Fetiform teratomas are thus called because they may appear fetal in shape (ex: bone growth that looks like a spine). It's most common to have an ovarian teratoma, but they form elsewhere too. Teratomas are generally benign but their presence can trigger a form of autoimmune encephalitis. Ideally, if the teratoma is surgically removed, the body doesn't produce more autoantibodies, and the encephalitis resolves. In the mean time, the encephalitis triggers increasingly disregulated behaviors, progressing into nervous system dysfunction and catatonia.
Hey, here's a fun new game. Put "📓" or some other version of a book emoji into my inbox and I'll explain the plot of a fanfiction that I haven't written but daydream about.
Something about Gilraen's story perturbs me so much, like it genuinely unsettles me. Her being too young to marry while Arathorn is a stern man of full age. Marrying him anyway in order to, essentially, function as incubator for the line of Isildur and ensure an heir is born. Her being widowed less than five years after her marriage – one of the most abject states for a woman in that time. Forced to live in a strange place far away from her people because that's the only way she can provide for her son.
Even in Rivendell we have indication that she wasn't entirely at ease; she says to Aragorn upon discovering his feelings for Arwen, Therefore I am afraid; for without the good will of Master Elrond the Heirs of Isildur will soon come to an end. But I do not think that you will have the good will of Elrond in this matter. She seems to be very aware that they are entirely at the mercy of Elrond's whim and doesn't want to risk losing his favour.
Before she dies, she says she's aged by care and cannot face the darkness of [their] time, and when Aragorn tries to comfort her and tell her to have hope she replies with one of the saddest lines in the whole legendarium and disappears from the story to die alone.
Like I'm sorry but I worry about her like she's my FRIEND.
Thinking again abt edain sex workers developing a kind of cult (in the greco roman sense of the word) around vana and varda. vana as a personification of youth and beauty and varda as an all seeing protectress of those who work frequently by night. swers maybe having little symbols that they wear, like a star shaped amulet or flowers stitched onto clothes, and small altars to vana and varda in their homes. idk is this anything
