meowdy, and here's a little art challenge for december my minnows and i have been cooking up! i know month long art challenges can be kind of intimidating to some people, so i figured making a week long one could encourage people to give longer challenges a try!

Go my Creeper redesigns !!!! Timeline + explanation under the cut ^u^

This is all going off the idea that Creeper is, at least in part if not entirely, Jack Ryder's subconscious brought to life by Proteus' or Dr. Yatz's weird shapeshifting nanotechnology- and therefore, subject to change, as Jack's own self perception and interpretation of the Creeper changes. The first design follows Ditko's idea closely- the Creeper, then, is a costume Jack can put on and take off and which allows him to do tangible good. In this form he's both more muscular and taller than Jack, cutting a traditionally heroic figure who can leap off of buildings and wrestle armed criminals. He's bright and fun and charming and wacky and just a little bit off-kilter, but bearing what he himself describes as an "essentially sweet nature".

The second design is a representation of Jack's attempt to repress the memories of everything that happened to him- Eclipso, getting buried alive, Proteus (and poor, poor Rip), losing his job.... He's somber and silent and gaunt, and sticks to the shadows except for in small flashes. Looks the most like Jack's fantasy recollection of his mother, the other big trauma he's learned to ignore.

The third design is flat out the Creeper volume 1 creeper, who is the start of my fondness for the character and the star of all my analyses :) except i make him not as vibrant as the original, as to indicate that he's note Quite as well as you'd think- there's still conflict there, rejected as he is in the face of Jack's dismissal.

After 1997 resolves this inner conflict, i think its rather silly to have Jack go back to disliking the parts of himself to make up the Creeper? So instead the main problem becomes trying to balance both aspects of himself in a way that's comfortable. This is what the fourth design explores- a failed attempt at convergence, but which ultimately feels like a very poor compromise. Sort of trying to emulate the first design, with the build and the shorter fur and hair, but looking remarkably less effortless and natural. I'd place this one at around Outsiders era, but Outsiders is a deeply, deeply evil comic in every regard, so maybe i shan't.

And finally, a comfortable resolution! With a personality like the Creeper's, the only way out is trough- so, a resolution to their arc is to dial everything about them up to the maximum and to OWN IT! Inspired by the awesome Everything of RYDR and the Galactic Creeper, the fifth-and-final design has a MASSIVE coat of impossible fur, huge shiny black claws, opera gloves and over the knee boots, long, wavy hair, a gold fang for the heck of it- they've taken every silly, outlandish design choice from the Creepers we've seen over the years and made them sillier and bigger and more outlandish. I really wanted to invoke a very specific type of older, rich aunt vibe, as well as some Renaissance camp in the tilted hat and hanging furs- something i think is underutilized in Ryder as a whole is how dramatic he is, and how his first idea for a bit to run with is "magical otherworldly being who speaks in haughty ye olde English"- and that Creeper liked it enough to steal it and run with it, even trying to use it on Jack, who by all means CAME UP with the bit. Also, the huge fur mirrors Jack's own trench coat and hat!!!!

It came to my attention that there was no TfGraves week! Shuttering and actually flabbergasted I decided that it would be entertaining to do it this year and see where it goes!

Wouldn't it be really really cool if Odyssey tf was a runaway member of the Ora templars? Like, maybe he was basically Sona's predecessor who was born with the ability to "see through the Ora" (destiny) and manipulate it to Some extent but it was miserable so he ran away, maybe to be with Graves? And has been living under a fake name and constantly wears a mask and whatnot. And then maybe the reason he's working for Karma in the story is bc Graves got caught by the same ppl, so he's like. Using the premise getting the Templars back to get the support he needs to break in and get his partner back. Bonus points if Sona keeps cursing his name bc she's heard Horrible Things about the previous Ora wielder who abandoned them and he's like. 😐 that's great ma'am.
