When Martha Steward II chose to marry a No-Maj, she accepted that her ties to the wizarding world were cut. Though her family still loved her, she began to distance herself, far away from the painful reminders that she did not entirely belong. As her life continued, this proved to be a good thing â with the anti magic sentiments rising in the country, Martha was able to quietly fade into a life that was not connected to the people being hunted. She kept her past quiet, and as generations of Stewards went on, it became nearly forgotten. Marthaâs children grew and married, and those children grew and married, and so it went. Everyone seemed to be just like her, non magical, and living happily.
Most of the family remained in Massachusetts through the generations. They were well established and respected, a long line of lawyers, educated almost exclusively at Harvard University. When Christopher Stewardâs turn came, he was no different. While completing his undergraduate course work he was introduced to the daughter of a family friend, and from the time he and Caroline Walker met, everything fell into place.
Caroline was raised in Augusta, Georgia, the daughter of a long line of wealthy landowners. Raised in the lap of luxury, she was the picture perfect southern belle. As she grew she became a treasure that many desired, and made her way through various suitors with ease. It wasnât until she met Christopher Steward on a trip north with her family that she knew where she was meant to be. The two found ways to make a cross country relationship work while Christopher attended school, and at the end of it all, Christopher had a law degree, a wife, and a new home.
The couple soon welcomed their first daughter. Caroline had received word from her mother in the morning that her family magnolias were beginning to bloom, and that evening, she was welcoming her own Magnolia Caroline Steward into the world. Maggie, as she was soon coined by those around her, grew up with ease. Her parents taught her to be a proper lady, and she wanted for very little. She was a sweet child with a sunny disposition, charming everyone she met with a smile and her wide eyes.
It was at age ten that Maggieâs life began to change. Her mother was found to be expecting again, a shock to the entire family. After Maggie, Christopher and Caroline had tried for more children, to no avail. The shock continued when they found out Caroline was expecting twins. Soon, Zinnia and Walker were added to the family. And precisely on her eleventh birthday, while looking at photos of the magnolias in her grandmotherâs yard, Maggie was told that she was a witch.
That fall she moved into Ilvermorny, and was quickly sorted into Horned Serpent. She made fast friends on her first night at school, who didnât seem to care that her family had no magic. As the first week of school was winding down though, Maggieâs world was once again turned on its head. She was called to the headmaster's office and dutifully went, brain wracking for any memory of a rule she may have broken. What was waiting for her sent the entire American wizarding community into a tailspin.
Maggieâs entire family line had been traced back, showing that she was a direct descendent of Martha Steward II, and through her, James Steward and Isolt Sayre. This linked her to Salazar Slytherin as well, and in a few brief moments, the young girl felt her entire world shift. There were suddenly reporters attempting to show up at the school, and owls coming in almost daily with requests for interviews. The staff of Ilvermorny helped her to handle it, and attempted to aid her as she tried to settle back into a normal school life.
Her parents were kept unaware of the weight their connection, only told that more information had been discovered on their ancestors were in fact connected to the wizarding world, explaining Maggieâs previously unanswerable development of magic. As time went on, Maggie was not unaware of the tensions rising within the wizarding world.
With the ringing in of 1978 came the ringing in of another change in the life of the Steward family. Christopher was offered a promotion in the law firm, but this promotion required a move to London. Her parents immediately began making plans for the move, much to Maggieâs avail â she knew how things were going on the other side of the world, and knew the dangers that lie there for not only her, but her entire family. She was beginning to notice signs of magic in both of her siblings, and wanted to stay as far away from England as possible.
Christopher and Caroline did not agree, though, and by mid February, the family was ready to move. Maggie was faced with turmoil â if she stayed and finished her education at Ilvermorny, she would be far away from the twins, who were potentially entering a dangerous situation as magical children of non magical parents. If she went, she would potentially be putting her own self in harmâs way. When all was said and done, she accompanied her parents, and started her final months of schooling at Hogwarts.
From the moment she stepped foot in the castle there was debate surrounding her. In the Headmasterâs Office the Sorting Hat faced conflict. Maggieâs ancestry should have immediately placed her in Slytherin. It was the house of her family, and the girl had plenty of ambition to boot. But, she was still a muggle born, and after much consideration and discussion, it was decided that she would spend her few months at Hogwarts in the Gryffindor house. She had already shown immense bravery in her choices, and it was easy to see the lionâs heart beating inside of her. Still, there were whispers about her. An heir of Salazar Slytherin should have been placed in his house.
For her own part, Maggie tried to shrug off the whispers that seemed to accompany her everywhere she went. She was happy to be back with her longtime friend Savannah, even if their houses still separated them. With only a few months of schooling left, it seemed that she could handle anything that might come her way, and make decisions for the future after graduation.
Life is not so easy for Magnolia Caroline Steward, though. The world is in turmoil and sides have been clearly drawn. Something is stirring within her, and while she cannot identify it just yet, it is what will cause her to take her own stand, and make her own name. Â
