The line we lost from Tethys-Gerik’s A support

So while looking up all the mentions of alcohol in FE8 for another upcoming post, I made this discovery. One of Tethys’ lines was completely cut out from the English version, probably because it was too suggestive for the localizers to comfortably keep in.

English:

Gerik: Hm…good idea. Thanks, Tethys. I think I’ll sleep soundly tonight. Tethys: Good. You know, Chief, I’m really happy.

Japanese:

Gerik: ･･･ああ、そうだな。ありがとう、テティス。今夜からは、よく眠れそうだ･･･ Tethys: うん。でも、もし眠り辛かったら、いつでも声をかけてね。添い寝するから。･･････隊長。私、今とっても幸せよ。

That boldfaced section in Tethys’ line is what was removed. What she’s saying there is “If you have trouble sleeping, call me. I’ll sleep with you.”

What’s interesting is that 添い寝 (the “sleep with you” part) can actually be taken platonically. While it can be taken in a sexual way, it is also used to refer to co-sleeping (where parents and their children sleep in the same bed) or even for friends that share a bed without engaging in any sexual activities.

However, I guess it was still too much for the localization and got scrapped. Well, now you know.
