hey! my boyfriend and i are getting into second life, & i was wondering if you had any tips on how to make such cute avatars ^^ it's probably much easier if you're used to it, but all the avatar stuff is super confusing to me :-(

hi anon!! totally understandable that it feels like a lot for a newbie - because it kinda is. most of my friends who i've inducted over the past year have been totally whomped by the amount of stuff you have to learn with very little clear on-boarding tutorials, it feels like it does rely on you having a friend already into the game to coach you...

but! there are a lot of great creators who have made extensive resources for newbies. i highly recommend this thorough guide by sofa/yogurt200. it'll take you through most of the menus and explain essential basics like how to use the edit and build menus and into much more. there is also a guide to building a free or even budget avatar by cadnomori here. one tip i can give here is that prioritizing using content which is mod will open much more possibilities and lead you to much less stress.

most of this should give you a basic idea of building an avatar with parts you can acquire or build with in game prims. of course, if you want to start making your own mesh or textures, that's another wheelhouse. any modern blender skills will help you a lot, and there's many useful free extensions that exist which do what in the past only expensive software like substance painter could achieve for free within blender. making your own content in a UGC game that encourages remixing and building on others content is honestly so fun and very rewarding - and feels like my biggest tip for making an avi that stands out - there's something unique to only you! i tried to keep this brief but if you want any in depth info i can give about something specific, ie. what anime/stylized heads exist and how easy i'd rate their mod-ability, or info about painting your own textures, whatever -- feel free to ask!

Yoooooooooooooo I love seeing secondlife in the wild. I left the community about three years ago, but I wonder if it's still thriving?

heyoooo!! as someone whose played on and off since 2011, it definitely feels small (especially in comparison to years ago) but thriving!

since starting a little booth of goodies i've had frequent visitors on my isle who leave nice little messages either in my inbox or dms. there's many smaller run events even weekly that can get packed (ex: furry wrestling) and at least from what i've seen on the xitter side - there are many new people entering the comm too.

ya! i use tonkati's yoshikiri-kun head for both of the mods (along with personal face deformers)
