Dirk poked his head inside the general store, her eyes taking in the amassed food and supplies. He was in Sharance on official business, again, but this time the mail had brought him looking for a girl by a different name.
"Hmm?" Dirk smiled, walking forward and leaning down his face was closer. "You're Karina? I have a letter for you!"
He stands up straight, then starts rummaging through his bag, looking for the letter. As he looks he asks, "So Karina, is it always this dead around here?"
The man crossed his arms over his chest, dramatically turning his nose up to him with a loud ‘hmph’. “Well gee what a shame you don’t know what ugly really looks like— all your poor broken mirrors.”
Phillip then simply scoffed, dropping his act as he winced in that of a way with a smile as his arm received the light abuse. “Well letter boy what made you pick my route back up then huh?”
With a wide smirk on his lips, he then simply batted his hand in a dismissive manner as a hand fell to his hip. “Couldn’t resist being away from me from so long could you? It’s okay, you don’t have to say it, I missed you too buddy ♪.”
Dirk rolled his eyes, acknowledging he could never seem to think of snarky responses quite as fast as Phillip did. He chuckled, leaning against the doorway.
"Huh? Oh. None of the other mail persons could stand it--you scared them too much." He said, one shoulder lifting a valiant shrug as his took up a macho tone, "I guess I'm the only person capable of looking at you ♪"
"Guh--don't going putting words into my mouth." he smiled, his eyes flicking around the farm. "So tell me, what has been happening in good ol' Konohana? Any juicy gossip?"
Raven glanced away from the man as he started to look around the shop, shrugging lightly despite the fact that he was no longer facing her. ”His name’s Phillip… and he’s my boyfriend, actually, but you know - ….”
"… ?" The woman’s eyes widened as she saw the man suddenly pick up one of their larger swords, and she reached forward to take it from his hands. "O-Of course I know how to use it, and… and since you don’t, you most definitely should not be holding it."
Dirk jerked in surprise, the sword slipping from his fingers and falling to the floor with a thud. He stared at Raven, his jaw hanging open in shock even as his heart seemed to stop, then pick up in double time.
"Phillip? Like the farmer in Konohana? Like my best friend?" he asked, his voice rising a little in pitch toward the end.
Surely not. Phillip would have told him if he was dating someone. Goddess knows Dirk had come to him when he was trying to figure out his confusing feelings for both Lily and Lillian.
Phillip would have wanted to share the news, right? They were best friends, right? Years of insecurity came crashing through Dirk in a tidal wave he wasn't prepared to stop. Suddenly he was standing in that cave, all those years ago, where the girl Dirk thought he would marry told him that he was imagining the feelings he thought he knew so well. Dirk shook his head, chestnut hair swinging wildly. Had he imagined their friendship? Goddess, he had been making a fool of himself this whole time, hadn't he?
Dirk realized he had to calm down, his breathing had grown heavy, like it usually did before he used to endure a panic attack. He closed his eyes, took and deep breath, and in the span of a few seconds, he calmed. He stomped down and smothered the hurricane of feelings tearing through him, sticking them all back into the ocean they had erupted from. When he was alone, he would examine them again, but now wasn't the time. Now, he would focus only on the joy he could feel bubbling in his chest. Even if he and Phillip weren't as good of friends as he had originally thought, he was still incredibly happy for him.
"huh----Congratulations. I never would have thought Phil would be able to snag a girl even half as pretty as you," he said, his smile a bit wobbly. Bending, he scooped up the sword and gently handed it to Raven. "Er, sorry about dropping that....I guess your news just kind of caught me off guard."
Dirk walked forward, propping his elbows against the wooden desk Raven had previously been sitting behind. "You know, I was just thinking that I would love a tour of Sharance, and what better person to ask then you ♥ Since I know you've got to have some good sense, since you picked Phillip."
Dirk poked his head inside the general store, her eyes taking in the amassed food and supplies. He was in Sharance on official business, again, but this time the mail had brought him looking for a girl by a different name.
"Um--Hello? Is there a Karina around?" he called out, stepping inside. "I have mail ♪"
The woman was about to ask how Dirk knew her name, though remembered the letter only seconds later. Shaking his hand, she nodded quickly. ”Yeah… nice to meet you too, Dirk…” She then took the letter, looking it over and raising an eyebrow curiously upon seeing the name.
"No, my…" She shook her head, pausing as she thought of an answer to give. What was she supposed to say to a stranger? "… A friend of mine lives in Konohana."
"Oh, reeeeeally? And who's your friend? I happen to live there myself, so I pretty much know everyone ♥" he said, looking around the shop as if it might give him a clue as to who her friend is.
He soon gets distracted by the large array of weapons leaning against one wall and walks toward them. He picks up a long sword, careful to point it downward, "Do you know how to use this thing?"
"… ?" Raven watched as the man read the letter, before nodding her head slowly at his words. "Yeah… that’s me," she responded, holding out her hand to take the envelope. Who would send her a letter?
At the name of the town, Raven rose an eyebrow. ”Konohana? That’s… far. Why on earth would you be picking up a route all the way over here?” She glanced away from the stranger, unsure of what else to say to him. ”I’m… not surprised you don’t know anyone in Sharance. First time here, I’m assuming? I’ve… been to those towns you mentioned quite a few times…”
"Great to meet you, Raven. My name is Dirk." He slipped his hand into hers, taking advantage of her preoccupation. Shifting his weight from one foot to the other, he moved the letter from hand to hand.
Ivan sighed, feeling almost like a boasting parent as he was certain Harry was the cutest.
"I’m afraid I’ll have to disagree. Harry is by far the cutest pet in our family, I must say." He rummaged through a drawer in the living room to pull out a cozy cat-sized sweater with leaves on it. "See? He even has his own little sweaters to wear to keep warm when we’re out and about."
Ivan’s expression fell upon hearing things had been difficult. He rushed over to his brother, careful not to scare Harry who was preoccupied with Dirk’s legs, and gave his brother a gentle hug.
"My goodness, Dirk! You can tell me anything, you know that? I just want you to be safe… Are you alright?" He asked, before nodding. "The school year started about last month for my students, they’re quite happy to know there won’t be any lessons on the day of Halloween this year."
Dirk couldn't help himself; a snort of laughter exploded from his mouth before he could contain it. A snort turned into a full blown laugh and he just sort of lost control for a moment.
"Y-You're kidding." he stammered, rubbing his face with one hand, "that sweater is the exact reason Finn is cuter. Gosh, I didn't know you had to put up with such--" he paused, picking up the cat and holding him close as he thought of a word that wouldn't hurt his brothers feelings, "interesting sweaters. Finn doesn't need anything to make him cuter. He just is!"
Dirk jerked in surprise when he realized he was suddenly enveloped in Ivan's arms. For a moment, he hugged his brother back, not wanting to admit how much he'd missed Ivan.
"Alright--I'm fine, really." he gently pushed Ivan back, his eyes widening at his words.
"I totally forgot it was Halloween! What are you going as?"
Raven lifted her head up from the shelf she had been organizing, popping up from behind the desk as she heard the door open and a voice call out for her.
"Hi sorry I’m he- ? A letter?" She tilted her head, looking at the man curiously. He was not the person that she usually received mail from. "For who… ? Gaius or Raven?"
Dirk smiled at the red-haired girl who materialized from behind the large desk. He walked forward, the letter held loosely in one hand.
"Ummm..." He looked down, reading the name aloud, "Raven? Is that you? Sorry, I just picked up the route for today, I usually deliver mail between Konohana and Bluebell, so I can't say I'm familiar with anyone over here."
Ivan had heard the pants related comment shortly after he had closed the bedroom door to start getting changed, his face flushed a bright red in response.
"T-That is for times when we are not bathing or showering, Dirk!" Ivan said loudly enough to be audible through the door as he rushed to put some clothes on.
Once he had a comfortable purple argyle sweater and nice set of pants covering him and his underclothes, Ivan was ready to be visible and once again entered the living room.
"I’m so happy you’re here, Dirk." He smiled, observing Harry nuzzling Dirk’s chest. "And looks like Harry is too!"
"How have things been? I’ve been quite worried after not seeing you for quite a while. Is everything alright?"
Dirk shook his head in amusement, leaning down to place Henry on the ground. The cat ran its way around his legs, purring loud enough to wake the dead.
"You're cat's cute, but no where near as cute as Finn." Dirk smiled, leaning down to pat Henry on the head, as if to console him for being second best.
"I've been...better. Things have been difficult lately, but I think I've sorted through some things and I'm glad to be back. How have things been for you? Didn't the school year start...or end....or something?"
The man seemed to have caught sight of the other much before he had— in fact the brunet still hadn’t seemed to take notice of him down in the pasture. He wasn’t mad per say, or even frustrated— call it a type of curiousness as he kept his voice hushed, rather then calling out to his best friend in a light and excited manner as he usually would.
Cyan eyes blinked, head tilted slightly to the side; he had to admit the guy looked sort of tired, maybe sad even. Rather quietly, the the farmer came up close behind him— before he playfully punched the other in the arm with a good more then have his strength.
“Well you’re a little late on getting me my mail don’t you think? Shit— this whole time I thought I actually missed you, when I just missed getting my mail so much ♪.”
He jumps back in response, one hand raised to rub at his arm. For a moment it seemed he didn't know what to do. He was emotionally adrift, and Phillip held the only lifeline with which to save him.
Then he smiled and Dirk knew he hadn't ruined one of the only friendships he had.
"Tch--I dropped your route cause I couldn't stand looking at your ugly mug any longer ♪" he said, a faint smile curving his lips as he punched Phillip back--a lot lighter.
Ivan gently wiped the steam-coated mirror to examine his freshly washed and blow-dried hair, the blow dryer being the reason he had not heard the front door open. He wrapped a towel around his waist and stepped out to, much to his surprise, find Dirk in the living room.
"Oh dear goodness! Dirk, I had no idea you’d be visiting." He smiled before finally remembering he was clad only in a towel. "A-Ah, let me get changed, though. Be nice to Harry, though."
He looks up in surprise, a laugh slipping out before he could stop it. It begins as a slow chuckle, but develops into a full blown laugh that has him almost toppling from the couch, Henry clutched to his chest.
"I thought we're supposed to wear pants at all times!" he called after Ivan, using the back of one hand to wipe at his eyes.
"Hello? Anyone here?" Dirk poked his head through the doorway, gazing around the smithy in interest. He had picked up another mail route and was fascinated by the town named Sharance. It had a magical quality about it that probably was due to the various creatures roaming the land. "I'm here to deliver a letter...? Heeeeello?"
Dirk opens the front door of his childhood home slowly, ignoring the cat that instantly began winding it's way around his feet. His eyes scanned briefly around, and when he saw no one he sighed. Either he had missed Ivan, or his brother had plans. Depositing his bag onto the floor, Dirk bent down and scooped up--Henry? Was that the cat's name?
