1. Useful Expression

There are fixed expressions that commonly used when introducing yourself in Japanese language. It will normally start with greeting and end with greeting.

はじめまして。 Hajimemashite.

How do you do?/ Nice to meet you.

わたしは　「　」です。 Watashi wa (namae) desu.

I am (your name).

よろしく　おねがい　します。 Yoroshiku onegai shimasu.

It's a pleasure meeting you.

What to say besides your name when introduce yourself?

You can include where you are from such as your country and states. If you are a student, you can add your faculty of study and what year you are now. It can be replaces with department and unit if you are a worker.

Below are few models of common self-introduction:

1. Include your country

アリヤ：はじめまして。アリヤです。マレーシアから　きました。

どうぞよろしく　おねがい　します。

Alia : Hajimemashite. Alia desu. Mareeshia kara kimashita.

Douzo yoroshiku onegai shimasu.

キム：はじめまして。キムです。かんこくじんです。

どうぞ　よろしく。

Kimu : Hajimemashite. Kimu desu. Kankokujin desu.

Doozo yoroshiku.

2. Include your states

ハナ：はじめまして。ハナです。ペラから　きました。

よろしく　おねがい　します。

Hana : Hajimemashite. Hana desu. Pera kara kimashita.

Yoroshiku onegai shimasu.

アナス：はじめまして。アナスです。クアラルンプールからです。

よろしく。

Anas : Hajimemashite. Anas desu. Kuara Rumpuuru kara desu.

Yoroshiku.

3. Faculty and year of study

ハリズ：はじめまして。ハリズです。りがくぶの　3ねんせいです。

よろしく　おねがい　します。

Harizu : Hajimemashite. Harizu desu. Rigakubu no 3 nen sei desu.

Yoroshiku onegai shimasu.

イザ：はじめまして。イザです。けいざいがくぶの　1ねんせいです。

どうぞよろしく。

Iza : Hajimemashite. Iza desu. Keizaigakubu no 1 nen sei desu.

Douzo yoroshiku.

The ending phrases, the lower it goes the less formal it is. [yoroshiku] is very casual and be careful not to use it to older person / higher status than you or a person who you first met.

(Formal) どうぞよろしくおねがいします [douzo yoroshiku onegai shimasu]

(Formal) よろしく　おねがい　します [yoroshiku onegai shimasu]

(Informal) よろしく [yoroshiku]

2. How to ask without being rude?

Instead of asking in full sentence, using only half of the sentence with a question intonation will help you asking about a person without being rude. お/[O~] in the beginning is a polite form of questioning.

おなまえは（なんですか）？[Onamae wa (nandesuka)?] (What is) your name?

わたしは　*「　」。 [Watashi wa *( ).] I am *( ).

*state your name

おしごとは（なんですか）？[Oshigoto wa (nandesuka)?] (What is) your job?

わたしは　*「　」。 [Watashi wa *( ).] I am a *( ).

*state your job

おくには（どこです）？ [Okuni wa (dokodesuka)?]

Which country are you from?

*「　」から　きました。 [*( ) kara kimashita/ desu.] I am from *( ).

*state country

*「　」～じん　です。 [*( )~jin desu.] I am a *( ).

*state your citizen

Other questions you can ask during jikoshokai:

どちら　から？ [Dochira kara?] Where you come from?

*「　」から　きました。 [*( ) kara kimashita/ desu.] I am from *( ).

*name of place

*「　」～ご　できますか？ [(~go) dekimasuka?] Can you speak ( )?

*language

*「　」～ご、できます。 [*( )~go, dekimasu.] I can speak *( ).

はい、できます。 [Hai, dekimasu.] Yes, I can.

はい、すこし　できます。 [Hai, sukoshi dekimasu.] Yes, I can speak a little.

べんきょうちゅう　です。 [Benkyou-chuu desu.] I am studying it.

いいえ、できません。 [Iie, dekimasen.] No, I can’t.

3. しごと　Shigoto　(Occupation)

Here are some of the occupation names in Japanese:

きょうし kyoushi teacher/ tutor/ lecturer

がくせい gakusei student

こうむいん koumuin public servant/ government worker

しゅうふ shuufu housewife

エンジニア enjinia engineer

かいしゃいん kaishain businessman/ company employee

4. Gakubu (Faculty)

Below are the names of faculty in my university in Japanese. ^^

1. Faculty of Quranic and Sunnah Studies (FPQS)

コーランと　スンナの　けんきゅう　がくぶ

Kooran to sun'na no kenkyuu gakubu

2. Faculty of Leadership and Management (FKP)

5. Useful expression in responding

Before we want to ask or get to know someone, we can use あのう、・・・ [Anou,…] similar meaning with “Umm…” as an opening to our question.

Eg:

やまだ：はじめまして。あのう、おなまえは？

Yamada : Hajimemashite. Anou, onamae wa?

ワン：ワンです。

Wan : Wan desu.

やまだ：どうぞ　よろしく。

Yamada : Douzo yoroshiku.

ワン：どうぞう　よろしく。

Wan : Douzo yoroshiku.

You probably used to listen to these phrases in Japanese conversation. ~ですね[~desu ne]which means “~right?” or そうですか [Sou desuka] which means “I see/I understand”. Both are very useful as an ‘aizuchi’ or response to your partner in conversation.

Eg 1 :

せんせい：おなまえ　は？

Sensei : Onamae wa?

カウラ：カウラです。

Khaura : Khaura desu.

せんせい：カウラさん　ですね。

Sensei : Khaura-san desu ne.

Eg 2 :

アシュラフ：はじめまして。ほうがくぶの　アシュラフです。

Asyurafu : Hajimemashite. Hougakubu no Asyurafu desu.　

せんせい：はじめまして。なんねんせい　ですか。

Sensei : Hajimemashite. Nan nen sei desuka?

アシュラフ：３ねんせい　です。

Asyurafu : 3 nen sei desu.

せんせい：そうですか。

Sensei : Sou desuka.

If we are not clear with what they said, we can ask them to repeat. You can use:

えっ？すみません。もういちど・・・

[E? Sumimasen. Mou ichido…]

meaning “Eh? Excuse me. One more time…”.

As explained before, Hiragana is used for the native words and Katakana is used for foreign loanwords. Thus, Japanese names are written in Kanji or Hiragana (for starter let’s read in Hiragana) and foreign names are written in Katakana.

Instead of the spelling, foreign names in Japanese are wrote based on the sounds. Here are some of the examples:

Japanese Sentence Structure

In English basic sentence, where it is similar with Malay’s, the words order is,

Subject + Verb + Object

where the verb is placed before the object.

Eg: I eat an apple.

I (s) + eat (v) + an apple (obj)

Saya makan epal.

Saya (s)+ makan (v)+ epal (obj)

While the Japanese word order, the verb is placed at the end of the sentence.

Subject + Object + Verb

Eg: わたしわ　りんごを　たべます。

Watashi wa ringo o tabemasu.

I (s) + apple (obj) + eat (v)

Particles

Particles are words that indicate relations of words within a sentence.

They follow other words such as nouns, verbs, adjectives in a sentence.

Eg: わたしは　りんごを　たべます。

Watashi wa ringo o tabemasu.

*は (wa) and を (o) is the particle.

*Note that here, は is pronounced as “wa” not “ha” and を is “o” not “wo”.

Some of the particles are similar to prepositions in English.

Japanese Sound

There are types of sounds in Japanese which have differences in the speed of speech, language usage etc.

1. 日本の　うた

　nihon no uta　

(Japanese Song)

the words are clear and easy to understand.

2. 日本の　むかし　ばなし

　nihon no mukashi banashi

(Japanese Folktales or Old Story)

they usually use Japanese ancient language when telling the story.

the modern language is used by the narrator

3. 日本の　テレビ

　nihon no terebi

(Japanese TV Program)

to deliver information, usually they speak fast.

a beginner learner may need some times to recognize the words or sentences.

thus, be familiar and practice listening a lot to native Japanese’s speaking to understand them. ^^

In Japan, まる Maru “O” (Circle) means “Correct”, while ばつ Batsu “X” (Cross) means False.

They are slightly different from our culture where “O” (Circle) is often considered as “False” as well as “X” (Cross), and we often use “/” (Tick) to represent “True” or “Correct”.

Don’t get confused with maru, okay? ^u^

Lesson 2: Classroom Expression in Japanese

In Japan, it is common to start the class with greeting as well as when ending the class. It is to show respect to the person who is teaching. Lead by the class representative, he/ she will give command and followed by the students in the class. Also, bowing is a common manner in showing respect.

Here are some basic Japanese greeting before starting and finishing the class that I learned.

Before starting the class.

Class Rep. : きりつ。せんせい、おはようございます。* れい*

Class Rep: Kiritsu. Sensei, ohayou gozaimasu. *rei*

みなさん : せんせい、おはようございます。* れい*

Minasan : Sensei, ohayou gozaimasu. * rei*

せんせい : おはようございます。* れい*

Sensei : Ohayou gozaimasu. *bow*

Class Rep. : ちゃくせき。

Class Rep: Chakuseki.

Class rep : “Stand up. Good morning, Sir/Madam.” *bow*

All students: “Good morning, Sir/Madam.” *bow*

Sir/Madam : “Good morning.” *bow*

Class rep : “Sit down.”

The command can be replace depends on time from “ohayou gozaimasu” to “konnichiwa” or “konbanwa”.

The same goes when ending the class but the command will be

ありがとうございます。 Arigatou gozaimasu.

“Thank you.”

instead of “ohayou gozaimasu”.

The other expressions are involving teacher’s and students’ communication where the teacher will give instruction and students will respond or request the teacher to repeat or slower the lesson pace.

1. During the class

（では）はじめましょう。 Dewa hajimemashoo. (Let’s start)

（では）おわりましょう。Dewa owarimashoo. (Let’s finish here.)

ちょっとやすみまましょう。 Chotto yasumimashoo. (Let’s have a break.)

2. Teacher’s instruction

きいてください。 Kiite kudasai. (Please listen)

いってください。 Itte kudasai. (Please say)

かいてください。 Kaite kudasai. (Please write)

みてください。 Mite kudasai. (Please look)

よんでください。 Yonde kudasai. (Please read)

おぼえてください。 Oboete kudasai. (Please memorize)

もういちどいってください。 Moo ichido itte kudasai. (Please repeat)

ゆっくりいってください。 Yukkuri itte kudasai. (Please say it slowly)

はい、わかりました。 Hai, wakarimashita. (Yes, I do)

How to Say “Hello” & “Goodbye” in Japanese

When meeting someone for the first time, people will use

はじめまして Hajimemashite

which means “Nice to meet you”.

After meeting more than once, people greet each other either using timely greeting or

こんにちは Konnichiwa

means “Hello”.

As for farewell, usually people will say

(formal) さようなら Sayonara

“Goodbye”

And reply with

じゃあ、また Jaa, mata

(informal) じゃあ、またね Jaa, matane

(informal) じゃあ、ね Jaa, ne.

which mean "See you later"

How To Say “Good Morning” and Other Timely Greeting in Japanese

In addition from the previous post, I’ll list the formal and informal timely greeting in Japanese. Usually, informal speech is used between close people or someone you had become comfortable with like close friends or family members.

“Good morning”

(formal) おはようございます Ohayou gozaimasu (informal) おはよう Ohayou *both can be used until 11 am

“Good afternoon”

こんにちは Konnichiwa *note the word “は/ha” at the end is pronouce as “wa”

“Good afternoon”

こんばんは Konbanwa *similar note with the word “は/ha” is pronouce as “wa”

“ Goodnight”

(formal) おやすみなさい Oyasuminasai (informal) おやすみ Oyasumi *used before going to sleep

Lesson 1: Japanese Greeting & Expression

Greeting is one of the basic yet essential manners among Japanese. They were taught from the early age to greet people around them. It is considered as an early lesson.

Greeting in Japanese can be categorized into: 1. Timely 2. Occasionally

There is also things to consider such age, seniority, social position and the closeness of a relationship, in order to determine the formality and the usage of politeness in speech.

Bowing or small nod is a common etiquette in Japanese greeting.

The timely greeting is very much similar to Malay or English.

Eg:

おはようございます Ohayou gozaimasu (Good morning)

こんにちは Konnichiwa (Good afternoon) *also means “Hello” in general

こんばんは Konbanwa (Good afternoon)

おやすみなさい Oyasuminasai (Goodnight) *usually used before going to sleep

Meanwhile, Japan has a specific greeting in many occasions. Some are very similar to Malay culture, and some are different due to cultural differences aspect.

Eg:

Self-introduction

はじめまして Hajimemashite (Nice to meet you) *used when meeting a person for the first time

Parting/ Wishing farewell

さようなら Sayonara (Goodbye)

じゃあ, また Jaa, matta (See you then)

Leaving and coming home

いってきます ittekimasu (I’m leaving)

いってらっしゃい itterasshai (Have a safe trip)

ただいま tadaima (I’m home)

おかえりなさい okaerinasai (Welcome back)

Completing work/ leaving workplace

おさきにしつれいします osakini shitsurei shimasu (I’ll leave first/ I’m going ahead)

おつかれさまです otsukaresama deshita (Thank you for your hardwork)

Before and after eating

いただきます itadakimasu (I humbly received/ Let’s eat)

ごちそうさまでした gochisousama deshita (Thank you for the food)

Encouraging

がんばってください ganbatte kudasai (Please do your best)

Apologizing

ごめんなさい gomennasai (I’m sorry)

すみません sumimasen (I‘m sorry) *depends on situation, it can also mean “Excuse me” and “Thank you”

Before I Jump To Lesson

In our class, we are using a textbook from Japan Foundation called Marugoto: Nihon no Kotoba to Bunka A1 Katsudou (まるごと日本のことばと文化 A１かつどう) which means “Marugoto: Japanese Words and Culture A1 Activity”.

Japan Foundation is an organization who establishes a standard Japanese learning. They are also promoting an international education and cultural exchange in their program which collaborates with many countries. For more information, you can go to their website. You can also find them on Facebook, Twitter, etc.

We also will do a lot of self-learning assessment as 2 hours per class are not sufficient for a language lesson as there are a lot to study in a short time. We are using websites which are developed by Japan Foundation as well. They are foreign user-friendly, neat, practical, and suitable for all level. A lot of notes, videos, as well as information on life and culture in Japan can be found there. Some of the websites we used are:

Marugoto Nihongo website provides audios used for exercise in Marugoto textbook. There are also vocabulary lists for every topics and a can-do-check list to monitor your target achievement for the lesson in Marugoto textbook. It is really great!

2. http://a1.marugotoweb.jp/

Marugoto Plus is an additional website for basic training like kana and kanji, videos, notes as well as about Japanese life and culture. Please do not confuse this website with the other Marugoto Nihongo (I still got confused sometimes). Marugoto Plus does not require to log in and you can use as it is. There are also exercises arranged by topics and lessons in the textbook. It is really recommended to explore this website as it is truly magnificent and helpful especially for a beginner like me.

3. https://minato-jf.jp/

Minato is a Japanese e-Learning based website. Students must make an account and log in to use it. Then, sign up for any desired course to learn and follow the tasks given to complete the course within the arranged time.

4. https://hirogaru-nihongo.jp/en/

Hirogaru Nihongo is a website about Japan’s life and culture. There are so many things to look at and learn from, from activities to foods. There are videos and interviews as well. They even highlight the words/vocabularies related in every section. They are so interesting!

I’m Mai from Malaysia! Currently, I’m studying at a local university. Nice to meet you.

This is my first time doing a blog.

The purpose of this blog is for my Japanese Language class that I’m currently taking, besides sharing my passion about the country as well. Therefore, I’ll post about what that I’ve learned during my Japanese class. The class is suitable from zero experience to beginner level. I will also use Hiragana and Katakana. I’m still learning and may lack here and there so, please correct me if I’m wrong. Also, I’ll be glad to practice conversation with you. ^o^

Why I Learn Japanese?

Personally, it is because I like anime, manga, Japan song, and movie. You know like how creative and interesting yet have deep meaning. From there, I knew some of the common words in Japanese but it is difficult to understand a sentence. Mostly, I’ll refer to drama, anime and websites but it didn’t help as much as a proper class. But above all, I like the culture they have which makes them unique.

I learned about Japan when I was in elementary school. I still remember when I was a kid, I watched a Japan Drama called Otousan by accident while changing TV channel. I was mesmerized by the beautiful storyline and expressions, their politeness and lifestyle. From there, I tried to learn more about Japan. The influence also comes from my older brother with anime, manga, and games which strengthen my interest to learn Japanese. I would really like to go to Japan and meet various people one day. ^_^
