were did the Majora's mask come from

Where did the Majora’s Mask come from? Well, Anon, this question was so good and I felt bad that I didn’t have a proper answer. The game never gave a clear definition of WHERE exactly the mask came from. So, I’ve let this ask sit in my ask box for sometime now.

 Then, I found myself looking at some of Hyrule Historia concept pieces. It had this masterpiece of what Ganondorf would have looked like in Twilight Princess.

 Now, a few of you may be in awe or just wondering what he has to do with anything. Well, look closer. Particularly at his chest piece. That’s right, you are probably experiencing what I did, “Is that the f*cking Majora’s Mask!?” This opened up a huge door for possibilities for connections, or in this case, origin. 

 Looking at the official timeline, it also pointed out something that I had concluded: Link being the Hero’s Spirit in Twilight Princess.

Majora’s Mask and Twilight Princess are on the same branch of the timeline. Ultimately, there might be a bigger connection than just the Hero Spirit teaching his descendant sword techniques. But, what could it be? Well, look at Midna. 

Her shadow armor’s eye piece looks familiar, does it not? Almost as if it shares a resemblance to Majora’s mask. But, if the mask is connect to the Twili species, it had to be tied in more than just looks. That’s when I did further research.

 Eons ago, the Twili were a group of dark sorcerers of unknown ethnicity referred to as Dark Interlopers, who were condemned to the Twilight Realm by the Golden Goddesses of Hyrule as punishment for their misgoverned attempt to use magic to claim the Triforce. Their “old magic” became known as the Fused Shadow, a powerful instrument. However, during their failed attempt to conquer the Sacred Realm, their Fused Shadow was split into four pieces and scattered throughout the two realms, The Twilight realm and Hyrule. The tribe lived and evolved in the Twilight Realm for centuries in isolation, mere shadows of what they once were, as over time they grew used to their surroundings and came to accept their fate. While some learned to love the beautiful peace that can be found only in Twilight, it drove other inhabitants mad.

But, what was it that the Happy Mask Salesman say about Majora’s mask?

The mask is an ancient artifact that was used by an ancient tribe for its bewitching rituals, but the mask’s wicked power became so great that it was sealed away to prevent a great catastrophe. However, since the ancient tribe vanished, no one accurately knows the true nature of its power.

The mask had been used for bewitching trials for a dangerous and ancient tribe. However, it was left behind when the tribe suddenly vanished. The tribe vanished for one reason: The golden goddesses, Din, Nayru, and Farore, banished the Twili to the Twilight Realm for their deeds. The mask is a Fused Shadow left behind from their banishment.

In Majoras Mask, there seems to be multiple references to the Triforce but none of which show it in the elegant light that Ocarina of Time did. The best example of this would be some of the decorating in the stone tower temple (The sort of demonic statue things with the triforce on their tongues). What are your thoughts on this?

It is well known that in Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Link opens up the Temple of Time and accidentally allows Ganondorf access to the Triforce. Though, throughout nearly the entirety of Link’s childhood, the Triforce is given such high appraisal by Princess Zelda and the Great Deku Tree. Yet, it is in fact almost a sign of misfortune in Majora’s Mask. Why?

Ganondorf takes this figure of divine enlightenment and turns it against all the stories that Link had been told. He uses the Triforce and wishes for ultimate power, then ravages the land of everything and places his influence and rule under every corner of Hyrule. Though Link has been told that it had created the world and has given the world holiness and light, his first impression of it was Ganondorf stealing its power for himself.

Keatons were popular during Link’s childhood, so it only makes sense that an iconic children’s character would appear to Link during his downfall to death.

The soldier is this man being carried over to Link’s interpretation limbo. He was really the first man that Link had witnessed die, as Link had only killed beasts and creatures that hadn’t been related to man until he reached adulthood.

whats the story behind the guy who sells the bremen mask? the soldier in the canyon that you can't see without the lens of truth?

If you're going to ask two questions in the same post, please make them related. So, I'll only be answering the first.

The Bremen Mask is a mask that allows you to have baby chicks march behind you until you gather all of them and then they grow into full-grown cuccos. 

You can also use it to have Igos's servants march behind you in that boss battle. They won't attack you or follow you into the the rays of light.

This mask serves as comic relief, or the comedic side of Link. He is a child afterall, and can think certain things funny.

What are your theories on the guy who teaches you that neat dance? where did he come from? what's his story?

The guy who teaches you "that neat dance," Kamaro, is actually a wondering spirit waiting to embody his soul into a mask for Link to do Kamaro's special dance for a significant moment.

The quest is helping a lost soul fulfill a purpose from beyond the grave, which could either imply that Link wishes to help others once he passes on OR that he wants to be helpful to anyone who needs it, as if he was desperate to be a hero.

What are your theories on the guy who sells magic beans under the deku palace? do you think he has any significance? why is he there?

The bean seller isn't very significant. On Link's journey in OoT, he ran into the bean seller on the banks of Zora's River. The magic beans were a part of his arsenal in his original quest, so why not in this one?

He simply sells the magic beans which help Link get to places he normally could not go to, just like in Ocarina of Time. It's to give Link's adventure a more realistic (to which he experienced in OoT) feel.

what are your theories about Tingle?

Tingle is a confusing fellow. He sells you pieces of maps for Termina for rupees. And, how do you talk to him? You shoot down the balloon tied around his waste.

But, the first thing he tells Link is that his father wants him to act "more his age." Implying that Tingle is of an older age than the way he acts. Significance? 

Tingle wants to be a child when he's actually an adult. This could imply that Link realizes some advantages of being a child, and he will regret giving up these certain attributes if he does grow up. Also, the fact that Tingle uncovers the map for you could also indicate  that Link knows he can accomplish great things being a child.

The Descending Moon

Skullkid achieves Majora's Mask and uses its powers for chaos. One of the deeds he does is cause the moon to fall in three days. And, what happens when the moon hits Clocktower? Termina is obliterated.

In this scenario, the moon is not the exactly moon (as Termina is not Termina but that is for another post). The moon represents reality, as it is falling and Link realizes that it will either end everything or he will have to stop it. And, considering the circumstances, chances are you are more than willing to stop the moon from falling. Thus, you are helping Link face his own reality: Lost in Kokiri Forest without a fairy.

Without a fairy to guide someone, they are forever lost in Kokiri Forest until they turn into a Stalfos. Link realizes this as well, and most likely is trying to escape the truth of what is. However, when he finishes each dungeon and confronts Skullkid on the top of Clocktower, he is transported into a strange area to fight the pure power of Majora's Mask. Where could Link be? A reasonable answer would be inside of the moon, or reality.

After he defeats Majora's Mask, Termina is saved and the fourth day arrives. Everyone is joyful, happy, and in celebration except for Link. He returns the mask to the Happy Mask Salesman and returns to the Kokiri forest. Returning to Kokiri Forest is not him going back on the search for Navi, but Link finally leaving the fantasy world in his head. He has now fully accepted his fate of becoming a Stalfos.

The Happy Mask Salesman

I believe the Happy Mask Salesman is not a God of Chaos or grief or anything supernatural. He is, as simple as it sounds, Link's subconscious.

"You've met with a terrible fate, haven't you?" is the first thing he says to Link, let alone after Link turns into a deku scrub. He not only knows that Link is not naturally a deku scrub, but that Link is also upset or unwanting of this occurrence. The fact that he also sells masks, in which stated earlier is Link's way to gain recognition of others, is also something that could tie in with him being Link's subconscious.

However, if you have ever played Majora's Mask and failed to retrieve your ocarina then you'd know the shocking horror that of which is the moon crashing into the clock tower and wiping Termina off of the face of the planet. But, who is the first person Link sees after this? Our delightful salesman. He sets time back for you so you can have Link get another go at retrieving Majora's Mask. But, no physical damage is done to Link, only the now impending fear of having experienced the crisis - Which would lie in his memory banks.

Going back to the masks being recognition, this could also be why he wants Majora's Mask back so bad. It is Link's evil half or self, and retrieving it from Link could just be Link suppressing his evil wants to the back of subconscious.

For my first post, why not start off with the masks themselves?

Most of the masks of Majora's Mask grant Link certain powers and abilities as long as he wears them while very few don't do anything except help you notify certain people for plot.

But, all of the masks of one thing in common: Recognition. Since this game is a direct sequel of Ocarina of Time, that means Link is the same Link crowned Hero of Time. This also means that our protagonist has the memories of the accomplishments he had done. Now, anyone can tell you that once you become an adult in OoT, you do much more, for lack of a better word, badass tasks. Link also realizes this. Sure, the masks give him special powers, but their main key is to give him not self-confidence, but to influence others around him that he can indeed succeed in the quest he has taken up by giving him an appearance that is not of a child.
