Final Presentation for Major Studio 2
The Final Paper for Major 2
Final Project
Design and Social Impact
For the presentation, our group decided to work with the concept of social impact of design. With the process of cooking, we are able to find out how people’s behaviors can affect the society as a whole. In the first section, each of our target audiences will be the guide to choose one of the spices and put it in the pot. They can also decide the amount of the spices they choose. During the break time, we will talk about the taste and other information about those spices. In the second section, audience will know more about their choice and they have to vote for what can be put into the pot. In this project, we are going to act as designers who are actually controlling how other people affect the whole system and we are expected to see different results. Since then I picked two books that talk about the relationship between design and social impact.
The first one is a book written by Tim Brown, who is the CEO of IDEO. This book is supposed to encourage the human-centered design and suggested designers to think about how to change the society with their creative minds. To answer of the question above, Tim set the “Design and social impact guide” as a guidance for designers and he insisted that, ”Designers have always strived to create positive social change.” Besides describing the impact caused by design, he also set five design challenges to help us estimate our idea, which is a very useful way to develop a better project. As he mentioned in the book, to create a positive impact on the world, designers should “modify the way you work”, “education other”, ”develop network”, ”identify funding streams” and “modify your structure”.
The second book, “Design and social impact”, focused on discussing the challenge and the potential hazards caused by designers when they are trying to affect the society. As the author put forward, “the difficulties of implementing and sustaining social impact design projects constituted a large part of this discussion.” For example, a designer who lacks understanding of the local culture may have the potential problem of culture bias in his or her project. In this case, the author emphasized that, designers need more stringent measures to assess the effects of social impact design and thereby demonstrate its value. She insisted that, ”Social impact design, it was noted, is both an art and a science, demanding not just creative skills but also rigor in its practice.“

After I talked with her about my project and the style of background, she helped me to illustrate some different parts of background. And I turned it into the digital work and tried to make it colorful.
