DANIEL.

      ‘ I think you’re trying to get any information you can out of me before you go and ask Stella. Because you’re hoping I’ll tell you more than I told her. Don’t worry ma, I didn’t tell her anything either.”  he replied with a cheeky grin. Heaven knows Stella tried to pry as much information out of him as she possibly could with no avail.  It wasn’t that he was trying to keep Mary a secret - he was happy to be with her - he just didn’t want his family to leave a bad impression on her.        Three siblings would do that and he was sure of it.  “ She is, I really like her. But we don’t get to spend as much time together as I’d like.” 

       A brow lifted in confusion, looking at Danny. “How come?” Clara wasn’t even trying to hide her curiousness. Her kids meant everything to her and always wanted to make sure they’re alright and know that they’re loved, which was most essential to raise her children. They had all the freedoms in the world, and she let them gain experience in life with making their own decisions. Only would interfere if they make really bad decisions and guide them back in the right direction. But here she’d nothing to worry about and was quite excited about Danny having a girlfriend.

DANIEL.

                “ I know, I know. Mary still wants to be a part of Cass’ life and I’m not going to deny her that, Ma. I would never deny her that.  But I want Cass to feel safe, and with some stability as well. And her relationship with Mary is still rocky and I don’t want something to happen where Cass is taken away from both of us.” Even with her grandfather gone now there was still fear that something could happen - something bad could happen and Danny wouldn’t be able to reverse it. He wanted to cover all of the areas he could to make sure Cass stayed with him and thus was still close to Mary as well - even if their relationship still hand it’s kinks to work out.             " I know I’ll need to talk to Mary about it – but I’m not sure how that will go. And things are good, things are going alright for us. I don’t want to mess that up.”

             “Well, darling,” she leaned over to place a hand on his arm, rubbing it gently, “Unfortunately, we’re not in control of what happens when we take actions. It’s an obstacle. But sometimes we have to take risks to do the right thing. I’m sure this is going to work out somehow.” then she smiled, almost beaming to light up the situation, “And I gotta say, I’d be very excited to get another grandchild.”

Ma,  Not only are we gifting you with a lovely home spa treatment that you can enjoy in your very own bathroom, we’re taking you to get pampered. Hair, nails, massages, the works. We’ll be around to pick you up at 3 ! Be ready!

They knew how to spoil a mother, and they didn’t even give Clara enough time to process the surprise. Now she had less than an hour to get ready. They also knew how to trick their mother, as they very well knew her opinion about gifts.

Clara had told them, more than often, that they didn’t have to get her anything for Mother’s Day — not to mention that she strongly believed that a mother shouldn’t be honored only on this day but every day — because she already was blessed with greatest the gift on earth with having kids that were standing successfully on their on two feet, and two of them having kids on their own. A mother couldn’t be more proud.      Unwrapping the package, she however couldn’t help but smile at the ‘little’ gifts, and she certainly would call Danny and her grandchildren.

     Lin took her hand and gave a firm shake. “ You can call me Lin, everyone else does.” which was true. It was rare to hear her full name out loud unless it was by a teacher or she was in trouble. Right now she was in the clear. She hadn’t done anything in … the last forty-eight hours, at least!     “ The bed was a total fluke.” Lin said, but she didn’t follow it up with the ‘how was I supposed to know that firecrackers could actually do that’. In her defense, such science was not covered in any of her classes.      “ Among other things?” Lin was smiling perhaps too proudly. “Well, I’m not one to brag.”   Yes she is.

               And Clara could just see that. “Don’t worry, sweetheart. I’m not here to judge,” she chuckled softly and gave the girl a wink with a smile that gave away her charismatic. Walking around the kitchen counter, she pulled out a pan, “But I’m here to make you girls amazing blueberry pancakes. You’re staying for a sleep over, right?” That’s what Danny told her and to keep an eye on the girls, in case they would get another idea on how to blow something else up. He really hadn’t had to ask, because she was staying at his place anyway.

      “ That would be the one. “ Danny said with a smile, but it came to a halt when she mentioned Mary. That’s where it got confusing. He was growing fond of Mary, more than fond really. And Cassie was still her child but with the circumstances as they are and with the rift between the two he wasn’t sure how to handle that.  " That’s the bump in the road..” Danny admitted. Would Mary be alright with Danny outright adopting her child? Knowing that she wants to be a part of Cass’s life it’s not like he’s going to put up barricades to keep her from her daughter.       But Cass was only still warming up, slowly, to the idea of her mother being back. Cass needed a family and Danny really wanted to give her that.

             “The bump in the road? Honey, you’re trying to do what’s best for that girl, and no one can hold that against you. You totally have my support there. But if you really want to do this–and since her mother is still around and you’re clearly care for her, too–you should talk to her beforehand for certainty. It can feel horrible to a mother who couldn’t be there for her own child due to the decision she had to make for her child’s sake. It could feel like loosing everything all over again, though I’m sure you wouldn’t keep her away.” That’s all she could her son as advice and being a mother herself, though she never had to find herself in a situation like that, she could imagine what kind of affect it could have if Danny really wanted to go with idea of adopting. From what Danny had told her about Cassandra, she was less worried about the girl but more about Mary what she could think about it. It was her child after all.

   “ Hi! “ Grace was quick to give her grandmother a hug right back. She always got excited when she came to visit. She missed her  grandparents. A downside to living on the islands.          “ I’m good. Really good. I missed you!”

             “That’s great. I’m glad to hear that.” A quick kiss to her temple and Clara leaned back, cupping her granddaughter’s cheeks to take a look at her with a proud smile on her lips. “Look at you. Such a beautiful, young girl.” Visits were rare. Danny made sure to come back to home now and then for birthdays, or other occasions. But that wasn’t enough, and now living through the third act of life, she surely would try to come to visit whenever there was a chance.

    The question of the hour - how much did he like her? Enough to not subject her to the crazy that was his family.  Okay, his family wasn’t crazy. His mom was a great woman who loved her kids more than anything else. She was always the one to offer open arms when a day was going wrong and offer advice and food to make it better. His dad was also a good man, devoted to the job and to the family. It was never one or the other with him. But he had siblings. Siblings who had stories. Danny chuckled and tried to pretend he wasn’t sporting a shade of pink on his cheeks as he grabbed a cookie from the jar. “ Where are you going with that line of questioning, ma?”

                “Where do you think I’m going with it, Daniel?” she said with a satisfied smile, yet raising her brows questioningly at him, as if she was still waiting for an answer. However, the color of his face had already given him away, and even without it, Clara knew. The blessings of being a mother. “This girl must be kind of important to you to skip dinner with your family.”

    It was hard on everyone after Matt’s death. Danny lost his brother - someone he promised to protect. But this had to be something worth smiling about. “ Ah, well.” Danny’s hands hit his legs before a quick rub and his hands lifting. “ I wanted to run the idea by you of me adopting a child. Though she is more of a teenager than a child.” and while they may have their moments his mother’s input was always valued.

                It was certainly something that distracted her mind. Leaning back, she halted momentarily as Danny told her about the idea of adopting a child. Looking at him, she then leaned forward, hands clapping together with smile that now seemed more delighted. “You mean the beautiful girl you took in? If you’re sure you want to do this, I absolutely support you there, honey. But I have to ask...what about her mother?”

                   “ I miss him too, mom.”  She lost one brother in a divorce. He was taken away to a tropical island that she knew he wasn’t going to love.  Jersey was in their blood, but because of Rachel (to whom Silvia wasn’t keen on to begin with - she’d say) but while  Danny could visit, Matty wasn’t coming back.                   “ But it’s his own damn fault.”  She was stuck in the grieving stage of anger and didn’t seem to want to budge.

     “Don’t talk about him like that. He was, after all, your brother.” Clara knew her children’s way of grieving and hurt it her to see her youngest like this, but not as much as the facts of the circumstances Matthew had died. Still it was her son and she loved her kids equally, no matter what. There was no favoritism.        “He just made a mistake.”

         “ Please tell me you told Daniel I was coming, ma.            You know how excitable he gets. And by ‘excitable’            you know what I mean. “

       “No, I have not. I didn’t want to ruin the surprise.          I mean, he hasn’t seen you in a long time.”

      He knew that when he agreed that it was a girl that the questions would be coming in full force. “ Her name is Mary. “ He replied as he shifted through the kitchen. “ And she’s nice. Very sweet. Big eyes, beautiful smile, and an accent.” Was that enough or would there be more questions?

         She seemed delighted. “Mary...sounds like a lovely girl. And...,” now she had to grin and her curious gaze followed him around the kitchen as she pointed with the wooden spoon at him. She was just getting warmed up. “How much do you like her?” Of course that question had to come up.

     While it was temping to stay for dinner – he could smell the cooking noodles and the heavy smell of pressed tomatoes he had somewhere he had to be instead. More so - wanted to be. Danny grabbed his coat and walked over, kissing his mother on the cheek. “A girl from school. She’s new.”  Just like a teenage boy to keep the details to himself.

      After the kiss, her head to turned to look at him. “New, huh?” she asked, smiling, with one hand to her hip, ready to barrage him with questions as she had this look about her, that one of a mother who couldn’t hold back her nosiness when it came to her children.      “What’s her name? What is she like?”

    “ So you’re Danny’s mom!” Lin was excited to finally meet an extension of his family. “ I’m Aislin, Cassie’s friend. Your son’s worst nightmare.’

    “Yes, that I am,” she gave a soft chuckle before extending her hand with a gentle motion. Danny had told her the one or other thing about Cassandra’s best friend over the phone. Now seeing her in person, she couldn’t quite imagine that this girl was a troublemaker. “It’s nice meeting you, Aislin. My son has told me a few things about you. Blowing up the beds, among other things.”
