I hate how people in the COTC fandom will ship Malachai with anyone but Ruth. She's his canon girlfriend in the short story and was supposed to be his girlfriend in the film but was replaced with Sarah. She's still part of the film universe in the sequel as a resident of Hemingford who joins the cult (I'm not sure why she couldn't have been from Gatlin when all the other kids were supposed to be background characters we never saw in the first film).

I love her with Malachai in the short story and I feel like he'd still be drawn to her in the film universe if he was still alive because she's more violent and actually wanted to be in the cult compared to her book version which was the opposite. Violent movie Malachai and violent movie Ruth seems like a match made in Heaven to me.

I truly can't picture Malachai with anyone else.
