“Uh.. yeah?” Malachi’s entire burly frame shook with laughter. “Did you even see that guy? He was at least twice your age and didn’t have all his teeth.”

He waved a hand to the bartender to replace their pitcher with a new one, and said to Ronnie. “You only get to keep drinking if you agree with me that giving dude your number was a bad idea.”

Vala had spent more time than she cared to admit fussing over how she looked, she was going to see him- it set butterflies fluttering in her abdomen and made her head swim with a million things she wanted to say and even more she wanted to do. However, a cloud hung over them all; the death of his father had been jarring something she knew in a similar sense but could not relate to the loss of someone she knew, not like he had- it was too deep, too painful, and she wasn’t sure what to say- so she dressed in an outfit she recalled him admiring and wore her hair down and pushed away from her neck and made her way to him.

Vala was tentative before she knocked on the door, but the moment it opened she was smiling and wrapping an arm around his waist and pressing a ginger kiss to the apple of his cheek; he smelled wonderful and the pull of him tugged at the center of her abdomen and Vala felt as if she could sink, but instead stood firm on heeled shoes and chewed her bottom lip. “If we’re having red meat red wine all the way, if we’re having white, white wine-” Vala smiled wrinkling her nose up at him as she shrugged out of her coat, “What are we having- are you letting me help tonight or are you playing host for me?”

Kai squeezed extra tight as Vala wrapped her thin arms around his torso. She was so small his head fit a top hers as they hugged. He kissed the crown of her dark tendrils only to receive a kiss on the cheek from her right after. Laughter erupted from his burly chest, and in a voice that didn’t sound sincere but was he said, “Yeah, I missed you too.” He helped Vala with her coat by putting it away in the foyer’s closet and continued. “Red wine it is ! I am making steak medallions which will be served over a bed of pasta, Gorgonzola, and balsamic dressing. You-” Malachi said with a smile, as he took both of Vala’s hands in his. “-are my guest, and as such won’t have to lift a finger.” Although Kai found many things about her to be entrancing her cooking was not one of them. Not that he minded doing the task himself. “Come on in, though. I’ll pour you a glass.”

Of course he’d been drinking since he got home, so Vala had some catching up to do. After his parent’s accident Malachi found himself drinking more and more often, but he had too many other people on his mind to worry about himself.

After he poured Vala a glass of red he returned to the stove top, tending to the medallions and pasta noodles. “So,” Conversation flowed easily between the two of them, no matter how much time had passed. Malachi felt at ease in her presence. “How ya been?” He glanced back over his shoulders to flash a smirk at the petite brunette in his kitchen. “School going well? You’re...” A beat of silence passed. He acted as though the food required too much of his attention but really he just didn’t know how to ask what he wanted to. “..happy?”

It was Saturday night. He was off work and free from being on call for the rest of the weekend. After checking on his mother he came back to their house. His parents house where he’d been staying the last few weeks. They needed someone to watch over the property, and he found it oddly comforting to grieve his father in a place full of fond memories.

Tonight he had invited an old friend over. A girl, now a woman, he had known since childhood. She was the best friend of his youngest sister, but a few years ago he had taken her as a lover, and their relationship blossomed. It was complicated, given their former distance, but Malachi was quite fond of Vala. He thought she would be a bright spot amid these last few, extremely tough, weeks.

He was starting to cook dinner when he heard a knock at the door. “You know, I’m so glad you’re here.” Kai told Vala as he opened it. 

“I can’t decide,” He continued, “between the red wine or the white?”

        “I don’t love him, not anymore. Not like that.” She looked aside to the nothing in particular before she continued. “It’s just that sometimes I miss him.. I guess I’m just scared.”

It wasn’t like Kai to so boldly insert himself in the lives of others, but he knew this girl. She was a resident at the hospital where they worked together, and he felt compelled to at least offer some reassurance. “It is okay to be afraid sometimes, as long as we don’t let it hold us back.”

“Halloween is coming up, I need some bomb ass parties to attend. I am starting to feel that I’ve gone to all the must do Halloween events that this great city has to offer. Which is saying something because you’ve got Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens, and even Staten Island.” Noah sighed. “I thought about maybe doing a weekend in Salem, but I think I’ll just be disappointed. Do you have any suggestions?”

“That is saying something.” Living in New York Kai never felt like there was a shortage of things to do. Even people watching was always interesting. It was what he was doing now, cup of coffee in hand, as he sat in the corner seat of a coffee shop. “You know,” He said to the man with whom he’d struck up conversation. “I lived in Boston for awhile, and I always loved Salem. Very rich in history, not especially spooky-- but something different, for sure.”

BIOGRAPHY.

Born and raised in the Brooklyn Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York.

The middle child of three. One older sister (33) & One younger sister (24)

Father was a Doctor

Mother was an Artist

In school he liked academics and sports equally well.

For undergrad Kai went to Dartmouth in Hanover, New Hampshire.

During his college years he took up photography, and other art related hobbies. This brought Kai and his mother close, although he has always been a Momma’s boy.

For Medical School he went to Boston University School of Medicine, and after completed his residency at Massachusetts General Hospital.

He loved the city of Boston but took an attending physician position back home in Brooklyn to be close to his family.

HEADCANONS.

Earlier in October of 2018 Malachi’s parents were in a car accident. His father passed from injuries sustained in the crash, while his mother is currently recovering in a rehab facility. He now stays in their stately home in Brooklyn Heights, taking care of the house and property.

In college Malachi spent a semester abroad in France.

During the years of his higher education Kai frequently visited his hometown of Brooklyn. Summers, every holidays, and some weekends.
