“I already have no idea what you’re talking about.” He gave her a shit eating grin, looking up at Xyla as he scratched Butters behind the ear once more. Sometimes all that he could do was make light and joke about his injury. It made things easier, gave things a little sense of normalcy for James. “But i really is. I can’t wait for warmer weather. I swear, you think I would be used to the cold after living here my entire life but nope.” He grinned, shaking his head some. “But just on a walk around the park. Needed to get out of the apartment for a while. What about you, Xy?” James asked, glad to have ran into her, and even more glad that she was someone that he had remembered. If she had been important to him once before, James knew that would be the case this time around as well. 

“You’d also think you’d be smart enough to move somewhere warmer after living here for so long,” Xyla adds, a light laugh escaping her lips only to be carried away by the blowing wind. As Butters continues down the path she holds the leash tightly, stopping the pup in his tracks. “Well my goal was to find a coffee shop or really anywhere to pick-up lunch, but this one seems to have other plans. Do you want to join us? It’s been so long, it would be nice to catch up,” she asks in a sing-song voice. “Lunch would be my treat.”

Val enjoyed closeness and affection, and he cherished his friends and cohorts and anyone he was close with in general. Xyla was someone he could confide in and he had absolutely missed her while on his book tour. He felt the sofa shift as she got onto it next to him, hopefully with her own glass, and he sighed as she told him she didn’t have any gossip. 

“Nothing? Not even a fling or a hookup goin’ on? A hot person in your life, besides me? Nothing at all?” Val asked with a grin, brushing his messy curls out of his face. “Well, we have t’figure out how to cause some then. You know that’s my favorite thing to do. That and drink wine. And smoke weed. And fuck. But all of those can make some good trouble, depending.”

Val’s questions suddenly bring Xyla’s mundane reality to life. Had she really become all work and no play? Had she become the boring, stick-in-the-mud she promised she’d never be? No, that was impossible. But was she on her way there? Absolutely. With a groan she rests her head against the cushions of her couch, her red wine nearly spilling as she shifted.

“All I’ve done over the last two weeks was rearrange this place four times, move stuff into my office and try to memoize everyone’s names. Not to mention, I’ve been dodging my mom’s attempts at a ‘girls day’ with my little sister. Give me a week and we’ll see if that changes. Maybe I’ll run into Noah,” she says jokingly, mentioning her ex-boyfriend from a decade ago. Frankly, she’s not even sure he’s still in the city, but that’s about as juicy as she can get.

“Are you really telling me you don’t have someone to participate in all three with you?”

He chuckled sheepishly, giving a shrug. “Gus is fine! Professor Gus or Professor Amado always feel so formal. Unless the faculty’s using it. Then it feels very official.” He tucked his hands into his pockets with a grin. “I’m over at University of Chicago. I teach English Lit and Intro to American Sign Language.” Gus explained. “Right. Thrilling. What do you do for work? Something more thrilling than an English Lit teacher, I hope.” He chuckled.

Xyla perks up at the mention of her hometowns University, a school she once applied and got accepted to herself. “The last time I spoke to a professor was probably when I was in college, it almost feels wrong to just call you by your first name. But anyways, Gus, that’s cool. How do you like it? I hope you never have the displeasure of having my little sister in one of your classes. She’s a nightmare,” she continues with a laugh. Xy tucks her hands into her coat pockets as they continue walking. “I marketing account manager. Which really sounds more thrilling than it is. I imagine it’s the same as your gig, a lot of talking, telling people what to do and getting frustrated when they don’t do it correctly.”

“Oh no, it’s fine.” Joshua responded, not minding the questions coming from her. It wasn’t anything too personal, so he didn’t have any problem answering them. It was whenever someone really tried to get to know him that he shut down, not wanting to talk. “My mom’s originally from Chicago and after her and my dad divorced, she moved back out here to be with her family. I’ve been missin’ her and she’s lookin’ for someone to take over the bar while she travels, so I volunteered.”

Xyla’s fingers pull her coat tights around her body, shielding herself from the wind whipping through the streets. She’s still shocked by the crisp, lingering winter air despite the chill that typically fell over New York this time of year. She perks up at the mention of a bar, her curiosity once again getting the best of her. “Anywhere close by?” She wonders, hoping to remember the name for her next night out.

The cafe that Aiyla was recommending was not the most known or frequented one but nothing would compare to it in her eyes. Hopefully, it wasn’t a bad recommendation. “You’re welcome!” She smiled. “Hmm, I have a bit of a sweet tooth so I’m not really the best person to ask that question but they do have lattes that aren’t sweet at all! So if that’s what you would like to drink, it’s the right place.”

Xyla’s nose scrunched at the thought of a sickeningly sweet coffee first thing in the morning, the taste of decadent ingredients like caramel, chocolate and whipped cream coating her tongue. She didn’t have a sweet tooth like the other woman but she appreciated her honesty. “Sounds like the kinda place where a black coffee might be the safest choice,” she says with a light chuckle as she thinks of the options available. Not that it’s a bad thing, but much like the last few weeks, it would be an adjustment.

“Any other places around here you recommend checking out? I feel like everything’s changed.”

Ed leant further against the counter of the Villanueva kitchen, sipping on his beer, trying not to think how odd it was to be drinking with Xyla, hiding out from their families. In Ed’s eyes, they were from completely different worlds. Now, however, it didn’t feel that way. “Guess you can’t hang up on someone when you’re face to face,” he joked, quietly chuckling but knowing exactly what she meant. Already his father had launched into two speeches about Edgar’s failings as a business owner, and as a son. The only way he’d managed to escape was his sister coming to his rescue. “Nah, I think she likes stirrin’ everyone up. The drama of it, watchin’ people run from her,” the image of people at graduation running from the Villanueva matriarch brought a smile to his face, which softened to something slightly shy at her teasing tone, blushing just like she said he was. “It’s good to see you too, Xy,” as Ed sipped his beer, he shook his head, “nah, shut the store down early. I kinda figured you’d never come back… If I’m honest, wanted to see if it were really true.”

“Me too. I’ve been telling my parents that the only time they’d see me back here was for Thanksgiving, Christmas and if my sister ever gets married. Do you know how many ‘I knew it’ and ‘I told you so’s I heard when I told them I was coming back?” she laughs, setting her wine glass down on the counter next to her. Mama Villanueva was beside herself when she found out she was leaving the ‘shackles of the big city and coming back home.’ And though it had been an adjustment having her sometimes overbearing mother a 15-minute drive away, Xyla was admittedly glad to be home. Though she didn’t dare say the words out loud, especially not tonight. 

“Well, I am honoured you came out to witness all this for yourself and extremely thankful that I don’t have to hide out alone,” she admits. “Where’s your shop anyway? I’ll have to come by sometime. I’ll bring the two records I have and you can tell me if they’re any good.”

“Ah, he’s out taking his human on a walk? Such a good dog.” James grinned with a light laugh. While he didn’t remember much from being friends as kids, there was just something that came so naturally when talking to Xyla. The conversation seemed to just flow effortlessly and he didn’t find himself anxious or worried about saying the wrong thing like he did quite a bit in conversation these days. He watched with an amused expression as Butters made his up to James and he leaned down, holding a hand out for the dog to sniff. “Hey Butters.” He greeted, beyond impressed that he had remembered the dogs name as well. 

After a few seconds he stood back up so he could talk to Xyla once more. “I’m doing really good today-” It was by far one of the best days he had had in quite some time. “Just out enjoying the nice weather in case it decides to dump a foot of snow on us out of nowhere.” He laughed, running a hand through his mess of curls. 

Xyla loosened her grip on the leash as her pup settled in for some scratches, sitting at James’ feet. Besides her family, the pup hadn’t gotten much attention from anyone else which was a huge change from his impressive social life in New York. “C’mon James, don’t jinx us. If I wake up in the morning and have to trek through snow for our walk, I’m blaming you and you only,” she teases, a smile curling onto her faded red lips. “But yeah, it’s beautiful out today. You can tell spring is just around the corner. Are you just on a walk around the park or are you rushing off to somewhere?”

Berry recognised Xyla more from her direct-energy than anything else, the way the woman stormed through the city, asking for the nearest coffee shop. “Oh, it’s fine. You used to live here, though, right? I guess everything changed since last time,” Berry mused, taking a sip of her coffee while they walked. Xyla had 18-odd more years in the city, but Berry was only used to the version with chain stores and hard to find coffee. “Berry. Berryhilll… I’m really sorry, I’m not even going to pretend I remember your name in case I embarrass myself. I Remember it has something to do with… music? How was your first week back, by the way?”

Xyla’s lips cracked into an amused smile at the way she associated her name to music. She couldn’t remember exactly, but she might’ve introduced herself as ‘Xyla, like xylophone’ earlier on in the week. At least she remembered some. “Xyla. But if you can forgive me for calling you Bailey, I think I can forget you forgot my name,” she quickly dismisses, waving her hand as if to shoo away the mistakes.

“It’s been a lot. My neighbours are loud and cook with far too much garlic and my mother is demanding a key to my place, but that’s what I get for moving back home, right?” She laughs, tucking her cold hands into her pocket. “How’ve you been?”

xyla: He'll be 8 around Christmas, so he's an old man

xyla: she must have a dad that take a lot of photos to be camera ready all the time 😉

xyla: we'll have to take them both on a walk some time. perhaps for more of that coffee

Joshua chuckled at her words, knowing that she was probably right. Most people didn’t go into Starbucks only to order a black coffee. “Yeah, you’re probably right ‘bout that. I will say with confidence though, that what’s in this cup, is better than what they had to offer. You can tell they care ‘bout what they’re givin’ their customers.” He said with a nod of his head. The coffee shop they had been talking about where he had stopped earlier was becoming one of his favorites in the city. 

“Allentown’s a good bit away from it. It’s about two hours north of Pittsburgh, so closer to there than Allentown. That’s usually where most folks go to get a glimpse of the city nightlife for the weekend. It’s like a big trip for people from my hometown.” It was true. Most people acted as if it were some sort of vacation going to the city, despite it only being about two hours away. 

“Right, so pretty much like from here to Peoria, only much smaller and quieter,” Xyla added in understanding, thinking of the smaller city just a few hours outside of Chicago. She could see the allure of small-town life over the hustle and bustle of big cities. One might actually be able to think without near-constant honking or yelling on the street. But given it was all Xyla knew, ti was difficult to truly grasp the contrast between the two. And if she was being completely honest, she didn’t stand a chance in a quiet town much like his own.

“So how’d you end up out here?” She pressed, her curiosity getting the best of her. Ut it was then that Xyla realized just how incessant her questions were becoming and how potentially uncomfortable the might’ve made her kind stranger. “God - you don’t have to answer that. Literally tell me to shut up.”

“Oh, that bottle will be gone in two minutes, but we’re still celebrating, regardless. So why not sip from the luxurious bottles on the upper shelves?” Val teased, already getting cozy on the sofa, toeing shoes off and tucking his legs up and under his body. “Yes to both. Spicy salmon, spicy crab, california roll, we’ll grab a dragon roll… maybe one of those special ones with the yellowtail…” He listed off easily. “Alright, let me call them, love. Get this party going.” He held out a hand expectantly for his glass of wine, taking a large sip once he had it in his hand. “We could put on some music or a movie, or y’can tell me about any drama I missed in the past couple weeks. Come sit with me, love. I missed you.”

If there was one thing Xyla loved most about Val, it was how he didn’t have time to small talk or danced around topics. He got straight-to-the-point and when after what he wanted, very much like herself. And so despite expecting some more chatter about the wine he’d brought or their preferences for sushi, they got straight to business. In a flash, Xyla found herself curled up on the couch next to him, her own wine glass in hand.

“Drama? Listen, you would be the first person I’d tell if I was involved in any drama. But my life has been painfully boring. I would literally do anything for some sort of spice in my life right now. Throw me a toxic fling, clingy ex-boyfriend or even someone who thinks I’m going after their man. ‘Cause that would mean I’d have something to talk about,” She groaned, letting her head fall back against the cushions. “I’d love to cause some trouble.”

“I’m on the same level, I think. Of exhaustion, not of renting an elevator.” Gus said with a laugh, tucking his hands into his pockets as they walked. So it sounded like she was moving or something, if she needed to utilize her elevator so often. Either that or having some kind of very specific parties that would require use of the elevator system of her apartment. “Of course, again, it’s no trouble. I’m Gus. I just got out of class for the day- well, class and a meeting after. Needed the extra coffee anyways, like I said. It’s a staple for professors, I think. As far as I’ve been able to tell from this past year anyways.” 

“Professor Gus,” Xyla repeated, committing his name to memory despite this being their first and perhaps only meeting. It was just nice to meet people again, and not address everyone she ran into as the woman from the dog park, the person at the grocery store or the guy across the hall. “I wouldn’t blame you for needing an extra caffeine boost with all those thrilling classes and meetings. I probably power through three cups on one of my own long, meeting days. Where do you teach?” She wondered.
