"Felix would have definitely kissed it better, but then he’d think I owe him something. I can’t have him thinking that." Lucas liked having Felix around, he was fun company, most of the time. He knew how much Malarie disliked him, though, and he liked using that to his advantage. So long as he didn’t maker her mad, it worked out. Besides, they were holding hands now and that was the entire point. Her quiet words his nothing to settle him, making him all the more eager for this breakfast to be over.
Eating with one hand was something he was used to. Even when there wasn’t a big family breakfast, Lucas often had to deal with Melody stealing food from his plate. He ran his thumb over the back of her hand, glad he was able to. Holding hands was possible the most innocent thing they could do and it kept him from wanting more, especially right now. If he could, he’d put his arms around Malarie and hold her close, but he couldn’t, not as this breakfast gathering.
"You never seem to like my surprises, do you?" One look at her and he knew she really didn’t. Not that he blamed her, they could be bad sometimes. "I thought today we could be normal teenagers and see what they have going on in town. Maybe check out the market. Does that sound alright to you?" Lucas took a bite of his toast. "If not, feel free to think of something better."
Malarie rolled her eyes. "Of course he would." Felix was just trouble and he was what got Lucas into trouble so she found no reason to like him. Plus, he hit on her every time he got drunk and she was no interested. Their hands felt warm now that they were laced together and it put a smile on her face. It was hard to pretend that the smile was just about the breakfast and being with their family but it was all Lucas. There was a giddy nervousness in her stomach that made it hard to concentrate on the conversations around her but she tried.
"I hate your surprises." She said, nodding her head in agreement. There had been some terrible ones in the past. Ones that ended up in injury or trouble or ruining something of Malarie's clothing, those were always the worst ones. "Remember when you got my favourite pair of shoes destroyed?" She gently reminded him, bumping her shoulder against his. His suggestion made her smile wide though. "That's a completely perfect idea. It's safe for my shoes and I can go shopping." She said, bouncing a little in her seat.
Melody distracted from Mal from her conversation and she answered all her questions carefully, even the one that involved her passing the salt across the table. Malarie was proud that she did so one handed and without having to let go of Lucas's hand. He was too much of a comfort and she didn't want to let go. It felt like a few of their cousins and friends eyes were on them but Malarie ignored them. "Are you sure you're going to be okay with me dragging you from stall to stall?" She asked, turning her attention back to Lucas.

"My ass is not the big one here, that award goes to you, sweetheart." He liked the joking between them, it had always been fun and lighthearted. It was a welcome addition to the morning. He made a face at her sarcasm, shaking his great, albeit fake, disappointment. "Maybe I should let you have dreary days like that all the time. It could be better for you, you could build some character." It would be more of a punishment for Lucas to let Malarie stay behind, mostly because the fun times happened when she was with him.
All afternoon, he thought to himself. There were a lot of things they could do in an afternoon, though it was a shame it was Sunday and she had class the next day. There was still endless possibilities for fun, regardless. He stopped any surprise from showing on his face as he felt Mal’s hand on his thigh. Acting exasperated, he threw his arms in the air. “Exhausting! I was refilling the trough and one of the guys threw a bucket at me. Hit me in the leg, I’m probably bruised!” He dropped his hand to his leg, pretending to be rubbing a sore spot when he was actually taking Mal’s hand in his.
"Alright, I am more than ready to eat. Is the food ready yet?" he asked no one in particular, though the twins followed suit and became to complain about being hungry soon after. Luckily for them, food was set on the table and eating commenced. "So," he said turning to Mal, "you ready for an exciting afternoon, because you’re not getting out of hanging with me?"
Malarie had to bit her tongue so she didn't say what she was thinking. Lucas hadn't seemed to think she had a fat ass on Friday night. Now was not the time to say that though, she would wait until they were alone and maybe make him pay for it. She rolled her eyes at his comment. "If you did, I would just find my own ways to have fun. I don't need you for that." She pointed out. It was obvious that they were teasing each other but she was also certain she could make her own fun. Lucas wasn't her only friend after all.
She laughed at Lucas's little show about his sore leg. Underneath the table, she began rubbing her hand over his thigh, hoping to distract him or at least rub the sore spot better. Once his hand found hers, she laced their fingers together and squeezed his hand gently. It was hard to tell now if the story had been real or fake but she was happy to hold his hand. "Oh you poor darling. Too bad you couldn't find someone to kiss all your booboo's better. Maybe Felix can kiss it better for you?" Malarie said, her tone mocking him. Felix was her least favourite friend of Lucas's but she had no doubt he'd kiss it better.
"Oh? But I had big plans." She leaned in closer, speaking only so she could hear him. "Big, naked plans." Once the food started being passed around, holding hands became more difficult. Malarie didn't want to let go though. Soon she was able to use utensils one handed, placing bacon, eggs, toast and some fruit onto her plate. The whole time she didn't let go of Lucas's hand. It was too comforting and warm, she loved how his hand covered hers entirely. There was no way she was going to let go. Using her fork, she picked up a piece of fruit and popped it into her mouth before turning her attention back to Lucas. "What did you have in mind for this afternoon, anyway?" She asked, knowing he always had a plan.

With Friday night playing on repeat in the back of his mind, it was obviously to everyone that Lucas was distracted all Saturday morning. The people who came by made their comments and the stable boys that were around that morning just snickered. It wasn’t until midday break that Alabaster confronted him about it, warning to send him home if he didn’t focus. Lucas was too dedicated to his work to want to go home, even on his lazy days, and he certainly did not want to explain the whole story to prying parents. Locking the thoughts away he got back to work.
The thoughts in the evening got him almost too excited for the morning gathering, and even the twins weren’t able to dampen his mood with any of their loud talk and complaining. He was thankful for Artie at these times, his brother able to distract them on a moment’s notice. His lips twitched as he heard the door, willing himself not to smile the big grin he knew he would. He dropped his head back to look at Mal as she stood behind him, a smirk on his face.
"I always do. Saved you a seat. I know, I know, aren’t I generous to offer you my company this morning. No need to thank me." Lucas put a hand on his chest, acting ever so dramatic. It was almost time to eat and he felt a lot more relax -and infinitely happier- that she was there next to him now. "How was your Saturday? Dreary as always?"
It was impossible for Malarie to hold back her smile when she saw Lucas's smirk. It had been a day and she had missed him so much it was ridiculous. "I know you do." She straightened up and ruffled his hair. He was cocky already, he didn't need any encouragement and a good messing of his hair would help him contain in. If she could have rolled her eyes any harder, they would have disappeared into the back of her head. "I wasn't going to thank you. But I was going to tell you to move your big ass out of my way."
Malarie slipped into the seat beside him, doing her best to push in the chair and ignore his smug attitude. His smile was infectious though and as she rested her elbows on the table and looked over at him, her smile grew even wider. "It was terribly dreary. It was like the sun had gone away and I thought it would never come back." She said, letting the sarcasm drip off every single one of her words. Her day had been dreary but he didn't need to know that part.
"I actually did all my homework so I would be free all afternoon." Malarie shot Lucas a look so he knew by 'free', she meant she would be spending her day with him. She slipped a hand under the table cloth and rested it in her lap. After a quick check around the table, she moved it to rest on Lucas's thigh. "So, how was work? Did you enjoy shoveling shit all day?"

Friday night had been amazing. Beyond amazing. Malarie didn't let Lucas know that though, his head was already too big and she didn't think his ego needed to get any larger. Besides, he already knew she loved him and that was enough for now. When he walked her home Saturday morning, their bodies had always been touching. She couldn't bear to be apart from him for even a second. So when he had to leave, it physically pained Mal that she couldn't kiss him goodbye. Instead, she climbed the stairs to her bedroom and watched his retreating form from her window.
Luckily, she already knew that she would be seeing him again soon. Lucas always worked Saturday's at the stables so Malarie spent that time working on her homework because she knew she would need Sunday completely free. They would see each other at Sunday breakfast and from there, they could spend the entire day together and not have to worry about getting home early for anything. It felt like Sunday couldn't come fast enough and Saturday dragged on forever.
At the break of dawn, Malarie was already out of bed, showered and deciding on an outfit. The biggest problem she was facing was the bruises and marks that covered her chest and neck. They were makes that reminded her of Friday night and when her fingers skimmed over the particularly dark one of her chest, she smiled at the memories it brought. In the end, it was easy for her to pull on a jumper and wrap a scarf around her neck even though it wasn't that cold. The look on Jack's face said he knew what she was hiding but the glare she shot him told him she would murder him for opening his mouth.
The Cain family walked over to the Finn family's home together. There was already a great deal of chatter and noise coming from the backyard when they arrived, not bothering to check the front door. When Malarie's eyes landed on Lucas sitting in a chair across from his cousins and she smiled, absently tugging at the scarf around her neck. Making her way over to Lucas, Mal rested her arms over his shoulders and kissed his cheek, an affectionate gesture they normally shared. "Hello, handsome. Did you miss me?"

LYSAAC - BEAUTY & THE BEAST AU
I had discovered why you handled me
as though I were made of glass.
I know they want to know about our bodies.
Our virginity confuses them
and they are reduced to words and silences.
What shall we allow them to believe?
We are a thousand years old, no histories
and nothing to confess. [x]
