The Eiffel Tower
There are two train stations near the Eiffel Tower – the Champ de Mars-Tour Eiffel via the RER C and the Trocadero (from which this photo has been taken from) via Metro Line 9. weekend drive
Imagine the usual six-hour drive from Catarman, Northern Samar to Tacloban City cut short to only four hours. I check again if its Dominic Toretto aka Vin Diesel on the steering wheel and it’s not. Congo
Drawn to the title, I bought Michael Crichton's novel, "Congo" on a rummage sale. My first M.C. novel, I never had any interest in any science fiction author but upon finding out that it was gonna be exploring "deep into the heart of the darkest region of the Congo", I went for the book. Something about the wilds of Africa has never failed to capture my attention. "An eight-person field expedition dies mysteriously and brutally in a matter of minutes deep in the heart of Congo. Immediately, a new expedition is sent into the Congo headed by the Houston-based Earth Resources Technology Services, Inc. supervisor, Karen Ross. A primatologist, Dr. Peter Elliot and his signing gorilla joins her. Together, they descend into a secret world where the only way out may be through the grisliest death..." I knew there was some kind of a missing element while reading this book. I guess it was the intensity of human emotions. But then again, I had been used to the likes of Nicholas Evans and Rebecca Wells where there is always a struggle between the character and his inner self . Even John Grisham novels delve more into the personal lives of the characters. Or perhaps it is only because Dr. Karen Ross is portrayed as an insensitive and frigid lady. The author had given more emphasis instead on the narration of some overwhelming scientific and historical facts, which at times I found a bit boring. Fact or fiction, I didn't know where the facts end and the fiction starts. I think it is where Michael Crichton is exceptionally at his best. Add the breathtaking action scenes, which apparently is his expertise. Since it is a book written in the 80's one can't help but be amused of the technology bragged about there. After three decades, it's now a bit outdated. If you want to fully enjoy the book, try to overlook them. On the whole, the book is insightful and entertaining, and somehow it does have a "heart". Will leave you thinking days after you read it. And Amy, the gorilla, will truly leave a space in your heart.
