Thanks to @hieloilk and all of our uplifting and inspiring calls, Aella now has two dads. (Both OCs of his, respectively.) Adam, whom you can see on the first and third picture. (I don't have any roleplay characters, but want to make one.What would be a good idea for a beginner? Definitely want to make someone Half-Life related. Also, what are some red flags? What should I avoid and what would you personally never do that I should maybe know of?)

|| Nice to see you again! You certainly came with a big bunch of thought material, so let me try and sort it by questions here:

Ideas for beginners?

I'm not sure what exactly this means, but I would always recommend: 'Do what you enjoy'. If you're referring to what character to play and/or how to do it, go by your gut feeling! There is no right or wrong, and canon divergence is okay if it serves your purpose. Your blog, your rules. If someone doesn't like it, they don't have to follow. Which takes me to my next recommendation: Don't try to be a people pleaser. If someone asks for something you don't feel like doing [ships, plots, etc.] it's always okay to say 'no'. Remember, we're here to all have fun, that's what both, rules and plotting are for.

What to avoid:

Again, I think that completely depends on your comfort zones or lack thereof. Make sure to take a look at people's rules and see how they handle their blogs, and then decide whether or not you'd work well together. My personal recommendations of what to consider would be:

Be friendly to other people and treat them like you want to be treated yourself.

Don't spam and/or post enormous amounts of ooc, politics or memes. Most RPers don't feel comfortable with that and prefer to keep their dash clean.

Avoid never ending chain posts, meaning, if you reply to someone, copy their reply into the reply field, add yours and then remove the old replies on top. This keeps the post slim and easy to read.

Personal red flags:

Judging by our previous interactions, I doubt you'd cross any of those lines, but here they are nevertheless:

IM/DM-Roleplay. Just.... No! I don't do it. I feel utterly uncomfortable with the sheer thought of non-public roleplay and I will not do it. I am okay with Forum RPs, but I will NOT RP in DMs, via Skype, Discord or anything else that can not be 100% publicly viewed at any time.

Certain Fandoms [Namely MLP, Undertale, anything Furry-related, FNAF, Steven Universe and similar 'Drama'-niches.] I don't per say hate the shows/fandoms, usually I'm indifferent to most of them, but the drama, the toxicity and forced oversexualisation just creep me out on multiple levels.

Roleplay accounts of real people. Nope. I can't even tell why... It just weirds me out and I feel really uncomfortable with it.

And of course the classics: Forcing ships on me, metagaming, powerplaying; or basically someone else trying to control my character's actions, feelings etc. I am always fine with plotting, but forcing something on me I don't want to, will be an insta-block.

I hope this was at least a little helpful! I'd love to see what you'd come up with when making a Half-Life blog. This is a super small niche fandom here on tumblr, but everyone here so far has been super friendly and welcoming, and I am 100% certain you'd be welcomed and appreciated too!

10. Are there any crossovers you’d be especially interested in writing?

Actually, I already have a handful of AUs I squished both of my characters in. (Mostly by playing both characters also on their respective twitter accounts as well as on a private forum), so prepare for another big bunch of text, because here come my favourites, aka the ones I'd love to see here on Tumblr too:

Fallout: The obvious AU for any post apocalyptic character, right? (I'm a huge Fallout fan, so I am not sorry.) Aella is a former rogue Institute Courser; now salvager and repairman. She aimlessly moves from place to place, often assisting characters with their tasks. She is accompanies by 'Gabby', her custom Mr. Gutsy robot and 'Gary 22', a former vault dweller Aella had come to adopt. Erik is a originally an Enclave Soldier yet eventually grows unhappy with their philosophy and treatment of outsiders. When a recon mission fails and his Vertibird crashes in the Capital Wasteland, he is the only survivor. Aella finds him and gets him back onto his feet, and – ironically – Erik enjoy every minute of it...

Dcotow Who. Yep, another classic of mine. In this universe we have Aella – a Timelady of the Cerulean chapter who is generally unhappy with the course of her society – team up with 'Erik', a defective, not particularly deadly, yet surprisingly smart Dalek who is equally ostracised by his society. Aboard Aella's Void Ship (She has no TARDIS, sorry for the disappointment here), they travel through countless quantum realities, enjoying the adventures and hoping to find a place they can call home one day.

Portal Aella and Erik are basically the same persons as in their base Half-Life verse, with the exception of them having stumbled into the wrong sort of facility and ending up as test subjects. They work as a co-op unit and prove themself surprisingly successful at surviving. Furthermore does Erik have exceptional fun with snarking back at GLaDOS, who both, hates and admires this quality in him and hence refers to him as a pet.

DOOM I have Aella as a generic Marine, in both, a DOOM 3 and a DOOM 2016 verse. (Unlike her other verses, this Aella is actually competent in combat!). When Hell [every single pun intended here] breaks lose on Mars, she and her drone 'Gabby' try to gather as many civilians she can in the hope of having them evacuated. (I have no Erik in this verse yet, but maybe I might change that soon ^^)

Mass Effect Once again Aella and Erik are unhappy with their surroundings and striving for a better today. With Aella being a Quarian sciengeneer unhappy with the political developments within the Flotilla and Erik being a Turian Spectre, equally unhappy with the council's overall thickness. They eventually find themself and one another at Omega, where they work as mercenaries and await good opportunities for promising recruitment.

And as a Bonus: Black Mesa I would love to see a theoretical scenario involving both characters as Black Mesa staff members previously and during the events of HL1. It has never been played before, but I picture Aella as a survey team member tasked with exploring and researching Xen, and Erik as a security officer responsible for protecting and escorting scientists. I don't really have many fix outcome wishes here, but I like the overall idea.

13. Do you have any plans for the future of your muse? Would you like to see them grow a certain way? (For Aella and Erik)

         Well, yes and no. By default, I want to keep both character's future as open as possible. I however would love to see them grow and develop new insights, opinions, skills, gather unusual experiences and make meaningful friendships (and foe-ships) that shape their future personality and actions.

          In her original story, everything about Aella was foreshadowing, and lead towards her final function as a key component of the resistance: Her fondness of technology, her love for all the creatures that make most other people shudder, her infinite curiosity and desire to communicate... All this clearly paints the picture of what her originally intended function would have been. She was supposed to coordinate synth forces in the manner of the Overwatch voice we can hear in HL2. Originally oblivious to that fact, she learns about the very special function of the uplink module in her brain when she accidentally establishes communication with a gunship and can convince it to change sides. Over the course of her story she can convince even more Combine creatures – Cremators, Striders, etc. - to fight alongside the resistance by giving them a fundamental understanding of 'choice' over submission. As for the RP though, I think an outcome like this would be way too overpowered. While she still has the theoretical ability to connect with synths, I plan on not really using it unless explicitly plotted. I like my characters being faced with challenges in RP, so I rather give her other things to aspire, such as learning to live with her past, finding an environment she can trust and relax and of course saving as many refugees as she can. Depending on the people she will meet, I want her to  assimilate new skills and mannerisms, because I think Aella is the sort of person to naturally grow into the groups she finds. She will certainly become more self confident, and maybe even more useful in combat, but what I definitely plan for her is someone to finally teach her about how sarcasm works...

          With Erik I have run through a whole bunch of different scenarios and concepts until he found his final form. In his story, he always considers it as some sort of a stain; a flaw, that he originally cooperated with the Benefactors and that he worked for Civil Protection. Despite him never having been particularly cruel or abusive at his job, he still hates himself for his past choices, and so do other resistance members. Many of them do not trust him. Some of them through his entire story. He always has a hard time properly reacting to other people's distrust, yet certainly wants to prove himself, hence accepting every single dangerous mission no one else would be crazy enough to do. His blind desire to prove himself gets him from one problem into another, and only ever towards the end of his story, he slowly realises that he has to accept himself before anyone else can do it. Eventually, he decides to use his best weapons to contribute: His wit and insider knowledge. Together with two other resistance members he creates the 'Anti Main Stream', an outland radio programme aimed at providing strategical information, useful survival tips and uplifting entertainment towards refugees and resistance members. As for the RP, I would kind of love to keep that idea as a lose goal for the future. Both of it actually: Him having to convince others that he is not the 'bad cop' as well as having Erik eventually running a helpful radio. (I'd love to have him and and maybe some of his play partners to potentially end up as radio hosts.)

That is a good question. Of course both characters have their more or less 'final outcome' in their original stories, (and yes, both end up in something I would definitely classify as some sort of relationships) but as for RPing, I like to keep all of my options open. This means I have no super solid goal I want to reach. Instead I want to gather experience, try out new ideas and see where interaction with other players take them. I do however have a sort of lose wishlist for both characters, so here's my relationship-centric ones:

Aella: Aella is usually that one parental character who takes care of everyone she comes across, and tries to be as uplifting and protective as possible. I would love to see that scenario being reversed: Aella finding herself with one or more characters taking care of her, may it be in the manner or a parent, a commander, a tutor, or potentially even a lover. With her past as a Combine test subject and 'almost-Overwatch-Soldier', she developed a distorted, negative self image: She sees herself as a monster, keeps the few remaining visible components of Combine tech on her body hidden out of fear of being stigmatised, and despite her infinite amount of compassion clearly showing that she is not a bad person at all, she still always fears to not be good enough. Because of that she tries to justify her entire existence based on how 'useful' she is to others, and I would love for someone to break that circle and give her a sense of being accepted without having to prove her value via 'efficiency'.

Erik: --- With him being a Metrocop aspiring to go full Barney and join the resistance, I would love to have him interact with either a fellow, (non-rogue) cop or a general loyalist character. I think it would be really interesting for them to just talk about their place in the world, as well as for Erik to see why someone else would still want to follow – maybe even whole-heartedly believe in - the Combine and their ideals after all they brought upon... Pretty much everyone... --- Another thing I would love to have for Erik would be forbidden liaison. Might be love, might be friends with benefits, might even be something else. Erik is a spontaneous, impulse-driven person, and I can definitely see him as the one to end up in an intimate relationship despite intimacy being banned and punished by the Combine. I would love to see where such a situation could take him, because it might force the otherwise overly goofy and casual Erik to be serious, cautious and planning in his next actions.

And here's one I'd love to see on either of them: I know it's an old and cheesy trope, but I would love to see one of them (or even both) having to team up with someone they initially find hard to tolerate and vice versa. (Extra cherry on top if both parties are enemies but have to work together in order to survive!) Rivals/enemies being forced to cooperate is not just a personal favourite of mine, but also opens up a huge amount of character interaction potential – ranging from heavy serious (social/political/historical/etc.) discussions, over action-y elements down to light-hearted bizarre and even funny elements such as constant  (maybe even intentional) misunderstandings and puns. It can help all involved characters learn and grow, but also is an interesting and entertaining idea for long-term character development plots.

Ten/ (Inspiration) : Erik and Aella are the main characters of my story 'Escape from City 9', which I originally started around 2012-ish. But me being an incredibly indecisive writer, I keep constantly changing and retconning my own writing projects. I however really like the characters, and felt like it would be an interesting idea to RP with them. My original idea for both of the characters was to explore a scenario in which former enemies (Erik is a rogue Metrocop seeking to join the resistance, and Aella was a discontinued alpha-version Overwatch soldier) join the ranks of the resistance, and the problems they are facing with it. But the story itself is also meant to highlight and fill gaps on other pieces of lore, such as the question of what became of other parts of the world (C9 is located in Scotland for example), what everyday life looks like for the inhabitants of post-7-Hour-War-Earth, what became of many of the xenian creatures that went 'missing' between HL1 and HL2, but most importantly: Whether or not Headcrab actually tastes like crab and why in actuality it tastes like chicken....

Eleven/ (Story behind URL) : Malcompliance or 'Capital Malcompliance' is one of the 'Combine-speech' terms for actions not exactly conform with their regime its and set boundaries. I wanted something relatively short and easy, but instantly recognisable for someone who has played or seen Half-Life 2.
