In your mind, death was, for the most part, real.
It was fairly common knowledge. You die. It happens to everyone, everything.
Your mother had died a couple years back and it just opened your understanding. You knew your mother had gone peacefully, falling into the swift hands of death while she was asleep.
You could come to terms with that.
You couldn't come to terms with this.
You'd never been afraid of death, it was a cycle that you believed in. A cycle you knew you had to complete, and time was always just a number to you.
But it was absolutely terrifying as the bullet was inches from your head.
Your body hit the ground, and, for once in your lifetime as an agent, your brain couldn't make sense of what was happening.
—
"I think I'm going to die."
"Dramatic much?"
All of you laughed, and you gently took the cigar from Javier's outstretched hand. You looked at his lazy form, his tinted eyes were on your lips. He looked away as you pulled it out, tugging at the him of his shirt.
You ghosted the smoke across your lips before letting it into the air. You held it out and Javi took it without thinking, taking another drag.
You wouldn't get any work done. Not with this heat, not with the way you kept eye-fucking Javier Peña from across the desk.
"I thought I would be used to the heat, Columbia just keeps surprising me." You say, opening your thighs just enough to get some cool air up there, please.
Javi is silent, but you know he's listening. You pass the cigar back and forth, and with each pass a button on his shirt seems to be unbuttoned.
"I'm used to it," Steve says, sighing away from his work, a temporary break, "doesn't mean it's not hell."
"Hell is worse."
It went silent, the tone of his voice left a void. You both pass it by, he was invested and neither of you were going to question what didn't need to be. It was becoming more natural, more conversational, the powerful imprint of his words. They weren't especially remembering.
No, you could never remember his words. The only thing that could keep you up at night was his voice.
There was a time when you thought the two mutually exclusive. These times were showing you things that showed just how naive you used to be, and goddamn you still were.
Javi was halfway down his shirt, and you found none of your work was getting done. You were very found yourself unfocused, but every time something was just, were those biceps real?
First time for everything, that's what they say. But when it kept happening after that, you decided all those people are shit.
Absolute shit.
You imagined, in the little fragments of alone time you had, what could be. Well, what exactly could be?
Javi passed you the joint and you reached for it, watching his eyes on the typewriter. You glazed his fingers and he glanced at you. The smooth of his skin, he winked at you eyes blazing. He returned to his work, and you pulled the tip to your mouth.
You sighed, leaning back and taking a deep breath of the shadows of his lips. The truth, the imperative truth that scared you more than anything, that could be was falling closer (and closer) to would be by the minute. You just couldn't bring yourself to trust yourself anymore.
The bronze of his skin glowed as you passed back and forth the cigar in the heat. It glowed like he was aware of your attention, it basked in your diminishing self-control.
The way the smirk still painted his face after you brushed fingertips, you wouldn't make the mistake of thinking he didn't know.
You had underestimated Javier Peña for the last time.
"Hola hermosa, ¿qué haces sola?"
"What?"
"Oh, an American?" He smiled, and his eyes crinkled at the corners, "I was just asking what a beautiful women like yourself is doing here all alone?"
"I'm at a corporate police office." You scoffed, as he sneaked his hands around your waist.
"All alone, darling? Let me help you, I just so happen to work here." His hands, which were bigger than they looked, rubbed circles in your hips.
You stepped out of his grasp and glowered, lifting your head up to meet his gaze.
"Yeah? Then get the fuck back handsy." You flased your badge, and turned your voice sugary in a mocking tone, "I just so happen to work here too, darling."
Despite all the noise, you could hear his deep laugh from across the hall.
He reminded you of your mother, which was an awful connection, Javier was only the same in the terms of kindness. But you've heard of his escapades, have actually heard his escapades in the night.
You would rub your clit in the dark, matching the rhythm of his groans, until you lapsed. No one would know, what was the harm? It wasn't like you were attracted to him, if anyone heard groans from the wall they would get hot too.
There was none, and it couldn't hurt to say a few things. Just little quips back at him when -fuck, you going clubbing? was an excuse to say only if your coming, hot shot.
It would be easier in the long run to not imagine it was him touching you when you heard him through the wall. You didn't.
Yeah, it was dangerous, but you wouldn't let anything happen. You were going to be smart. That turned out to be a harder feat then finding Escobar's current position.
With the winks and inside jokes, you both fell into a close friendship, of sorts. The three of you, Murphy, Peña and you, had grown close with this case.
It was dangerous.
"Hey, come on."
A big grabbed your waist, which was unprotected, and not ready to go out to catch this guy. Javi was having non of it. You could tell he was about to pick you up and throw you in the van.
You sighed, focus on paperwork falling to the back of your mind. He was already leaving as you hurried after him, grabbing your sunglasses.
It was dark outside, which was a suprise. The three of you had been cooped up in the Embassy for the whole day. The sight proved, that horrid place needed windows. Hours were minutes in that hellhole.
"The Jeep." You said, trying to stay in step with his long legs.
He nodded, and you could feel the excitement radiating off of him. You had been going after this guy for weeks, you understood his enthusiasm.
You had the keys and tossed them to him, if you drive the man would be out of the county before you got there.
Not that you appreciated his driving, which was horrific on all accounts. Speed limits? Those are just suggestions to his warped mind.
As much as your trusted him, you had your seatbelt on and hands clasped to the edges of the seats.
He laughed, and lightly slapped your thigh. The touchy, more than usual, agent kept his eyes on the road as he did. That's why. That's why the slap was a little too high and centered.
No, Javier Peña would not touch that high knowingly.
He didn't notice your red face, it was hard to see much color in the dark streets of Columbia. Why did you bring sunglasses?
You didn't know these roads, you were shot a month ago and we're out for a while on field work. You stayed inside for most of the time- get your ass back to bed, your on bedrest so fucking stay there. Of course, that month so much had happened you barely understood the words coming from Javi's mouth everyday after work.
Javi, surprisingly, was very guilty, which didn't make much sense to you. It wasn't his fault, it's not like he could've stopped the bullet.
He came over every night, and it wasn't until the second week that you realized you hadn't heard banging from the other wall for a while. He quickly took over taking care of you when the job popped up.
I'm next door, it'll be easy.
"Fuck, I swear I'll kill that guy. You shouldn't be hurt." He said as you finished changing your bandages.
This man, hearing him like this everyday was infuriating. Not that you didn't enjoy this side of him, guilty, caring. You've had enough of it.
Glaring up at him, you stood up and walked to him, and poked a finger to his chest.
"Stop the fucking apologizing. You couldn't have stopped the bullet, I'm fine. Your fine. Steve is fine. Everything is fucking fine!"
"But-"
He didn't finish, you closed the space and tugged him to you. You ignored the slight pain in your ribs as you did, he needed to understand, mild pain was worth it.
This was new, he was always the one with arms all over you. You were small, he wanted to protect you. He thought he needed too, and this bullet wound probably didn't help ease his mind. Despite his silly fears, he was the one who needed comforting.
You hugged him tighter than nessicary, smiling when he sighed and wrapped his arms around you. It wasn't long, Javi wouldn't deny your arms.
You stood like that for a while, only processing his breathing. He placed a tender kiss to your head, and you for a moment you worried for your self-control. Would it be so bad for this to happen?
"I'm okay."
He can't stay.
"Hey, are you okay?"
You looked over, he tilted his head at you for a second before turning back to the road.
You smiled, you were perfectly fine but it seemed every twitched worried him. Then again, it seemed most things these day put him on edge. You couldn't blame him.
"No, your gonna crash us with your crazy driving, Javi." You joked, gently elbowing him across the seatrest.
As if driving like a madman every time he was behind the wheel, Javi thought is was fun to drive with only one hand.
You also did, but you didn't regularly go over ninty on backroads.
"I won't crash."
You snickered, but you believed him. The way he said it was comforting, he was completely confident in his driving. For such a smart man, his incompetence was showing through every tooth in his smile.
"Sure, sure."
"I won't." He said, suddenly serious.
You rose your eyebrows, you wanted to push it, ask him why, but you were one with car crashes, knew the fear. There was no fear on Javi's face, just a tight lipped concentrated face. No, there was no fear on his face, but it stood your hair on end just the same.
You nodded, but wouldn't be surprised if he didn't see it. He was too focused now, his fierce eyes stuck on the road. He wasn't thinking about driving, but you didn't know what was really on his mind.
You didn't like seeing him like this, hurt. It was different than his usual anger, by which you loved. His anger was possibly one of the hottest things about him- not discussing him when he speaks Spanish. That was a whole other level.
None of those were happening, he looked constricted. What was he hiding?
"Is everything okay?" You questioned, placing a soft hand on his arm in the middle divider.
You wanted to take off his stupid mask. His eyes would tell you everything and, goddammit, you couldn't tell a thing. They were emotionless, and you hated how good he was at hiding. If only you could do the same.
"You think I'd let anything happen to you?" He said, not moving.
No.
It was odd, he couldn't stop some things. Some accidents were out of his hand, some things he couldn't control. He obviously thought he did, and you deducted that this man had too much guilt on his shoulders. You wondered what he was before this, who he was before he met you. It was scary, but oh-so delicious of a topic.
Who was he when he was young? Did he run around with women like he used to? He must've not been with many, he almost married someone. The Javi she knew now, would fuck someone more than once.
The screams heard every night were someone new, the octaves different. He didn't commit, and that was one of the many things you understand him.
He was scared of commitment, and you didn't think he ever would.
That's what made this ever more dangerous. The touch's you shared meant something to you, and you knew it didn't to him. But with every passing day, your imagination was overpowering reason. You were running out of reasons to not stop the damn car and kiss him.
Sometimes, you proved stronger than you ever thought possible.
The car stopped, and he jumped out before you could blink.
Sometimes Javier Peña was a very confusing man.
He was mostly just sexy, though.
The apartment took all of five minutes to bust down the door and reach the top. You still worried that he would already be gone. You fell behind as Javi ran up the stairs, his long legs -and unbelievably fast movements- made him much faster.
He flung open the door a good couple of seconds before you did. He was talking to a man loudly, and you couldn't tell if it was because he wanted you to hear or the man to the side.
"-If we're wrong, we'd get the sack immediately. We can't risk it."
He glanced at your form when you ran in, and he avoided your eyes.
Fuck, Javi, what were you going to do?
More importantly, why didn't he want you to know? You weren't going to leave, the man to the side was obviously the man you've been chasing. Fuck him if he thinks your going to miss this. He turned to fully face the man, and you took this sign to keep your gun up, pointing at the man.
"Yeah, I guess we can't." Javi spike again, his voice eerily calm in the strings winds.
He turned and shot him in the leg.
You met his eyes before he turned. His eyes were happy, which you quickly dismissed at missseeing. What would Javi be happy about, whatever he was going to do?
Was this what he didn't want you to see?
He was happy. At catching him, you assumed. Something told you that wasn't it.
He pushed him to the ground hard and jumped on him.
You couldn't make out the words, a fast Spanish that you barely knew. Only the word for "Bitch" passes through your mind. All of the words were most likely nasty, Javi wasn't exactly known for his clean mouth.
You liked it.
And that outcome, not that- were his eyes actually blazing? His fast words, yelling in this poor mans face, you couldn't help but imagine.
Once the man screamed something to his liking, Javi stood up and didn't spare you a second glance as he walked out, only grabbed your bicep when he passed you. He dragged you, and you let him.
You immediately flushed because, fuck, you had soaked through your panties. You were wearing tight, light grey pants, and you hoped that he wouldn't look down.
You didn't talk, he was thinking and it was all-to rude to interrupt Javier Pena's thoughts. He had let go of your arm, and you both walked silently down the stairs (the damned places didn't have an elevator) at a slow pace.
On any other time, he would be behind of you. He had your back, and he would cover you. And also, ass. Although, this foggy night in the quiet walk to the car, he kept a couple steps in front of you. You let his footsteps lead you, a provocative sound that flowed your heat with every step.
The circle was looping tighter and tighter wound your heart, but you guessed, by his shallower breaths, you would not be the first one to break.
He stopped, and the walk of his and yours (Us.) did too.
For a split second, you knew if were to do anything you would break. If he kissed you would not stop him, you wanted to know if his hair was as well-groomed as it looked.
He didn't turn, and you didn't dare get closer. You didn't know what you were hoping for.
He took in a deep breath, which sound suspiciously shaky, and treaded on.
How long would this last? Would you catch Escobar without breaking?
No, you wouldn't.
When people have limited days, they make the most of what they can. They play games, the last ones of their life.
That's exactly what you found yourself doing. How long exactly could you hold off? Feeling confident, run your nails over his back as you pass. You wink when you catch his eyes trailing up from your ass.
It was a matter of feel. And this confidence seemed to be changing.
This strength, if that's what you'll call it, was diminishing, and it was only a matter of time.
Time was something you were struggling to comprehend as you made it back to the Jeep faster than you thought possible. You were the only car, fast as you thought you moved, everyone else had already left. You checked your watch, and were surprised to see it was half past two in the morning. Time was becoming a concept that just didn't exist to you, and you didn't know if that was to be worried about.
He stopped in front of your door, and you didn't think anything of it. Always the gentlemen, he often opened your door for you. It was a small gesture, but it was sweet.
Being pushed against said Jeep, however, was not as sweet. He pushed fairly hard, and you knew he didn't mean to hurt you but fuck that metal hurt against your spine.
His hands were on your shoulders, and he seemed to be decideing what to say. He gripped tighter to you as he searched your eyes, they flickered with color in return. It was the light, you diminished quickly, his eyes weren't red.
That was the least of your worries, Javier fucking Peña was pushing you against the Embassy's Jeep. You let out shaky breaths, and he took this as you being scared because he lossened up and leaned back.
He sighed, and his left hand slid up you neck to cup your cheek. You hadn't expected this. This wasn't Javi.
Javi was authoritative touches. Light slaps to your thigh, pinches that spot on your hips. Even when you happened to see the nightly prostitute leaving his house, he would wave. He would do nothing else, almost as if it was not allowed to touch with you present.
You had almost told him that it didn't matter what he did to them in front of you, you could hear them perfectly well all night. Almost.
Javier Peña didn't do soft.
So it was reasonable to be surprised when he did this, his hands gently against your soft skin.
"I'm sorry."
His eyes burned into yours, only looking for your answer. Only looking for an excuse to go away.
"For what?" You whispered, leaning your head into his hand gently.
Selfishly, you tried not to move so he wouldn't love his hand. It felt good, this warmth touching you. His warmth touching you. He didn't move, and you were partially convinced he was trying to read your mind.
"I scared you, didn't I?" He questioned, and his eyes said that he knew he did.
"Of what? You yelling?" You say, a small smile that you tried to hide escaping.
He looked confused, and it only fueled your smile. You flushed slightly, you probably didn't look very pretty with a big smile in this light. He was probably creeped out, but even that thought didn't break your smile.
"I shot him, and I," he paused, considering, "I was cruel."
"You we're doing your job, Javier Peña." You paused and pushed his hand on your cheek down gently. You slid your hands to his shoulders, "You didn't what you had too."
It was obvious you weren't finished, but you flushed before speaking. He kept quiet, but that didn't stop a small smile on his lips.
"I could never be scared of you, your just a big softie." You giggled, but you turned quiet fast. "I like you like that."
It was nice, his smile, then- did I say that outloud?
His smile grew, and despite your embarrassing words, it had worked. He was back, and his happiness passed to you.
He slipped his hand to his shoulder and squeezed your hand. You were both caught in the moment, you've never seen him like this with anyone.
"Thank you."
His phone buzzed, and he picked up to Steve. His eyes burned with anger, and you smiled through the chaos of his angry yelling. He was mad you had gotten interrupted.
You both jumped in as Javi told them they were almost home and safe, and he glanced over when you giggled at his raised tone.
Gone, was your self-control. You cursed for dwelling on it.
He pinched your hip and smiled when he put the phone down, and you both enjoyed the silence of the night back home.
Home.
Yeah, you might've held hands back, but that was just comfort, right?
Oh, fuck me.
You've only felt this once before, and this emotion was all to easy to decipher.
