You can usually find books on witchcraft, yes, but there’s also field guides on local foraging and wildlife, cookbooks, books that teach you how to craft and DIY, books about environmental protection and stewardship, books on how to use herbs medicinally, books about other religions, cultures, and spiritual practices. My favorite local library even has a seed swapping program and fantastic resources to research your own family history!

ok so is now a good time to have the conversation about the rampant ableism in transfem spaces

as long as ive been in the community, the ideal trans woman has always been one who is disabled in ways that are entertaining and endearing while anything that would actually affect another person is expected to be compartmentalized and handled in private. there is no literacy about disabled history, rights, or advocacy, despite the way disability and queerness are inseparably intertwined (dysphoria treated as schizophrenia, autism as leaving one vulnerable to being “groomed” into the “transgender cult,” fucking aids). many trans women come from ironic and post-ironic spaces online, many of which are deeply bigoted (not just against disability, mind), and their slurs and mockery and fetishization get brought along by those women who continue to perform detachment and launder these ideas in spaces that lack the literacy to push back against them, so the few who do are isolated from their peers and eventually quarantined into spaces where their complaints cannot be heard.

the sad thing for me about the discourse thats currently revving up is that its nothing new, its just the logical conclusion of the culture ive experienced since day one: the ideal trans women is a public commodity who is expected to perform desirability; an actress, a musician, a comedian, a sexual object. this is seen as mandatory from tmes and aspirational from other trans women. therefore, any trans woman who cannot perform, who is limited from doing so in a way that cannot be overcome, exists on the fringes of the community, shunned from the masses by transmisogyny and from her community by ableism. the idea that these women are burdens, parasites, and, of course, sexual predators is only conceivable because the community lacks the vocabulary to push back against it. to recognize that the disabled trans woman is even less likely to be pampered by insurance companies than the abled woman. to identify this as downstream from conservative rhetoric to justify removing protections from discrimination and access to financial resources. to remember that marx himself was disabled and supported by his community and, under the “marxist” framework used here, marx himself would be considered a parasite.

you need to get anti-ableist. you need to educate yourself on ableist tropes, language, and community dynamics. you need to acquire the vocabulary to push back against ableism. you need to understand that ableism has been pushed on you since the day you were born and it will kill you if it gets the chance. today, its “puppygirls.” when your mask falls, when you stumble in the middle of your performance, when youve been isolated and commodified, you too will be rendered disposable. you will be blamed for the times people never spoke up, never addressed you, never treated you as an equal. you will have every aspect of your life picked apart and judged. you will be found guilty. you too will be consumed.
