"I’m interested in the presence of alchemy in photography during the shift from analog to digital and the ability of the image to create truths. Through a balancing act between the two production methods, I’m contemplating the future of abstraction in image making as it expands into an unmoderated high definition form. Heavily tied to material studies and experimentation, the history of photographic and cinematic alternative process is ever present in my practice. At a period in time where images, remakes and reiterations are rampant, my work deals with the actuality of an art object.
The work I create exists in a space between analog and digital image making. Most recently I’ve been exploring the remnants of chemical production in darkroom trays. Using materials that I can pour and allow to harden, I’m encasing the dormant chemicals into a physical form and scanning the results. In conjunction with this, I’ve been making chemical prints of photographic extractions from tools such as color correction cards. I’ve reintroduced these prints into darkroom trays, the birthplace of the analog photographic image, to compromise the surface integrity. After introducing these prints to the scanner once again, I’m enlarging them and printing them on canvas, stretching them as if they were a painting. These mediations abstract the original image to an unrecognizable form, highlighting the material itself. I’m interested in the historical relationship between photography, painting, and sculpture."
