Nick Cannon is speaking up about the current state of African-Americans in Hollywood.  He, along with several other Black actors, are tired of movies like “Django Unchained, Lincoln, The Butler and “12 Years a Slave(The list can go on and on).” Within about a year’s time span, these FOUR box office Slave Movies have hit the silver screen … with a fifth reportedly in the making.

I have to agree. I’m sick of the slave narrative. We have a richer history than what happened to us in the US. 

Part of the issue is that we aren’t thoroughly educated on our past. We don’t know our roots. We know we came from Africa and a lot of us could probably name some of the more famous countries but how many of us really know African history? How many of us have any idea of where we MIGHT have come from on the continent? 

We weren’t just slaves. We were kings and queens and ambassadors and businessmen and businesswomen. We were artisans and engineers.

We still ARE all of those things!

But I can still recognize that the reason we keep seeing all these slave stories is because there is a power system in place that wants to keep our minds in chains. So long as they keep broadcasting across the country and the world the stories of our bondage the way they have so far, all we’ll ever see in our history is slavery.

Lincoln was about the president mainly. The butler wasn’t a slave. Django was a Tarantino movie so that doesn’t count. And 12 years a slave is the only real slave movie that came out recently. Movies take a while to come out, and what other slave movies are there besides The Amistad?

Pretty sure he’s not just referring to “slave” movies, in that in all these movies the Black characters were all enslaved, but he’s using it as a catchall to describe the types of movies that have come out that show Black people as enslaved or oppressed and struggling for freedom. Many of these movies, with the exception of 12 Years a Slave, set up whites as the hero in some way or being educated by the “poor oppressed Black person.” Basically these movies serve to compress all of Black American history into some small box, and fails to show the complexity of Black people and Black histoty. 

I disagree with Nick that we need Black King and Queen movies (though those would be great), but what about Black American stories of those who were creators and innovators of all the music genres in this country, or educators, or more Best Man Holiday type movies that show Black people in relationships, friendships, and dealing with life and death. This is the issue to me, our stories need to be told in their totality. Cause it’s very evident that the majority of these films listed above are meant to appease white audiences. (I would say from what I’ve heard 12 Years a Slave is the exception as it is from the perspective of an actual enslaved person and does not center the white hero)

Basically, we’re not seeing Black people in the full range of available narratives: the hero, the super intelligent villain, the anti-hero with the tragic backstory, the girl that every guy in the movie wants for no apparent reason, basically all the stories that white people get to be in….

Día de muertos El primero y dos de noviembre todos los mexicanos tenemos la visita de personas que fueron muy importantes en nuestra vida: nuestros muertos. El primer día esta dedicado a los niños y el segundo a los adultos. Esta celebración tiene orígenes mesoamericanos y cada región tiene una forma distinta de honran a sus seres queridos que se han ido, pero en estas fechas no importa de que estado o región seas todas las ofrendas llevan estos elementos entre los que destacan:

Las Calaveras de dulce, tienen escritos el nombre en la frente del difunto.

El Pan de muerto. Es un panecillo dulce que se hornea en diferentes figuras, desde simples formas redondas hasta cráneos, adornado con figuras del mismo pan en forma de hueso y se espolvorea con azúcar.

Las Flores. Durante el período del 1 al 2 de noviembre las familias normalmente limpian y decoran las tumbas con coloridas coronas de flores principalmente de cempasúchitl, las cuales se cree atraen y guían las almas de los muertos.

Altar de muertos:En el caso de que no se pueda visitar la tumba, ya sea porque ya no existe la tumba del difunto, o porque la familia está muy lejos para ir a visitarla, también se elaboran detallados altares en las casas, donde se ponen las ofrendas, que pueden ser platillos de comida, el pan de muerto, vasos de agua, mezcal, tequila, pulque o atole, cigarros e incluso juguetes para las almas de los niños. Todo esto se coloca junto al retrato de los difuntos rodeados de veladoras.

Retrato de la persona recordada: El retrato del difunto sugiere el ánima que los visitará la noche del 2 de noviembre.

Flor de cempasúchil: Su color representa la luz como los rayos del sol y al regarla en forma de camino se le indica a las almas el rumbo por el cual se le guía a casa.

Cruz de tierra: Para recordarle su fe, ya que el Miércoles de Ceniza se le dice la frase: “Recuerda que polvo eres y en polvo te convertirás”, con lo que se le recuerda que regresa a la tierra de la que salió.

Papel picado: También se suelen adornar las ofrenda con papel picado que es una artesanía mexicana que se elabora con papel de china recortado con figuras de esqueletos y calaveritas.
