Poor child, pretending he could ever run from home. Poor child with a poor father and a foolish little heart.
(Or: the author kinned C00lkidd a bit too close to the sun.)
I feel like we don’t talk enough about Azure and his relationship to the cult.
He wanted love, that’s all this boy wanted, and he thought that was promised when coming into this ‘Family’. But no, you know what happened? Instead of the blue robes the rest were given, he was handed brown, patched together rags because he wasn’t born into the Family.
Now that obviously had to come with a bit of a stigma. Being an outsider, one that is trying to repent and be a child of the Spawn, yes, but an outsider nonetheless. We aren’t even sure if there were more outsiders in the cult.
But therefore, even in this place where love is promised, he’s still seen as different, and not like the rest. ‘Sure you might pray and heal all of us, but you aren’t LIKE us. We appreciate you’re trying to repent for your sins but you know… it must be hard since you come from beyond the forest.’
But hey they have two time- oh dagger through the chest okay.
Bonus, I like to think that he was promised the robes if Amarah had seen The Spawn forgive him. But overtime Azure was never given the robes, even when he became a herbalist and healer for the Family. Amarah always needed a ‘Them’ in their fear mongering, and Azure is a prime example,

Another note I don’t think you can juggle being goth and being a prude. Not to say the fetishization of “goth girls” isn’t a problem it’s making my life hell but I’m talking about something different
You have to be open to the fact goth as a subculture is a sister alongside BDSM culture with shared values and goals. Right down to the birth of brothels and mistress dynamics many years ago. BDSM and Goth are both counter cultures seeking self liberation from societal expectations.
Many aspects of goth fashion popular today are literally taken from BDSM scenes and there’s a major crossover in community which you will notice if you ever enter a community space.
You cannot be goth and be closed minded to nuanced topics of sex. Gothic literature frequently follows themes of shameful desire it’s what popularized vampires. You have to support sex workers. You have stop policing other people’s bedroom habits (IF THEY ARE LEGAL) you have to get comfortable with seeing the motifs born from BDSM scenes because we are one and the same. Through almost all of history we have been side by side attached to each others hip.
BDSM and Goth are both lifestyles, and as long as we ignore the poser elephants in the room we will always be sister communities. We have a rich history I do think you should look into.
And ignore posers. Shun them. Fake goths, unsafe kink, fetish motives, ignore that. Warn each other of problematic people and freeze them out. That’s what community is there for.
SEPARATE NOTE:
Gothic is deeply tied into religion, specifically the struggles of religious identity. Especially when born into it. Within goth spaces there’s a lot of religious imagery and it’s also a big part of goth spaces to acknowledge and focus on the darker aspects of religious scripture. Catholic most prominently but it can go for anything really.
Tales of god telling you to kill your son, the good shit.
The south is ripe for gothic influence because it is known for the abuse of religious power.
I’m goth I’m from the south and I hate that souther gothic as an aesthetic has clearly been brought to popularity by people who are not from the south or outright ignoring what about southern history is inherently drawn to gothic themes
The lands of the south are haunted by a racist past, goth in terms of mindset is finding beauty in the distressing. The beauty of the South’s horrors can only come with acknowledging the past and taking optimism to see beauty in a better future for the south and respecting the rotting remains of the south as it stands six feet in poverty with no funding to stay afloat.
Southern gothic lies in bettering our history and acknowledging the problems of those before us to correct them, including the common southern family unit if you’re looking for something more universal which is consistently very problematic for everyone involved.
And most importantly if you are centering SOUTHERN gothic, platform people of COLOR first and foremost, who have been the most affected by what makes the south so gothic, is VITAL. The abuse they face even today is the macabre part of the goth that you are putting in the south specifically. The south is in decay solely to further abuse minorities on a systemic level.
Goth is haunting, goth is community, goth is resourcefulness, goth is standing up for those in need and fighting against ignorance, goth is in our architecture as it falls apart, and in the south goth is rooted in black and native history.
