Painter of the Night features twin moments which echo each other-parallels,visual and narrative,that show NK’s and SH’s relationship at its worst & how it gradually grows and blossoms. Seungho dresses NK in the same cloak he wore months ago, symbolizing the role reversal and change. Back then he was angry that Nakyum tried to run away from him with Inhun and mad from jealousy. He mistreated him and used his body to stake his claim which ultimately led to Nakyum falling ill. Whereas now, he is worshipping NK’s body, making amends for wrongly accusing NK of leaving him and later punishing him for it, asking for forgiveness and making Nakyum’s welbeing and pleasure his priority. Both scenes look like a mirror image of each other but at the same time everything is different and that’s one of the many things which make Byeonduck such an incredible artist and storyteller -her singular ability to tell stories and convey her characters’ emotions with her art.

Gone are the times when Seungho would rather have Nakyum hate him because that was all he thought he could ever have. He stops lying to himself and hiding his heart from Nakyum. In his own way, he asks Nakyum to give him a second change at deserving his love.

All the things and gentleness Seungho only dared to reveal in the darkness when Nakyum was asleep, he shows to his lover now. It feelks like an apology and worship all at once.

In the past, Seungho’s reaction to rejection used to be violence and retribution, projecting his pain and coping with it by hiding it that way. Now, the hurt is still there, but plain to see, but makes good on his promise not to scare Nakyum anymore.

There is so much that Seungho is able to communicate to Nakyum with words compared to the past, but the things he can’t voice just yet he expresses with his touches, eyes and body.

Even more than the thought of Nakyum leaving him was the possibility of him dying, of losing him forever and living in a world without Nakyum , that pushed Seungho to take such drastic measures. It doesn’t make it better but it explains it, revealing the power of his attachment to Nakyum .

It used to be Nakyum and Seungho who denied any possibility of emotional connection between each other, fighting against what they felt, but as they slowly come to terms with it and decide to pursue this seemingly hopeless love, it’s others who invalidate their love and try to stop them.

Finally, let’s face it, if chapter 70 Seungho were the one who met Nakyum in chapter 1, Painter of the Night would have ended 30 chapters ago because there is no way Nakyum would have been able to resist him and he would be like “Inhun who?” But of course it was Nakyum who made chapter 1 Seungho into the man hes’ become.

Seungho and Nakyum are at the same place emotionally - they are two insecure messes who are asking the other person the same question but not knowing how to put it into words and get the answer: Do you love me? Do you want me? Will you abandon me?

It might be the bare minimum to most people but with Seungho it’s an immense step foward, actually deciding to believe in Nakyum’s promise not to leave him, showing sympathy to let him say goodbye to HN, though his trust still has limits.

Seungho’s every actions screams how much he cares, showing how much tenderness, love and affection he hides inside, but his insecurity and personality molded by society, station and personal experience, make him send mixed signal and hold him back.

It only takes a simple ‘thank you’ from Nakyum and it breaks through Seungho’s proud facade, making himself vulnerable. It’s as if he couldn’t believe that NK doesn’t abhor him and can still thank him when he doesn’t deserve it after everything he did to him.

When SH’s sitting in the dark, he’s waiting for his moment of truth and part of him expects NK to leave and is ready to let him go. Why else would he have the servant follow him with clothes? Why would he take down his headband if he had an intention to follow NK?

Nakyum putting the scarf on HN is deeply symbolic - he’s made his decision. He chose Seungho a long time ago and now he merely accepts what his heart decided. He doesn’t need to be saved, he doesn’t even need the scarf because he has SH to keep him warm now.
