This is not what he has asked for.  Kneeling over the toilet, Shinji covers his face.  Fat load that will do to shield him from the blossoming worries behind his brow.  Fear tosses his stomach.  A quiet, tinkling sound resounds as his pores empty sweat into the water.  “I’m an idiot.  I can’t… take this when… when he’s taken so much more.  When you’ve taken so much more.“  His forehead presses into the cold seat.  “What did I expect?  Oh… I think… I’m gunna… “  Gunna what?  “I… fucking… “  Hate them.

No, no, that’s not true.  You have to have vitality to hate.  They had mined all of that out of him years ago.  Nothing of him is left.  The final straw waits to be plucked.  He can’t hold on for much longer.  The seat is too slippery from his dampness.  His forehead slides from the rounded edge.

Pallid fingers curl into tight, blanching fists as a hot wash of shame covers Kaworu’s skin.  Will he flee like those scientists?  Will he look at us differently now?  Does he pity us?

He should’ve followed Nagisa’s lead and kept his mouth shut.

“You’re too kind, Shinji,” he mutters.  “But you have to pull yourself together.  What if Nagisa sees you like this?  It’s all over--we’re okay now.”

“A-Are you okay?”  The color has visibly drained from Shinji’s face.  Last time he saw him like this, he desperately needed to acquaint himself with a toilet after having far too many drinks.  Taking him by the hand, he practically drags him to the restroom and jerks him towards the commode.  “Geeze, what’s the matter with you?  Food poisoning?” he asks, willing to wait for a response once the nausea has passed.
