Oki doki so since it's spooky season I decided to draw Sally from the nightmare before Christmas. I can't describe to you in words how much I love Sally and the other characters from that movie. She's so fun to draw I enjoyed it. P.S I know I didn't draw her legs. I also didn't intend on making her face and arms that creepy looking, but whatever its Halloween it's supposed to be creepy 😂. I'm nervous about posting this but Hi I'm MangoChips. I've had Tumblr for years and planned on using the platform to post art. However, I got caught up on high school stuff. Not only do I help out with one of the cheer squads in my community but I'm also on my high school Esports team for Overwatch. On top of all that I've been worried about my work. Since my school day is shorter than most I'm able to drawing more often. So I decided to start posting on here.

This is not my best drawing I’m rusty since I haven’t had time to draw. Have this picture of Widowmaker that was completely unplanned but I somehow ended up drawing her. P.s I know forgot her tattoo I got lazy 😂

Does it hurt you when you see other writers getting lots of notes on their stuff and something you care about doesn't? I don't know how to deal with only getting like 2 maybe 3 notes on anything I post. I'd like some advise but I'm shy. Thank you.

Ooof, anon, I think you’ll hit every writer and content creator right were it hurts with this one! It’s something I think everyone goes through, so in short, yes, it does hurt. You put hours and hours into something, you check your grammar, you check the flow of the story, the pace, the characterisation, the dialogue, and then you hit post, and then… nothing, maybe a dribble of likes. It’s so demoralising. But don’t give up because half of that problem it Tumblr’s algorithms.

If even one in ten people who enjoyed a story reblogged it, it’d be seen by so many more people! It’s that whole ‘circle of influence’ thing. If the people who already follow you only ‘like’ your work, or even just enjoy it passively without bothering to leave anything behind grr then you’ll never attract new followers and your work will never get seen beyond the people who already follow you.

This is why reblogs matter.

Hang on in there, anon. Make your writing as top quality as you can get it, and people will come to you in time. Don’t be afraid to reblog your own stuff every now and again too, so that people who might have missed it before can see it, but be careful not to spam people with the same content over and over… It’s a delicate balance. Good luck!!

I was actually just talking about this. 

Two(?) days ago I posted a story. It got a few likes. Then it got reblogged. New people (people who weren’t already following me) saw it. It got new likes. It got a few new reblogs. I got new followers. People followed the link at the bottom to my masterlist, and I saw like, a ripple effect. Not only were people finding and liking the new story, but they were finding some of my old stuff too, and that was also getting brand new likes and reblogs, and earning me new followers.

This all rapidly accelerated when @monstersandmaw herself reblogged my story, in part because of her followers, but also because she took the time to say nice things about the story in the tags. (When you say why you’re reblogging a story, it makes people more likely to look at it. It also helps the creators know what they did right.)   

But the ripple effect has continued long after that. I’ve gotten something like 60 new followers because people are liking and reblogging my stories. That means new people who haven’t seen my content before are seeing it. 

Reblogs are huge. 

Comments make content creators feel nice, and when you folks say things in the tags, many of us see. (I know I’m not the only person who checks reblogs to see if people have said things.) But reblogs help us so, so much. 

And to go back to the original question; “does it hurt to see someone getting more attention than you”? I focus on competing with myself. My goal is for each new story to do better than the last. It’s the healthiest way to be competitive and to push myself. Because I can look back at the first few stories I posted, and see that I’m doing better, and that’s so much better than trying to compare myself to anyone else. Because down that path is just hurt feelings, which isn’t fun for anyone.
