My statement on the Tim Soret issue
I have been doing some more research on the game “The last night”, more specifically the creator of the game Tim Soret. Having promoted the game many times before I felt like addressing a few things.
In 2014 Tim Soret made some tweets which were absolutely unacceptable. (link above)
I care deeply about womens rights, and way too often I witness suffering directed at women. Weather it be towards me or others. Harassment (in the street or at work), discrimination, shaming (for being sexually active, or confident, or having a basic bodily function : periods), etc.
And every day women must fight against all of these issues.
Feminism is NOT about putting women above men. It is about being treated with respect and dignity. It is about having a say about happens to our bodies, about feeling good in our bodies and not being ashamed of them. It is a bout being treated equally and having the same opportunities as men. Being recognized and listened to instead of silenced. Feminism is about human rights and equality.
It makes my blood boil when I hear things like “because I don’t see it (in my country) it doesn’t exist”. A lot of men deny the existence of many problems women face simple because they do not experience them themselves. Or because it doesn’t affect them they simply do not care.
It is true that in the USA women must face many obstacles, America is one of the most sexist misogynistic countries I know. Denying the right to abortion is an attack against human rights. Ignoring a vast majority of rape crimes, leaving rapists untouched and unpunished is shameful and a pathetic excuse for justice by law. Discriminating people based on their gender, sexual orientation or colour of skin is an abomination.
But this does not mean that other countries do not experience similar issues. In France, and Paris, harassment is actually a big issue. One that many women have to face almost daily. In all of Europe harassment, period taboo, slut shaming, and others are still a major issues. Countries governed by sharia law will not even begin to consider women as equal and it is heart breaking. Racism and homophobia are also still present all around the world.
I am not a person of colour, nor am I part of the LGBT community, but I will always fight for equality for every human being. Men should fight for women’s equality just as much as women do because there is injustice. People should fight for people when there is injustice.
These statements by Tim Soret are shameful and ignorant. It is just proof that he lives in a bubble of denial. Maybe because he doesn’t care to listen to women when they speak, or because he purposely ignores them. He could have used his game to showcase a better world, or what injustices people face, but instead he decided to create a game which mocks modern feminism. If he is afraid of modern feminism then he is afraid of losing his position of power, equality scares him. That is pathetic.
I will keep in mind that people can change, and I do not believe in cancelling people who have admitted wrong doing and actively try to be better. Even though those tweets were posted, it does not mean that Tim still believes what he has said. Obviously that is difficult to determine
I do not think this game should be boycotted when it comes out ( if it ever does). Tim Soret is not the only person to have worked on this. A team of people are dedicating their lives to bringing this work of art to light.
I do hope that this game will not be “cyberpunk world where modern feminism won instead of egalitarianism.” That is tbd.
Sorry for the long post, I thought this was an important issue to address.
