What’s in a home final painting... I feel pretty good about the final result.. there was many small details so I chose to go with a minimal approach too it..

What’s in a home?... this is the living room of my apt.. this is the room I spend the most overall time in.. it’s pretty new only been here for almost a year now.. I feel this room is the most sacred for me to decompress and relax my mind
Daily class blog: We talk about a great artists Hairy Who. Hairy Who like all Americans of their generation, the young Chicagoans of the Hairy Who came of age during a period of national upheaval that witnessed the escalation of the war in Vietnam, assassinations of political figures, student protests, a rising counterculture, tumultuous racial and gender reactions, and the expansion of a capitalist consumer economy.
Their work vividly unbridled yet also formally refined embodied irreverence and youthful fearlessness between 1966 and 1969.
This assignment was using plexiglass and to paint from influence Jim Nutt. The assignment was gave a lot of free rom with his cartoon abstract style. @annas-painting-workshop
This post is unrelated to the class. I have done some small digital photo experiments with my boys at home.
The Hairy Who was an exhibition from 1966-1969 where six artists decided to exhibit together. The painters consisted of Jim Falconer, Art Green, Gladys Nilsson, Jim Nutt, Suellen Rocco, and Karl Wirsum. These painters did very similar work in that they were imaginative and cartoon like which is why they found it in their best success to exhibit their works together like was discussed a few classes ago the importance of displaying your work.
Here are some of the artists works:
Art Green
James Falconer
Gladys Nilsson
Tumblr question: Can you make parallels with this tumultuous time and context and our own?
I think we can relate our time to what happened in the past in some way just like they went through some hardships so did we in different forms. Some things were still being worked on for example racism which we still deal with now but not as intense. There has been progress in the lives of women I think our generation has been the generation of a lot of awareness and not settling, the status quo has been changed in all aspects. Actually on this exact day Martin Luther King was buried - April 9, 1968.
Great post Valerie :) Racial politics are definitely hot topic (Black Lives Matter movement, Obama’s election, success of many african american artists) but we have a long way to go. Thinking of the news that came out today talking about the disproportionate numbers of corona virus deaths in hispanic and african americans in comparison to white. Systemic inequality will take a long time to change, but its vital we work and fight for equality as a society

Daily class blog: In class we talk about Jim Nutt he is an talented american artist from Chicago he uses the behind Plexiglas technique or reverse painting technique. He work on ideas of shapes and forms on a drawing of a cartoon character same size as the Plexiglas. Once he was satisfied with the drawing he would tape in it on the Plexiglas than he steps back to see through the Plexiglas of his drawings than he'll start painting the line. After that he would start painting the larger areas of colors with acrylic paint.
Added more texture and detail to the wood panels. Also tried to add the light given off by my phone @annas-painting-workshop
This is Chip Hughes. His art is very decorative and uses color to capture illusion. I like how he uses different values of color to create depth and movement in his pieces. It also helps create an overlapping illusion on a flat piece due to patterning.
I chose to use the wooden floorboard of my bedroom. The value shift between the wood panels and the lifting of the lines amongst them will help add a rough texture

Daily class blog: Last night I was working on my painting for class. My first suggestion was my granite kitchen top to paint but it doesn't work out as planned. So I changed it to my rug because of the colors and patterns the rug has. It's going to be difficult because of the colors and patterns but I'll try my best.
I like the rug idea. It adds more depth of color
I’m thinkin. CHUNKY!!!
whooooo! Very interesting direction to take the project. As I said to you all, I’m happy for you interpret the exercises in your own way, as you feel inspired.
What’s interesting about this Corey is now you have a ‘relief’ painting - the surface isn’t entirely flat but has 3 dimension, as shallow as it is. Now how you introduce paint and painted texture to this relief surface is open to various options... The brush/ sponge/ airbrush will want to apply paint to the surface most raised, and could leave the crevices untouched. If the brush is wet it will seep or pool into the valleys, but if it is more dry (less water or medium) it will just touch the peaks.
It kind of reminds me of how Tauba Auerbach made her “fold” paintings. The linen was folded while unstretched, the folds holding their ‘memory’, and then she sprayed colour from large airbrush guns, from different directions. What’s super interesting is that she stretched the linen over stretcher bars so the whole thing become completely flat and taut. The resulting painting was an image of the the 3 Dimensionality of its former self.... It appears to be ‘relief’ but is in fact flat.
Interested to see how you take it! Keep looking closely at the shell, the colour, striations etc and try to emulate it in your translation with paint
I love this video. Please feel free to share anything helping you to get through this time! <3
Becky Suss is an artist who focuses on domestic interior. She uses flat imagery by use of color, and shapes to generate space and perspective. The patterns she uses also helps flatten the shapes and create a smooth flow in the image
Roddy Rich part 2.. painted face and hair. Need to lay on color and detail and paint eyes and mouth
