Great White Shark by nicolesy A great white shark approaches a cage filled with divers off the waters of Guadalupe Island in Mexico.
I feel like more people should be talking about Malia, because it seems like she’s getting worse. x
I was just going to post this… poor dear :/
Oh no!
I hope this doesn’t get any more serious, does anyone know if she’s lost any weight or is more lethargic than usual?
Oh my God. Look at the discoloration, why in Christ’s name is she still performing.
I think Kasatka was performing almost up until being put down (just a few days prior?) So that should give us a hint about why-performing, I guess. x_x
2 days before. The video was taken down but I still have it.
Wow, I didn’t think it was *that* close.
Honestly it’s really, really messed up that an animal goes from “being paraded in front of an audience” to “euthanized for terminal health concerns” in two whole days.
Tbh she didn’t look terminal but well… we’ll never know
SeaWorld responded to a message on Facebook about her. x
It’s good to know she’s still behaving normally, but that response isn’t exactly sitting well with me. (Also they forgot to link the article lmao)
I’m curious if they are implying that Malia is affected by algal diatoms because uh
Wow they’re really going for the diatom explanation?
Orca in Antarctica are stained yellow/brown because of the high concentration in the antarctic water. The filtration system for Shamu Stadium should be removing the majority of the diatoms to keep the water clear so its not an equivalent situation.
And why is only Malia effected? The other whales would show some staining too if they had an overall diatom problem?
Its unusual and there is nothing in the literature discussing such extensive diatom staining in captive cetaceans. Diatoms aren’t known to cause any health issues so if that is the case then Malia should be fine. However if she has some underlying issue making her more susceptible to diatom films that might be a problem for her.
This whole situation screams dodgy.
There’s no way that those are diatoms. That water is not cold enough for diatoms to thrive in abundance, enough to form a diatom film on an animal. It also would be effecting all the orcas, not just Malia, so I’m calling that huge bullshit.
Watch and see if they don’t put something up in a few weeks about how Malia is sick and the vets are doing their best to save her with the ‘this happens in the wild!!1!1’ sprinkles on top.
@derangedhyena-delphinidae @endcetaceanexploitation @merciresolution @teamorkid
To further disprove the diatom theory. There is clearly something very wrong with Malia’s skin.
Eugh.
I don’t have anything nice to say about this situation. I guess we’ll know more if poor Malia gets worse/drops dead or not. Because ‘diatoms.’

Smalleye hammerheads can range from bright gold to yellow-orange, and their skin can have a metallic or iridescent hue. As they age, the colors tend to fade.
