Some U.S. cities have a greater rate of hate crime. Boston had more than seven times the number of racially motivated hate crimes in 2013 compared to Charleston, where a gunman murdered nine black churchgoers last week. Los Angeles had more overall racial hate crimes, but a lower rate of crime based on population.

The smaller, lighter dots represent fewer hate crimes while the redder, larger dots indicate more hate crimes took place in that location -- especially obvious in southern California and the northeast.
The GIF shows how almost every state in the decade to 2013 reported hate crimes. The map uses different colors for different hate crimes to show the most common type in every state each year, based on FBI statistics. While New York stands out as consistently having more hate crimes motivated by religious prejudice, as shown in orange, hate crimes across the US most often are linked to race, shown in blue.
