maraudingbeth:
“I wish I could be satisfied that easily,” Alice laughed.
“Please. I still have a five year old running around.”
maraudingbeth:
“How does it do that, I wonder,” Caroline mused aloud. She perched herself on the arm of the sofa. “Not that I’m doubting you, I just— I wonder how it works at all, what goes into making it.”
“Um. Magic, I guess --” was Elle’s educated guess, handing the full champagne glass out to Caroline.
maraudingbeth:
“Mhm.” Lily grinned even wider as she pressed a quick kiss to James’ cheek. His fingers had only just slipped from her grasp when she was struck with the obvious question. “Wait, wait— Fluffy or firm?”
James had never been one to consider the density of his pillows. He went from the ones his mother chose, to the ones Hogwarts chose, back to the ones his mother chose. He picked up a near by cushion, giving it a squeeze. “Uh -- both?”
maraudingbeth:
With the scraps of her mess piled messily atop her tray, Caroline scurried back into the kitchen, barely chancing a glance back at Dawn before she let the door swing shut behind her.

maraudingbeth:
“Was the Remembrall broken, or your memory?”
“Oh, the ball,” Elle plucked an empty glass from a nearby table. “For sure.”
maraudingbeth:
“Has life gotten more peaceful, or worse?”
“More peaceful. Absolutely.”
maraudingbeth:
Lily grinned proudly. “Aren’t you glad you’re marrying me?”
“You know I am,” James reached out, then tugged her close. “I’m gonna go find some pillows.”
maraudingbeth:
“I don’t know what it is about men,” Alice shrugged. “Or maybe not all of them, but at least the ones I know. They never go out and have a good time once they’ve got themselves a job and a mortgage. I could never imagine…” she trailed off, shaking her head as she tipped her glass toward’s Andromeda’s for a toast to the pair of them.
Andromeda let out a fond laugh, taking a sip from her own glass. “I gave up trying to understand long ago.”
maraudingbeth:
Lily giggled in spite of herself. She stopped and turned suddenly, folding her hands together between them. “Look, maybe we can have some sort of compromise,” she said with a smile. “I’ll have the kitchen to decorate as serenely as I’d like, you have some kind of man cave sitting room with all the Puddlemere fan gear you can hunt down, and we’ll paint the bedroom—” Lily paused, doing an artistic sort of arithmetic in her head. She nodded pointedly with a bright grin once her equation had computed its answer. “Purple.”
“Purple.” James mulled it over for a moment, before his face broke out into a smile that matched hers. “You, Evans, are a genius.”
maraudingbeth:
Whether or not it was Caroline’s fault didn’t necessarily correlate with whether or not she’d be blamed. She kept her pursed lips tied shut so as not to alienate Eleanor and looked around for a distraction.
“Oh! A Remembrall.” Caroline dashed across the room in an excitement too pure to have been fabricated. It was lucky she had found something so convincingly enticing. “I’ve only heard about these,” she said hazily, picking up the clear orb from the desk and twirling it about in her hands. “Someone must have left it here. Too bad they haven’t got it with them to remind them that they did,” she giggled.
“Oh,” Eleanor followed, bottle still in hand. “I had one once. Swear it was broken, though. Always red.”
maraudingbeth:
Caroline stared down at the girl called Dawn’s hand, but in the end, she only cut her a gentle smile. “I appreciate the help, Dawn.” She began placing the larger shards of glass on her tray. “I’d better get this order reentered before the table notices I’ve taken too long.”
Dawn blinked, just once, before dropping her hand. Placing her own on the tray, she stood. “’Course.”
maraudingbeth:
Lily looked between James and the sample square with wide but vacant eyes, trying to discern whether or not he was serious. And then, once she realized that he was, she stared more intently at the square, trying to decide for herself which was the lesser of the two evils.
“I think I would have to see the big picture first,” she allowed, shoving the sample against James’ chest. “Let’s see if we can find a catalog.”
“Sure, but I think we’re onto a winner here.”
maraudingbeth:
“Even better. Make a delivery man out of him. We can send them on friend dates.”
“That is a great idea. Ted could use a friend date. Bless him.”
maraudingbeth:
“Oh— Do you work here?” Caroline asked tentatively as her fingers absentmindedly rounded over the rough edges of a shard of porcelain. “I hadn’t— I’m sorry, I haven’t learned your name.” Or seen you before, Caroline thought to herself. She looked down at the mess quickly, averting her eyes as if the words had come out and she’d embarrassed herself further. She piled everything onto her tray in a haphazard flurry.
“I’m new so -- it’s bound to happen eventually.” Dawn stopped the cleaning, holding out her hand. “Dawn.”
maraudingbeth:
Caroline started to laugh, until she realized what Eleanor was referring to—or rather, whom: them. “Don’t I wish it,” she chuckled. “I can’t afford the risk. My mum would kill me if I lost this job.“
“Well if I took it, it wouldn’t really be your fault, would it?”
maraudingbeth:
“Well, if that’s the case,” Alice said, edging forward on her seat with a gleam in her eye. “If you ever need assistance with a few spare bites, you should know that I’m the one to owl. Well, it’s more that it’s Frank you should owl, but—” Alice shrugged. “What kind of wife would I be if I didn’t hand it off to him?”
“He might have to fight Ted for it, but I’ll try.”
maraudingbeth:
“It’s not the falling asleep I’m worried about,” Lily said with a hint of a smile in her tone that quickly made itself known on her lips. “It’s the waking up and not wanting to get out of bed. Or wanting to get out of bed and not come back because of what an eyesore the decor looks like during the day.”
“Easy now,” James grabbed another sample as he walked past, handing it to Lily. Gryffindor red, of course. “I’ll be fine with the second best option, if you’re really not sold on the blue.”
