James ran up the stairs, nearly slipping on the carpet. He hurried along and found the bedroom door cracked open, the sound of munching echoing throughout. With one swift motion, he pushed the door fully open, revealing the redhead with treats sprawled across the bed.

⚰️ Which death or loss has hit your character the hardest and how has it affected them? / If they’ve managed to get through the war mostly unscathed at this point how has all the loss and grief surrounding them affected them?

The painful truth is that there has hardly been a death or loss yet that hasn’t struck Charity. Even though she wasn’t close with all of the missing or dead she has a great deal of empathy for the people they’ve left behind and feels the pain of those close to her almost as deeply as her own more personal losses. That said there are a few in particular who have made especially cutting impacts.Althea’s death was, understandably, the hardest for Charity to face. Charity’s whole life changed when she lost her wife. Althea was the love of her life, without her where there was once light and hope, darkness and pain stole in taking the breath out of her with its sudden force. Charity went from a devoted and blissful young wife to a widow to a rebel in an increasingly bloody war in such a short time that sometimes, even three years later, it still all feels like a blur. It has been three years though and although Charity still mourns her wife there are some fresh losses that weigh almost as heavily on her. Molly was one of her best friends ever since her Hogwarts years and she feels her absence keenly. More than that there is Arthur, who is perhaps her closest remaining friend at this point, and the children to think of and her heart breaks daily for them. Still, despite all this, she is missing Molly, not mourning her as she is firm in her belief that her friend, who was among the strongest women she has known, is out there somewhere alive. She desperately wants to do something to try to bring her back to them and this is one of the many reasons that she can get so upset about the idea of the Order giving up and hiding away. Even if that were something she thought would work or help at all in the long term, even if she let go of her convictions that they should be committed to ending the war not just surviving it, they still have people out there they need to bring home first. Last but not least of the losses that have personally shaken Charity, is James’ death. Although she was not particularly close to the charming young man with the easy grin, so it would perhaps be more accurate to say that she has been strongly affected by the manner of his death and Lily’s grief. The circumstances of Althea and James’ deaths were vastly different, but Charity can’t help but see some of herself reflected in Lily as she struggles to go on without James. After all, Charity wasn’t much older than the other witch is now when the war stole her own love from her. On top of that, there is an ache in her heart for the loss of a young man who so willingly sacrificed himself for the people he loved the most. It’s a terrible truth but they need more people like him with that strength and willingness to sacrifice for what matters most if they’re going to win this war. Buried underneath it all is a sharp thorn of self-recrimination- James was strong enough to fight and die to keep Lily and Harry safe, all Charity could do as Althea was stolen from her was watch and struggle and scream. If she had been stronger…
