After getting to the university of Tokyo (UOT) Kashiwa campus we had a riveting day of lectures and lab tours ahead of us. After the welcome ceremony we learnt about the importance of science communication when it comes to natural hazards, and how sometimes making people feel safe can come at the cost of communicating the true risk of a situation.

After this we went down to the UOT mass spectrometry lab (yay for powerful magnets). We first got to hold some things which can have their carbon 14 isotope ratio tested, such as dead fish and whale baleen. We then learnt about how mass spec can be used to measure the carbon 14 isotope ratio, and how this could be used to date specimens up to a certain age. We also learnt how this could be useful in traking fish migration patterns and to see markers for things like atomic bombs going off (a larger ratio of C14 to C12 is present after an atomic bomb goes off).

We then got to go into the aquarium to see some live fish, rays and catsharks. The researchers at UOT study some of these creature's breeding patterns, which can be important information if something like a tsunami or another natural hazard impacts their habitat.

I'm sure tomorrow will be just as informative!

Today was filled with learning! We learnt about how many seemingly unrelated things are connected, like how earth tectonics making deep trenches can have a positive impact on fish and fishing industry, and how fishing industry can negatively affect the ocean by putting plastic into the ocean due to a tsunami (up to one third of the Great Pacific garbage patch was from fishing gear washed into the sea in the 2011 Japan earthquake).

It was also interesting to see how technology can positively and negatively affect risk assessment and decision making made by governments.

And finally, after that action pack day...

Also, speaking of natural hazards, we felt a 4.5 magnitude Earthquake today in class! It was the first Earthquake that I've ever felt! It was like a truck was driving past outside our room. Lucky Japanese infrastructure is built to withstand far more intense Earthquakes than what we had today, or else I may have felt concerned!

This is unlike Canberra, which only has three Earthquake resistent buildings (Parliament House, Telstra Tower, and a communications building in Deacon). Because Canberra's risk of a large Earthquake is so low, this isn't a very large concern, which is good!
