My Documentary Structure Sheet
A COLLEGE STUDENT'S ATTEMPTS TO REMAIN FIT DURING SCHOOL
With this film, I want to show what a college student has to through in order to remain fit and the many reasons that prevent this from happening. I will show this by having pictures of my schedules (where I show when I intend to go to the gym), whether I seem to be able to go by looking at what the specific day lays out for me, if I actually get to make it to the gym or not, if not, record myself saying why or even showing what I had to do instead; if I do make it to the gym, record the moment when I get there, maybe while in the workout, and leaving the gym. The main conflict with the film is to show everything that has to do with it since it's something that is part of my everyday life, and everything I do can impact it, I am not sure if I will be able to record everything. I want my audience to feel sympathetic and concerned towards college students and want to find a way to help make college student's lives healthier since not only this affects their health but also their grades.
My film's subject is myself. It is important that my audience knows that besides going to the gym becomes I really want to be more fit and healthy, I also need for health problems. I got a nerve pinched during the summer and I was supposed to be doing some exercises for strengthening and stretching my back, which I have not been able to for the time being. Because of this, my back is hurting again and now I really need to exercise as a must and not just fun. I want them to know how important it is for me to go to some yoga classes or at least leave out sometimes to stretch and stuff like that at least 3 times a week (even though it should everyday).
a. The activity in the sequence is getting to the gym and completing a full workout session.
b. This conflict relates to me since it is something that I try to do on an everyday basis and not only does it affect me keeping a healthy weight, but it also determines whether or not I can recover well from my back injury.
c. The subtext of the sequence is the different reasons why anyone ends up not going to completing their fitness goals.
d. The overall structure of the sequence is first, collecting data; that is how many times I complete a full workout and the reasons why I did not. Second, analyzing the data and putting it all together as in a recap. Third, showing what the result was and just exposing the life of a college student and the obstacles to a more fit lifestyle.
e. The sequence supports the statement I made in section II since it will expose the reasons or circumstances that can push fa college student to be inactive or not get the amount of activity suggested everyday.
f. The facts that the audience will gather about the subject from the sequence are that me going to the gym is more of a need, something that is essential for my recovery. Also, that I really do try to make get to workout. Last, that even though I am organized with my time and try to manage it well, by having schedules planned out, I, many times, still do not get to it as much as I want.
g. The key imaginary will be my everyday schedule, showing specifically when I am planning to work out, the sticky flags on my wall that show the amount of times I am expecting to workout in an amount of time and the times I actually worked out, showing myself in workout clothes or my gym bag, going to the gym or the alternative activity that kept me from going to the gym, and working out.
a. Marcela Vasquez Calderon, this is myself, the author of the documentary
b. I am the main character of the conflict.
c. I am the most important part of the film since everything will depend on the decisions I make and whether I work out or not.
d. My goals in the conflict are keeping all my actions real and not letting them be influenced by this documentary
a. I, Marcela, want to go to the gym to either workout on my own or take a class, as many times as I can, ideally at least 3 times a week.
b. I do not stand for any conflicting beliefs.
c. The film puts me in position my only showing recordings that are related to working out, or a reason why I cannot workout that day.
d. The confrontation of the film is when I do not get to workout on a day.
a. The progression of time in my film is every day.
b. Important information will be revealed either at the beginning of the day, if I already know that I will not be able to work out and I will be saying the reason or showing what I am doing instead of working out at that moment. Also showing the moment I am leaving my dorm if I am already dressed to work out, and the moment I get to the gym and/or the actual work out.
c. The climatic sequence I imagine is kind of a reality show, where I wake up everyday, say what my intentions of the day are related to working out, and then what actually happens. I am talking to the camera like specifically showing what is going on and acknowledging that I am being recorded.
d. This rising action relates to the other sequences since it is the most basic, where all the data is being collected.
e. I do not intend or use any other sequences or interviews while storytelling.
I do not have any special considerations in regards to special effects for the film. I want it to look very natural and on the spot. All the narration will be done at the moment and directed to the camera.
I want the ending to show how college is not a health friendly zone and that maybe directives should be taking more efforts into improving this sector. Staying healthy is extremely important, not only for everyone, but even more for the college students who take on very unhealthy lifestyles in order to accomplish all their goals and requirements that they face during this time of their lives. By the end of the film, I just want to show an inside of my life and how even when there is stuff that you have to do and is important for your health, sometimes school and bad timing get in between.
