At the beginning of 2018, there was already talk about this so-called Southeast Asian renaissance, mainly due to the continuous rise of contemporary art institutions in the region. In the Philippines, if the number of people going to Art Fair Philippines is an indicator of the Filipinos’ increasing consciousness in art, then it appears that there might be indeed a growing art-going public.
One of CNN’s correspondents, the artist and educator Christian Tablazon, chose The Game of the Real, a group show that I conceptualized and participated in, as a highlight in 2018 in Philippine art. Visit the link to read more.

This work synthesizes the three painters who I claim as the forebears of my painting: Giotto, Malevich, and Matisse. Kindly note that Agnes Martin’s lines are simply too different from mine. I signed this painting, also in oil, after executing the documentation above.

Erased Portrait of the Artist as Filipino (Triptych I)
Oil, enamel and chalk on canvas
48 inches x 151 inches
2017
As much of Philippine National Artist Nick Joaquin’s canonical play was painstakingly written on the blackboard-like surface, and then erased. The work suggests the provisional status of a national identity, and pedagogy’s role in constructing it, while exploring meaningful methods of creating a referential abstract image.

The two kinds of beer are iconic for two different generations, while the piece invokes the informal exchange of secret information, honest opinion and provisional insights commonly practiced over beer in Philippine culture. With its title lifted from the song popularized by Frank Sinatra, it is an homage to Nick Joaquin.
