I have seen alot of hate from people who hated how John Boyega’s Finn from Star Wars was mostly inept, ran alot, and was practically a coward. I had those same thoughts at first, but then I watched the movie again. We completely missed the damn point.
When I saw Finn with the lightsaber in the posters and trailers, I thought that John Boyega was going to be the newest black action hero along the lines of Will Smith in ID4, and Wesley Snipes in Blade. A cool, fearless badass who could do everything, and not even mess his fade up while doing it. But that was not the case with Finn. First time we saw him, he was freaked out after a massacre, and sweating like a runaway slave. Throughout the first half of the movie, all he wanted to do was run, while everybody around him kept cool for most of the time. I was frustrated by this, because he seemed to be so self serving. But I didn't realize until later that we were getting a different type of hero. A hero who had no idea that he was being heroic. Rey may be the main hero of the trilogy, but these are my reasons why Finn was the main hero of The Force Awakens.
1. It was Finn himself who had decided to defect from the First Order. It wasnt because he was scared to fight, but because they were evil and batshit crazy, and he wanted no part of it. If someone who was raised to kill and be a terrorist all their life had decided to run away, and help stop that organization before they did more harm, would you call them a coward? Nope. He would be a hero.
2. Finn saved Poe!!!!! Surely one of the reasons why he did it was because he needed a pilot, but the whole reason why he was leaving was still heroic. Without saving Poe, all of the events of the movie couldn't happen, and even after he thought Poe had died, he wanted to continue his mission. Hero!
3. Finn found Rey! Without him, she would still be in the desert scavenging for food. Finn could have just minded his business, and stayed out of sight, but when he saw her getting attacked, he ran over to help her, even though she didn't need the help. He recognized BB-8 and told Rey he was resistance. Of course Rey was a pretty girl who showed interest in him being in the resistance, and he was clearly lying to get him a ride away from the FO, but in all, when he thought he was thinking for himself, he was still helping the good guys. Hero!
4. Finn didn't leave when Starkiller attacked the Republic. He could have gotten on that ship with those other aliens and become a pirate, but nope. He immediately went to Han to tell him about Starkiller, and he stayed and defended Maz’castle when it was attacked by the same people he had been running from. It takes guts to take on the same people you were supposed to be fighting for. The minute Rey was taken, he no longer thought about himself. He overcame his fears, and decided to save her. Hero!
5. Finn helped Leia & the Resistance find Starkiller, and learn how to destroy it. While he was a janitor (sigh) he knew where all of the best places to bomb the base. He was practically the lead on the mission. This is the same person who was trying his hardest to get the fuck away from these guys,and now he helped plan the attack. He punked Captain Phasma, who he was clearly scared of in the beginning. How is that cowardly. Hero!
6. Finn took on Kylo Ren, even though he knew he was going to get his ass handed to him. He didn't have the benefit of force powers (yet) like Rey & Kylo. So for him to use the lightsaber to fight Kylo, while Rey was unconscious was the most heroic moment of the movie and he sacrificed his life, so Rey have her big moment and save the day. So for Finn to be a coward, he damn sure did alot of brave stuff in this movie. Heroes don't always have to be born fearless badasses. Sometimes they can evolve into one. Finn was the most realistic and grounded character in the story, and for anyone to be upset about it should think about what I said. I always love to see multidimensional characters that evolve. We literally saw a janitor help save an entire solar system. Now he’s gonna have a badass scar on his back, and hopefully some cybernetic enhancements. I am even more excited about Finn now.
