Hey, Marcus, we recently got a new case, though it's pretty much cold. None of us can really figure it out. A lot of the data and evidence seem purposefully cut out. I hope you'll be willing to take it. If anyone can figure this out, it's you. Here's all we have, thanks! — Anonymous note on a file sitting on Marcus's desk.
Marcus would come into his office without nozaki for once and glance at the note, confused...wow, cut out was an understatement, confetti held more paper than this case... he'd sigh to himself and crack his knuckles
"Alright...shouldn't be too hard...let's get a look at this poor bastard"
It was night by the time the first abnormalities started.
A slight ringing in his ears that wouldn't go away, the temp of the room spiking..
Eventually, in the corner of the office, a man appeared. The door hadn't been opened, and the windows weren't tampered with, not to mention it would be easy to see someone entering through the window.. So how..?
The man stood by quietly, just watching Marcus as he worked through the little information he had. His face was obscured by shadows, eyes gleaming yellow in the dim light.
"Shouldn't you be home by now?" The man would say, voice rough yet gentle at the same time.
Paint it black would erupt from marcus's shadow reeling up a punch with its clawed knuckles before stopping centimeters from the man's face and backing off
"...I assume you're my client for this case?..."
The man would hardly even react to Paint it Black, merely blinking at the action before looking back at Marcus. There was a sort of familiarity to him, but Marcus hadn't met this man before in his life.
"In a way, I suppose. Though you'd be better off leaving the dead where they lie."
"...right...well, unfortunately you don't get a say in the matter, whoever dumped you at my door wanted me on.this case specifically and I'd feel bad letting them down."
Marcus would shrug
"Marcus Rivera. But I'm sure you knew that"
He was quiet for a bit, watching Marcus with a slight tilt to his head. Eventually, he'd speak again.
"Yes, I know that. Not for reasons you'd might think, though."
He would huff slightly, a small laugh but nothing too substantial.
"You're definitely his son, saying things like that."
"You've heard of my father?...not surprising...he's not the lind of guy to go unheard of...much to my mom's dismay when someone tries to fight him"
He'd chuckle dryly
"Anyway, how about we get started on this case of yours?"
The autumn air was a bit crisp today. Not unusual, the weather got cold early this year. There was a light sprinkle of snow, but it melted instantly the second it touched the ground. Some people seemed nervous about it, given the sudden decent of a rather horrid winter storm just the previous year. It was natural to be cautious after such an event.
Habiki hustled through the streets, carrying a small bag and two cups of coffee in a drink carrier. He hurriedly entered Jun's place of work when he finally reached it, shaking out his hair to release it of any snow. The snow may be melting on the ground, but it absolutely clung to him. Again, it's not a surprise. He was so cold that he was practically a magnet to the stuff. He took a deep breath. Briefly, he set down the bag to fix his face mask, grabbing the bag again and continuing to the reception desk.
".. Jun left his lunch again," His voice was raspy from lack of use, and his eyes just slightly squinted behind his glasses while he tried to adjust to the difference in lighting. When given the all-clear, he continued on, heading right to the man's office. He knocked lightly on the door, not wanting to interrupt anything further as he stood outside, looking very much like a lost puppy as he did so.
...Who did Jun say his patient for this hour was? Eh, probably no one he knew, so this shouldn't be too big of a deal. Just enter, drop off the coffee and food, and then leave. Simple enough, right?
Nozaki would be sitting in a chair, he felt the cold breeze graze his neck before habiki even entered as He'd turn to face his old friend
"...hello kei."
Kei seized up immediately, going from relaxed to tense in mere seconds. He swallows audibly, but no words come out of his mouth. Instead, all he could really do was stare owlishly at Yu. He glances between Yu and Jun before slowly setting the things in his hand before he dropped them thanks to the tremble that was building.
".. Y—" He stopped himself from saying his name, it felt... wrong to for some reason. He clears his throat. "..Nozaki. It's.. uh- I.. I didn't — Apologies for the intrusion I can... leave."
"You don't have to. Doc is out of the building getting some more of those little strawberry candies he likes keeping in that little bowl... why, you avoiding me?"
Nozaki would stare blankly
"I.. see."
He glances around the room a bit, anywhere but him, and fixes his face mask a few times out of clear habit and an attempt to self soothe. He's nervous, and try as he might to hide it he knew Nozaki can read him like an open book.
"It's.. not my intention. I just- ..I don't know. I didn't think you wanted to see me."
"Mmm...no, in fact I believed it the other way around. I thought it was you who didn't want to see me."
Yu would stare at habiki like a cat, just a fixed gaze
Kei would seem a bit shocked, blinking a few times but unable to meet Yu's gaze.
"Oh. That's..." He managed a small chuckle. "No wonder Jun was trying to get me to talk to you so much–"
"Well you're here now, and I have an hour left in my appointment. So let's talk."
Yu would state again, blunt as ever

Marcus after taking his first life
It was just a typical day, really, slow going and even relaxing for once. Thanks to the recovery stages she went through, Minerva was now closer to Marcus than ever, even beginning to regard Mitsu as her mother and hang around the family more than she used to. She's definitely improved quite a bit, now back to living with her wife and daughter.
On this quiet afternoon, the birds still chirping outside as the sun lazily peeked out from behind a few buildings, Marcus gets a sudden text from his eldest daughter.
'Hey, dad! Angie and I have a surprise for you and Ma. Are you able to meet us anywhere today? We can come by the house too if that's better ❤️'
Marcus would snap back awake from his 9-5 malaise, noticing the text from Minerva and stretching. He knew mitsu probably had work still but he'd be free, responding to his daughter
"Yeah. I can swing by in a bit, give me a little I'm on my way."
'Alright, we'll see you soon!'
Minerva sent that last text before getting up from the couch with a tiny bit of struggle, taking a small breath as she stretched slightly. She rubbed at one od her eyes as she stepped over to the kitchen for a piece of fruit.
A few rapid knocks from paint it black would signal that Marcus arrived fine, Marcus opening the door after a few seconds
"Min, what's up? Ypu never really call out of the blue like that?'
"Everything's fine, dad, you worry way too much."
She laughs slightly, leaning against the counter a bit. She rubs her shoulder, working out a small knot in the muscle there; she had been working a lot more recently.
"Just had some news I thought I'd share with you is all."
"I say I worry just enough for the situations we've been through together minerva."
He'd give a dry laugh, cocking an eyebrow at the mention of news
"Oh? Everything ok??"
She gave a small laugh to his words, nodding in agreement and letting him off easy with the sentiment. They had been through quite a bit up to this point, and she'd certainly given him lots of reasons to worry about her.
"Yeesss, everything is fine, just like I said before. I just have some pictures from my ultrasound appointment. I thought you'd want to see."
She loads up the images on her laptop, passing it to him as she goes to sit back down with a heavy sigh.
"Oh...oh wow min..."
She would be able to hear her dad choke up a little...she'd grown so much...and he was so proud of her
"Congratulations dear! Hah...look at you...grown up on me...already starting a family..."
