Red Queen Series - @chrisevan (I hope you like it!)
“I will never make the mistake of loving you ever again.“ “So you choose him?” That’s all this ever was. Jealousy. Rivalry. All so shadow could defeat the flame.”

&. MAVEN CALORE / @godscourt:
you took her hand. ever so gentle, so charming. cal wouldn’t and couldn’t find out - not only because this would put a spanner in your works, but mother wasn’t ready to enact the plan just yet. and if cal did find out, your mother would have to pull more than just a few strings to get you off the executioners table; but yet the girl in front of you ( the red girl… ) the same one you knew you were falling for, would be executed for treason against the crown. along with any other terrorist of the scarlet guard that would be captured within this already failed coup. “ he will never find out, mare, not unless we want him to know. i promise you, i will never let anything happen to you. “ as words were spoken, her hand was brought to his lips; soft kiss. “ nothing will take you from me. “
THE WORDS BROUGHT HER UNEXPECTED COMFORT. In this world of intrigues and games, secrets and lies, deceit in all its forms, it was... comforting to have someone on her side. Someone who Mare knew she could depend on when things go south –– and they would; she’s lived her life in the stilts knowing this.
The comfort brought her an unexpected blush. It sat high on her cheeks, and she PRAYED the color they’ve bleached out of her skin with powder hid it. Though, she had a feeling it didn’t. “ We should... rejoin the others. ” She didn’t make a move to go. Instead, peered out the high-vaulted window with melancholy on her face. “ Does anyone here ever take the time to look outside? To watch the sun set... ” Her eyes met Maven’s. “ Or rise? ”
For a storm is certainly coming, whether from my hand or someone else’s, and I have no idea who will survive the dawn.

&. GISA BARROW / godscourt:
the news of shade’s death hurt. especially after you just got him back, from the war and from a pretend execution. as you sat on the end of mare’s cot, dark eyes glanced up to her. “ you need to stop blaming yourself for his death, mare. it’s not anyone’s fault, he must have known the risks. farley will get over it. “ knew there was the imminent threat looming that mare was going away again. on another mission, this time to save thousands of red children being forced into a suicide mission. “ but i can’t lose another sibling, you understand that right, mare ? “ / @marecle
HOW COULD SHE? It was illogical but her mind promised that her hand had something to do with it; that if it weren’t for Mare, in some way, shape or form, Shade Barrow would still be alive. Not buried beneath a crude tomb-stone, beneath earth that was too far from home. There’d been no time to mourn him after the funeral; no time for her to grieve. So she’d wrapped it up like an unwanted present and shoved it to the back of her mind, where it festered like an infection and bore down on her shoulders in the rare times where Mare was alone with her thoughts. Were it not for her sister, or the BLESSED company of Cal, who knew where her mind could take her. Guilt was the very least of it.
But still, she understood her sister’s fear. The truth was though, there was a very real part of Mare that knew it was likely she would not make it out alive. If she needed to, she would go down swinging for the cause. For Shade. For every Red that had been victimized. She couldn’t promise Gisa anything in good conscience, but knew if anything happened to her, her soul would RIP apart. Their family couldn’t take much more loss. Did that make her selfish, for still wanting to fight? To avenge them all?
She wasn’t sure.
“ I know, ” nodding, Mare, caught her sister’s eyes. “ I’ll do my best. I swear. ”
Tonight I call my anger grief, tomorrow it will be a forest fire.

&. EVANGELINE SAMOS / @godscourt:
“ you shouldn’t look so comfortable. “ cell door was between them, you could feel the amount of silent stone from through the door. thankfully it couldn’t affect you here, and so your dress, so ornately made stayed in one piece. for now; mind couldn’t help cast your mind to elane, sure that it would fall off swiftly later for her. but mare, she was a red, and so you still had to appear as the iron queen to her. and with maven’s new engagement to iris cygnet, to finally end a war. you were free of the potential crown ( you were bitter of course, you won queenstrial. by tradition the crown of norta belonged to you. ) however, in the way maven was leading, you doubted that norta would last much longer as a single state.
cruel smile, his obsession with mare would truly drive this country to ruin, and since cal was the traitor prince, the crown logically fell to you. you were the intended, and iris was not nortan. and you were not going to stand by and watch a lakelander rule your kingdom. “ get up, we’re going on a walk. you look pathetic in there, “ / @marecle
“ YOUR OPINION IS WORTH NOTHING TO ME, ” Mare says, attempting to spit the lightning she cannot weave with her tongue, but what comes is a fire-flame sputtering. She has been LOCKED up for too long, the silent stone like a suffocating tomb with hands to choke her with. Evangeline Samos, while she may or may not know it, is a ––– and Mare cannot believe it has come to this –– a strangely welcome change of pace.
Anything is welcome to the OVERBEARING silence, and Maven’s occasional visits to her cell.
When the door opens, and a burst of air that does not float with dust motes tentatively steps into her cell, she finds the energy to push up onto her feet. The thought of NEW air in her lungs is enough to walk alongside Evangeline like a dog on a leash. After the humiliations Maven has made her endure, it is nothing nothing nothing. “ Does the king know about this? ”
Okay but seriously
@marecle
How does it feel to be used, Mare Barrow?
&. MAVEN / firecoatedrain:
blue hues focused upon the red before him, or whatever she was. his mother was still trying to make sense of it, and honestly when she was like this, it was easier to stay away. a smile crept upon his face as he noticed her hand upon her corset. eyebrows raising as he nodded along in agreement. ❝ —— you will be fine. i get it though. i’ve spent all my life as a silver, and i —– it’s sometimes hard being in someone elses shadow. ❞ the corner of his mouth twitched, but he managed to keep the smile upon his face. ❝ but we will figure it out, one step at a time. i mean if you want my help, i can help you. ❞ he allowed the blush to form upon his face. allowed the feeling rush over him. so much that it scared him. but he dare not let it show.
BREATHE. SHE JUST NEEDED TO... BREATHE. But it was damn hard when it felt like even the walls themselves were watching her ––– and for all Mare knew, they were. “ Of course, ” she said on an exhale, nodding. She was GLAD to have Maven on her side. Someone who knew –– to whatever extent –– what it was like to be an outcast. Someone who knew the STRANGENESS of what she was and would help her keep that secret... a secret. She’d add Cal to that count but, she still didn’t know what to make of the soon-to-be-king. “ Thank you. Really... I don’t know what I’d do if you weren’t here. I’ve only been here a few days and already it feels so SUFFOCATING. Though, the good food does help. ”
&. AIRA MERANDUS / godscourt:
eyes flicked over her. anxiety was more than evident in her features. farley had said that she was likely a spy - sent by king maven, considering how prominent you had been in court since you were young. but surely mare could see through to the truth, the second maven had found out about you, he had used you in the way he used mare. in an attempt to quell the support the scarlet guard had. it wasn’t until chaos had descended in the capital that you had finally been able to escape that. of course, you loved your faux - cousin still. you had heard his thoughts from no matter the distance in the castle; you couldn’t hear him now, but you knew he was only in pain.
but it also meant that you had known the entirety of the plan against mare, you knew the truth, but yet you had never stepped forward with the truth, who would have believed you anyway ? ( part of you wished that was only elara’s influence. ) it never ended up being the case. and yet as you stared down the little lightning girl, you had no idea whether to beg her for mercy, or to just let yourself be killed. but you were sure that she wasn’t stupid to let you be executed, she must have learnt now that nothing should be taken for face value. “ we meet again, lightning girl. “ / @marecle
MARE. MAREENA. RED. SILVER. NEWBLOOD. Titles and names –– that was all anyone ever cared about. Who was she? Who were they? What DEFINED them? Titles and names were nothing in Mare’s eyes. Brother, sister, mother, father, friend, foe. ANYONE COULD BETRAY ANYONE. Mare chose to no longer define herself by the names others gave her. She was Mare Barrow. She was a Red. She was also, a Newblood. And she was the lightning girl –– no longer little, and no longer theirs.
“ Wish the circumstances were better. ” It takes conceivable effort for logic to push past anger. Knowing Aira’s powers as a Silver, knowing what she had known ALL ALONG ––– Mare’s lightning is a river of fury running through her body, arcing from rib to rib, collating around her wounded heart like an electric CAGE. She reigns it in. Her patience on the other hand... “ Why didn’t you say anything? ” She bursts out, brows knitted, brown eyes like burning coals in the ground. “ You KNEW. And you didn’t say anything. And now the King is dead. Maven is in power, and Silvers DESPISE us more than ever. ”
