Just said screw it and responded to the rejection from an entry level part time job by being like where do you expect me to get experience from. Like it’s a part time entry level job (basically fancy retail) why are you picking candidates that already have multiple positions in the field under their belt. I’m so tired of today’s job market and unemployment I’ve been applying for low paying jobs for a whole year and nobody hires me.

I don’t even have a bad record just a gap on my resume from when my mum had a mental breakdown and I had to parent my siblings for a while and suspend my postgrad. I went to the third best university in the country for my subject and got decent grades. I got three A*s in my A Levels. I volunteered and worked in a couple of places at university. But I can’t have multiple years of experience because how on earth would I have that.

At this point I kind of hate other applicants too. Why are so many people applying to part time and entry level jobs when they apparently have so much fucking experience that they’re the obvious choice. In the few times I’ve been lucky enough to get an interview it’s been me recording myself without a real human to speak to. Everyday I’m humiliating myself just to have the chance at earning a basic living and it doesn’t work.

My family is judgemental, my friends who have rich parents and immediately got jobs out of university are judgemental, the recruiters are judgemental. I have no money even though I’m working for hours each day just sending in personalised job applications which are consequently ignored.

Like fuck the government and fuck recruiters and corporations and HR and even small shops and Tony Blair and boomers with three houses and all of these unempathetic people who are screwing over people my age and blaming it on our alleged laziness. At this point I’ll just apply for every job in the world and then kill myself.

The free speech society at my university is having Helen Joyce to speak and people are sooooo mad about it. People keep explaining that the point is you can counter the argument through questions if you want to because it’s a free speech society and then the response is ‘oh but that legitimises her argument’ and it’s like ok yeah then don’t go?

I swear to god if these people could come up with one coherent point they would immediately jump on the opportunity to argue with her but because they know she’s smarter and right and also a respectful debater rather than a cartoon villain they just want to no platform her. Instead they’re having another event at the same time to ‘centre trans voices’ as if hearing people whine about how unsafe they are in a top university in a western country will do literally anything good at all.

Anyway watch this space I wish I could go see Helen Joyce but I’m not about to get doxxed or ruin my already slim employment chances. I bet she drops some coherent and well argued truth nukes providing the event isn’t cancelled.

And now the students union has released an ass statement about it and all the woke friends I had at university are reposting stuff about how sad it is that Hasan Piker and Cenk Uygur had their application to travel to the uk revoked and now can’t speak at the Oxford Union because free speech but the same people are livid about Helen Joyce????

I do think that writing of complex female characters is actually so much more natural when the character comes first and they don’t try and make them aspirational. Two of my favourite shows are the thick of it and VEEP, which have amazingly written women characters. Nicola Murray and Selina Meyer especially, but also the side characters who are women are also great too.

I think what makes them good as women characters in part is that they’re victims to the patriarchy around them and care about things like beauty standards but their characters are more actualised because they’re victims interact with those standards realistically rather than in some abstract way. Like Selinas lying about her age and enforcing rigid beauty standards on herself and her daughter not because she enjoys the process of maintaining her appearance but rather the validation and feeling special she gets from being perceived as attractive. Or Nicola wearing trainers around the office but having to rapidly change into heels whenever she makes a public appearance, being relied on more than her husband to take care of her children, being called ‘glummy mummy’ even though she’s smilier and better looking than most all the male characters on the show.

My take is that the girlboss trope is exhausting to watch not because it’s unrealistic to have women in power, but because it often makes the extra steps women have to go through to be considered powerful seem like an advantage rather than a setback in an ‘eyeliner sharp enough to kill a man’ kind of way. It’s uncomfortable to watch women characters who effortlessly trot around in heels and makeup and dresses whilst doing stressful jobs because no woman in the world is actually doing that. It’s uncanny. I think if there was a movie about Joan of Arc or Elizabeth I where they were played more like Nicola Murray or Selina Meyer it would be very interesting.
