If the name of this yearâs U.S. Poet Laureate sounds familiar, that could be because Joy Harjo was also last yearâs pick for the job. In a statement announcing the reappointment, Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden called Harjo âan inspiring and engaging poet laureate,â who would âhelp the Library showcase Native poets from coast-to-coast.â
Hear Harjo read her poem âPerhaps the World Ends Hereâ

âWe all have reasons for moving. I move to keep things whole.â
This sacrifice is necessary and will even lead to good on many levels if only, when it is all over, we donât forget we are fundamentally vulnerable and that our actions have consequences.

In almost every major literature there are works that make you love being human, and make you love and revere the humanity of other people. That is the great potential of any art.

I recently read her inimitable novel Gilead and I canât stop thinking about it. I absolutely loved it and it was exactly the right book for me at the right time. President Obama was onto something with loving this book as he does.

Oh, Vermont should be beautiful this time of the year, with all that snow.

to descend and to be beautiful while it does so; as for purpose there is none, it is simply one of those gorgeous things that was made to do what it does perfectly and to last, as almost nothing does, almost forever.

WHEN HENRY JAMES, of all people, was saying goodbye once to his young nephew Billy, his brother William's son, he said something that the boy never forgot. And of all the labyrinthine and impenetrably subtle things that that most labyrinthine and impenetrable old romancer could have said, what he did say was this: "There are three things that are important in human life. The first is to be kind. The second is to be kind. The third is to be kind."

Avett Brothers - High Steppinâ
It took me a few listens and viewing of the video but this song is stuck in my guts now
I dig this new song so much.
The best beggars are choosers The best winners are losers The best lovers ain't never been loved And first place ain't easy The hard part is believing The very last word is love I'm a-high steppin', high bettin' Love givin', I'm a-love gettin' I'm a stranger, I love stretchin' out my wheels Overnightin' on the desert strip Makin' time and losin' grip Drivin' circles in the canyons of my mind
âWe havenât located us yet.â
-The Darjeeling Limited (2007) dir. Wes Anderson
