here's how the buffyverse can come back in a big way: we finally do a nikki wood show!

i mean can you imagine how fucking cool a buffyverse show set in 1970s new york with a slayer like nikki wood as your titular character would be? there is sooo much unexplored about her.

was she called while she was pregnant, before, or after? who is robin's father? why isn't he in the picture? what was her day-to-day like; she clearly didn't have much help seeing as she was out late slaying with her young son. what was her interpersonal life like —that made her finally give into spike???

and besides the captivating character exploration that this show would present, can you imagine the rockin soundtrack potential? the costuming, the set design!? and i'm gonna need it to be shot on film (with good lighting and og btvs effects).

the next question is who would you cast as nikki?

my dad came to the US in the mid-80s, and when he did, one of my aunts (who had come to the US a few years prior) gave him a list of tv shows to watch. the popular ones, the ones she knew everyone was talking about. she wanted to make sure he was up to date on his american pop culture knowledge, because that meant his american colleagues wouldn't be able to isolate him for the simple fact that they couldn't relate to him. he could participate in conversations, he wouldn't be the weird indian man no one really ever got to know that they could then throw under the bus later. he could become "one of them". she asked him to get into american football and basketball, even though he was already a far bigger cricket fan and didn't really care about other sports.

when yuna is talking to montreal's gm, she assures him "[she's] the world's biggest metros fan" and it's how she came to feel canadian, her dad sitting them down on saturday nights to watch hockey and her becoming a fan of the metros. it's not lost on me that this comes right after the gm is talking about how they're thrilled shane is asian and saying that stuff about breaking barriers. and i think this is a very specific facet to the way asian people are treated in the west. there's a lot of pressure to "prove" you're really canadian, or american, or australian, or whatever, because asian people are seen as perpetual foreigners and outsiders. this is what underpins a lot of the effort to assimilate.
