Noticing her move for her boot did not startle the Cat, though he was cautious as always he half expected it. I mean, he was quiet, and this was the time of war. When she spoke he gave a slight sly smile as if he was up to something before shaking his head and looking down for a moment. “My apologies mademoiselle, I should have knocked or something.” He waved his hand as she apologized as well for her reaction giving a small chuckle as he spoke. “Now is not the time to be relaxed and in a state of unawareness. The situation, especially with guards around every corner, was one that I would expect from a trained operative.” He maneuvered around her as she set the bowl on the table sliding into the chair as he leaned back in it a bit.
"I would love something to eat mon ami, if you wouldn’t mind it. I am rather famished from moving the boxes of weapons into the war room." This wasn’t the least bit true as he merely warped them all into place after placing the first one but he didn’t really mind using it as an excuse to eat. Tapping the table a bit he spoke finally. "At least you are distracted, and busy, most are left with their thoughts. A dangerous thing."
"No, no it's ok really... it was my fault, I mean I expect people to be around, it's just the others are usually louder, and well if we had been discovered, I bet they'd want to take us unaware" Maria said while offering Chess a small smile, "me being so distracted is unacceptable" she said agreeing with the magician's statement, "I just, lately... I don't know where I have my mind" she watched him take a seat and was grateful for the company, the last few days had been absolutely hell for everybody, she tried her best to stay strong for everybody but there was just so much she could take, besides she could sense as if most people tried they hardest not to be around the place longer than it was needed, too much painful memories, Maria thought, half of the inhabitants taken.
She nodded and began to prepare a decent meal, she picked up a saucepan and poured some pasta to reheat, "It was so hard on all of us, no matter how much we try to stay strong" she said while continuing to move around the kitchen, "I mean I vowed I'll never let the queen make cry again, I ... but I don't know what's happening to me," she added while grabbing stuff here and there to make Chess a sandwich, "it's like something inside me finally snapped, I just... Mere, I can stop thinking how she must have been strong until the end, I mean was she tortured for information? If she did then she died because she didn't turn us in..." the tears threaten to fall, she didn't had control of her feelings anymore, and it scared her, "and John..." she whispered while checking on the pasta, "I haven't heard anything about him... my baby brother... I just... I need to know" she finished the sandwich and set it across from the magician, "how am I supposed to help, to actually be of use, when I can't even stop crying?" she poured the pasta onto a plate and set it next to the sandwich, "anything to drink?"

Chess had opened the doorway into HQ slowly, piquing around the corners inside with his magical sensory to ensure that no one of danger was present. One could never be too cautious in this time of unease. Stepping forward as he lifted the large crate into the main room he placed it down on the floor, sitting on the crate before looking around making sure that he was alone. Snapping his fingers the rest of the crates appeared behind him, littering the room as he stood up feeling accomplished and walked out into the hallway towards the kitchen to get himself a snack.
"Oh, I didn’t see you there." The only thought that crossed his mind in that moment, shit, good thing she wasn’t a few rooms over. As he walked along side Maria towards the refrigerator. “How are things? Dumb question, I know considering, but worth asking nonetheless mon cher.”
The last couple of days had not been easy, then again their lives in HQ had never been easy, but there is something about losing half of your family to the queen that somehow makes things more difficult. Maria had always pride herself for being able to handle and hide her emotions, but when the news had arrived she had let the wall she had built all those years ago crumble. Now she found herself crying at the slight memory, even the smallest of task was enough to bring her to tears, she was vulnerable, but a part of her still knew how to make sure people won't notice. This was not a time to be weak, to reminisce on the past, to hold on to your ghost, this was a time to be alert, to keep going, to fight back. Maria was glad for the fact that even with more than half of the rebels captive there was still a lot of things to do at HQ, she still had to cook and clean, there were still people she had to take care of, there was still work to do.
She had almost dropped the mixing bowl when she heard the voice, one of her hands flying to her boot, she had started to wear her daggers again, "Oh Chess... you scared me" she shook her head and cursed herself, she should've been alert, what if the guards had come in instead of the magician, "I'm sorry, I've been distracted lately, that's not the welcoming you deserve" she set the bowl on the table, "Things are busy" that was more or less true, "I'm thankful for busy actually. How about you? Want something to eat? Drink?"
Then why do I feel like … like all of this was my fault… everybody thinks so, some of them have said so… maybe they are right… because right now all I can think about is just how much I wish we had ran away… Maria I don’t want to keep our promise, I don’t want to accept that fate… tell me it’s not only me… we also promised that when all of this is over…
It's not your fault, it only means that you are human... I wish that too... everyday since that day... but there's no going back Rob, we need to finish this, please... I-

I don't know. I think that even after everything that's happened, people are still going to be weary, specially since well they now know what happens if we ever even speak of treason.
Yes, we were children, children who thought things would get better if we suddenly decided to die for the greater good… because that’s all we were trained to believe will work… I never wanted any of the rebels to feel like we did Maria… to feel like only death can pay for death…
Hey… I- I’m sorry… I never meant to make it sound … I know this is important for you… I just wish… I wish we could go back, go back to when we still had time and not waste so many years… go back and not let this come between us…go back and convince us that there’s another way… that we don’t have to watch each other die…
