Reflection on a Year of Reading Haitian Literature
Word Count: 519 Claire of the Sea Light by Edwidge Danticat Brother, I’m Dying by Edwidge Danticat The Farming of Bones by Edwidge Danticat Breath, Eyes, Memory by Edwidge Danticat Reading all those books really changed my perspective about that country and the people. Even though I'm from there, there's a lot of things that I didn't know about it. I always thought that it was a country that most people who live there most of their life wanted to leave based on things I been told and see. I learned about real life public figures that I didn't know about and events that happened in that country that I never heard of or would have know about if I didn't read it from one of the books. A comment element and themes of literature of that country was that family is really important and finding oneself. Even though most of those characters tries to push their family away they always come around when that person needed them. Another common theme amongst those books I read is death, these books didn't live anything out which made it seems like the story itself was true and not just made up. Some books sometimes don't really mentioned death that much even though that's parts of life. What I learned about life from The Farming of Bones is that no matter how much hatred someone face they shouldn't let that ruin their life and that they should keep going. From the book Brother, I’m Dying I learned that the person that people pushed away such as family is always going to be the one person they run back to in a time of need because they know that person will never give up on them. I also learned that getting sick and accepting death is part of life as someone is getting older. In the book, Claire of the Sea Light I learned that even though what someone parents does for them even if they don't like it they usually does it out of good intention and because they care about their children. I also learned that people who see a lot of people around them dying and a child who parent doesn't really pay attention to them that much if the other parent isn't alive sometimes blame themselves for their death. What I learned about life from the book Breath, Eyes, Memory is that causing one parents trouble and moving to new places and meeting new people is parts of growing up and those things will happen naturally and no parent is going to resent their kid because if they are causing troubles. What I learned about myself and reading is that I always do things at the very last minute. I always blame the readings for staying up late at night to read them when in reality I had a whole day to read the books but decided to leave it for the very last minute. I also learned about myself and reading is that I lose my focus really fast. I also learned that if I don't like a part In a book or the book is getting boring I just scroll through it so I can get over it since it's not entertaining to me. I also realize that I'm bad at choosing which books to read, when I started reading my second book that when I realize all my books were from the same author. That may have play a part in why most of them had a similar theme but they were all good so I don't regret buying them.
