Put that frown upside down
Everyone now knows that sales and marketing is everywhere. Hidden in every picture, integrated in every message. Last week I took the wrong tram, I know right?! how on earth did that happen? I thought that that would never ever happen to someone who is born and raised in Amsterdam. I found myself grumpy in the back of tram 4 instead of heading home in the 14. The tram lady on the other hand, woke up on the right side of her bed that morning.
“She gave us a proper one-man stand-up comedian show via the intercom. It only took a few not-so-funny-jokes, and my frown was upside down.”
I thought: How nice that this lady makes the best of her day and she really seemed to enjoy her job. Then I thought, could it be that the GVB asked her to do so, for good publicity. Well thank you very much, even though our lecturer warned us for this, I now look at everything wearing my marketing goggles.
What I am trying to say, yes indeed we cannot avoid marketing and yes sales is integrated in a lot of things. But sometimes we still need to believe in the good of people and companies.
Maybe I am an optimist or maybe I am just naive, but I like to think that not everything in (work)-life is about making profit. And just as that lovely tram lady, enjoy your day and try to have fun in your job!
Oh my god Michelle I think we all have the “marketing goggles” on nowadays. I also think very differently about adverts, I try analyzing them: whether they are good/bad, misleading and if they have an informational or emotional appeal. I also never though about the amount of work that was behind all the different marketing campaigns.
Good post Michelle! I also have marketing goggles, I definitly do.. But you're right sometimes I also just want to think that people are good and they also want my own good without any financial or vicious thoughts. And even if nowadays people tend to be more and more suspicious and distrustful, I still believe that sometimes I can be lucky and find some good souls. And i don't think it's being too optimistic, I just think it's being human.
