The last blog.

Am I able to see myself doing a marketing career in the future? That is what I am going to write about in my last marketing blog.

The last weeks displayed how interesting marketing is. Especially the idea of adding value to a product appeals to me. To create campaigns that are displaying the value of the product for the company and the customer sounds really challenging. The various topics of the blogs underlined the huge field of interest regarding marketing and showed how many different jobs are available. This also offers opportunities to explore and to find new ways of marketing. And who knows what is coming after social media. 

After studying and writing about marketing I decided for myself that I want to make a change. By making a change I mean to create campaigns that influence people. My favorite advert is from Nike:

This advert influenced my love for football. Since the day I saw this campaign on television I just wanted to play outside with the ball. I believe making a change can only be accomplished when as many people as possible are involved. That’s why I want to work for a big company if i make a career in marketing. Just think about your favorite campaigns, who made them ? No small companies right ? It is a long way to these positions in a company and you need to put a lot of effort and passion in it. I am not sure if I want to wait that long. But we will see what the future brings.

The End..

Over the last 2 months or so I have been blogging about different ideas and concepts relating to Marketing. 

Prior to this course, I knew Marketing was a big deal, I knew the super bowl commercial ad break went for millions of dollars, however I didn’t know there was such a science to it. 

During this blog posting era, I have learnt about very different styles of marketing and how it is adapted specifically in almost every situation, for example at the start of this course we were taught about the local marketing of global brands which is called glocalisation, we looked at the example of Doritos in Korea and the way they adapted the entire product to suit the preferences and tastes of their domestic market. This is very interesting to me and I was able to wright about an example I found by myself, It is an earlier blog post of mine, entitled “Oreos <3″. 

Along with the other marketing techniques and styles I have learnt over the course of this block I feel will be very helpful, although it was very theoretical, I feel I could use the aspects taught a lot in the future, these topics are very relatable to how we make everyday decisions, not only immediate decisions when buying items but how we are subconsciously guided into doing or choosing one thing over another. 

I think this blog posting idea was great, as it is 2015 now and how better to get experience then to be creative and manage your own blog based on marketing topics and ideas!

JUST DO IT.

In the past eight weeks of our marketing course, we came across several companies and their specific marketing strategy. There is only one company which inspired me and kept stuck in my head. The athletic sports company NIKE.

If I ever will work in a marketing area of a company, I hope I will do an exactly great job as Nike does it. NIKE does not only produce and sell sport products, the company wants to inspired people and make a change in the world. Considering the mission statement (picture above) of the company you can see that NIKE does not wants to promote itself, it wants to make a movement. This can also be seen in the following commercial of NIKE for the World Cup 2014.

I am not a big supporter of any of these players shown in the commercial, however, I like the message which NIKE wants to sent with their ‘Risk everything’ campaign. With the help of the idols of many people, NIKE is more likely to address them and are able to deliver their message in an authentic way. NIKE wants to inspire people and show that sometimes you need to take risk in life in order to achieve something. Therefore....Just do it.

Hey Marie-Sarah, thank you for your great post. I experienced this kind of marketing research of the airlines while I was traveling. Always when I wanted to book a new flight they suggested me directly a ‘unique’ and ‘last minute’ offer about hostels or anything else. Honestly it annoyed me to see on websites that ‘only’ four seats are left and as soon you are in the plane you see that the plane is half empty and you have three seats for yourself, which is great of course.

Yo Yacine, I really liked your post. You have done a great research about this topic. I did not know what happens with the cars of the catastrophe in Fukushima. I didn’t even thought about it, so thank you for bringing it up. It is quite shocking that they sell contaminated car parts to Malaysia. The Japanese government tried to prevent it with scraping the cars but who knows how many cars did landed in Malaysia before the intervention of the Japanese government.

You explained that companies might create a bad advertisement on purpose so that their brand awareness rises. Yo Jamie, great post. I wrote in later post something similar about McDonald’s and how they market their product to children. You perfectly said why it is unethical to market fast food products to children. They can not distinguish what is good and what is bad for them. This is exactly what McDonald’s and other fast food franchises use to manipulate children.

Hey Mirjam, it’s great to hear about the korean culture. For us Susy is totally unknown, but for them she is a superstar. I kind of recognized something similar in Singapore and Thailand.  People are more likely to buy a product from a brand which is market by a famous person. In my opinion that would not work in The Netherlands, as if one person would make advertisement for many companies than it wouldn’t be authentic anymore.

Yo Lukas, great Idea to associate your idea about sales person with football player, which makes it for me absolutely easy to understand your opinion. Unfortunately, I disagree with your opinion about the failing super-talent. It might be true with football players but in my opinion it does not count for salesperson. Sales person who have talent but do not get trained will still be successful as they gain from every transaction new experiences, which will make them more and more successful.

Hey Egidija, actually I have a ‘selfie stick’ for my GoPro. However, I agree with your opinion about the fact that I would not take photos of me with the stick in normal places. I use it only for activities where other people can not film, such as skiing or hiking alone on some random mountain. As you already said, just ask someone nicely. Who knows, you might meet your sole mate.

Great post Michelle, I totally share your opinion that such inventions are not necessary. Why would you spent such a big amount of money for gloves with which you can use your smartphone. Just take of your gloves..But as you already perfectly said, that’s the today’s society, which can’t stay 10 minutes disconnected. However, I am happy for the inventors of the gloves.

Anyway, I really liked to hear your personal opinion about the experience and the journey from a bad salesperson to a successful salesperson. I also share the same opinion with you that you can train to become a good salesperson. It just takes a bit longer.

This week’s topic is bad advertisement. In my very first blog I was already discussing unethical commercials which clearly belong to bad advertisement. This time I will focus on examples which are rather bad in a sense that they fail to deliver the right message to the desired audience.

“Born to be..” or “Made to be..”

About one and a half years ago I found myself walking towards an interview in Melbourne, Australia. The interview was for a job as a salesperson. On my way towards the interview I asked myself what makes an excellent salesperson. Being charismatic? Being skilled in verbal communication? Well…that should be alright, I thought. But how do I actually sell the product? That’s where the question steps in: Is a good salesperson born or trained? Luckily I received the job and started straight away with the basic training on how to sell a product. First of all, I got informed about the product. It was an energy saving power board which was funded by the Australian government.

Therefore, it was free and I just had to install the power board in the household of the people and take pictures. Selling something which is free sounds easy, right? I thought the same…but wow, was I wrong. I still remember my first day, when I was walking through the residential area, and spent my whole first day without knocking at any door, as I was too afraid. This shows, that a salesperson need to be confident and motivated. After a few days it went better but I still had trouble to convince people about my product.  That’s when I went to my colleague, who was the star of our team. He even managed to plug in his own plug in the customer’s socket during work. So I asked him if he got any tips for me or how his strategy is. He just said:” Man, I don’t have any strategy. I just do it.” Great…Thank you very much… That helps me a lot…But I guess he was one of the born salesperson, so good for him. However, I kept going and after three weeks I got better and better. The reason why I became more successful was not because of an excellent training, it was more the experience and the pressure of earning some money for tonight’s dinner. In my opinion, a person can become a good salesperson by being born as one, but this is more unlikely. Most of the great salesperson developed their skills through experiences. The more experiences a person has the quicker he can understand what is happening and try to “manipulate” the buyer towards the buy.  

For myself, I would never associate myself as a great salesperson. I quitted my job after one and a half months, as I got annoyed by people slamming the door in front of your face or insulting you and trying to hunt you off of their property.
