iconic things suzanne collins did in sunrise on the reaping:
had haymitch declare himself an lgbt+ ally
confirmed snow is still habitually crashing out over lucy gray 40 years later
made me cry over the regina george of district 12
I made a substack!
Why I'm so iffy about the brother's best friend trope, even though I enjoy it
Here's a link to my most recent (aka 2nd) post if you're interested.
The way I laughed when I realised that Incitatus, the first name of the person in charge of the tribute parade in Sunrise on the Reaping, is the name of Caligula’s horse, then horse Caligula tried to make a consul. A very apt name given the horse drama at that parade.
I think Ampert’s death was one of the most heartbreaking and terrifying ones in Sunrise on the Reaping. From the moment he was born, I bet Beetee knew his son’s death was coming, because Snow is cruel and rather punish you by letting you live in suffering than have you killed. Beetee had to mentor his son, watch him train, knowing it won’t matter how good he is because Snow won’t let his son leave the arena alive. Then comes the arena. Mutt’s that seemed designed to target Ampert attack him, leaving him nothing but a skeleton. Ensuring that there was nothing that identified Ampert as himself left to bury and mourn. Making Beetee and his family watch such a horrific thing happen. Ampert and Beetee going into the plot to blow up the arena knowing that regardless of its success Ampert would never survive.
It really solidifies that Katniss likely would have never had kids if the rebellion hadn’t happened. Snow would have had her and Peeta’s child reaped the moment it felt like the “right” time. We know he holds grudge, decades long ones so his anger at how Katniss and Peeta won would have basically guaranteed it. They could have avoided having kids, sure, but how long would that last? Either by accident due to the lack of contraceptives in the districts or because Snow all but forces them to.
cant stop thinking about sunrise on the reaping. a revolution IS really just trying again and again and again and having HOPE that itll succeed this time. and oh god plutarch talking about how they would need better timing ... the 75th hunger games arena being a clock... im SICK
One of my favourite things about Sunrise on the Reaping is going into it knowing what’s going to happen and being filled with an ever-growing sense of dread as the book goes on. Then you realise how little of the truth you know, because we know “everything” through Katniss and Peeta watching the recap of Haymitch’s reaping and games in Catching Fire, and being filled with more dread because you’ve realised it wasn’t just “using a forcefield to win” that got him punished. It was so much more than that, something no one but Haymitch knows the full extent of. Some people in 12 may know the truth of the reaping; Plutarch, Wireress, Mags and Beetee may know the truth of the plot to blow up the arena; Leonore Dove’s family may know the truth of her death, but know one but Haymitch knows the full truth. Other people know different parts but that’s it.
“sotr is mid because you already know how it ends” shut the fuck up, the point of the book is that despite knowing how it ends you would have never known what actually went down because that’s the point of propaganda, the whole book is about the power of propaganda
Sunrise on the Reaping really makes you question how many rebellions took place, how many attempts to break the arena and stop the games happened before Katniss came along. Plutarch says “Luck or better timing” and it truly is timing. Knowing that the people in the rebel plot in catching fire had already done this at least once (because this is not guaranteed to be the first attempt), makes its success make more sense.
They learned from their mistakes, they had people (aka Plutarch) on the inside in a better position, timing was essential to making the rebellion work.
Knowing the games Katniss and Peeta saw in Catching Fire was edited to fit the Capitol’s narrative is one thing, Haymitch watching it in real time, as he details everything they changed is another.
Add in the fact that Haymitch can’t do anything ti counter is, as doing so would harm the people he loves just really adds to the message and themes on propaganda, and how hard it is to fight against it, particularly when you are the people being oppressed.
Suzanne Collin’s just said fuck you to everyone who’s ever critiqued the Hunger Games as being a “teen girl saves the day” story. She said oh, Mockingjay didn’t make it clear enough? Here’s a book about how people have been rebelling for decades only to have their efforts suppressed and propagandized. Rebellion takes time and it takes failure and Katniss may have been the spark that ignited the wildfire but she did so standing atop the doused flames of everyone who came before her.
Watching Outer Banks for the first time, almost at the end of season 2 episode 5 but I have a thought.
Sarah and John B are clearly going to breakup soon, they got together in season 1 so that was bound to happen in a show with 4 seasons. Towards the end of episode 5, John B is driving Sarah to her house to be there for her little sister since their dad is about to be arrested and her brother already is. Sarah tells John B to hurry up so she can be there for Wheezie and John B says “no way I’m missing this” or something like that which makes Sarah roll her eyes and that pisses me off.
Like, she’s been upset during the episode because her dad’s going to jail, which is fair because that’s her dad but literally, your friends/bf have every right (imo) to be happy about this.
Ward killed John B’s dad, made it look like he got lost at sea. He tried to kill John B when John B found out the truth and tried to tell the police. When the Sheriff figured out the truth, Rafe killed her and Ward helped to cover it up, framing John B, resulting in him being on the run because first degree murder is life in prison and being a kid from the poor side of town means the legal system was not in his favour. This resulted in John B and Sarah going on the run where their boat flips and they almost die. John B went to prison and was nearly killed by a prisoner because of Ward. Literally all the bad shit in John B’s life is Ward’s fault.
Sarah knows this, she knows her dad deserves jail and is allowed to be upset because that’s her dad. But I don’t think she has much of a right to roll her eyes and be annoyed at the Pogue’s joy that Ward’s going to jail.
Hey! You read If We Were Villains? What was your take on that ending...?
I loved the ending.I was an emotional wreck because of but I didn’t care because it was so well-executed. I have a love/hate relationship with ambiguous endings, but this one fit the tone and atmosphere of the story in such a way that I couldn’t fault it. (Also, I liked the ambiguity because it means for once, it means the gays might not have a sad and quite gruesome ending.) I also liked the twist, because I knew that James was dead from like…the end of Act II, maybe. I love being surprised by books, as it tends to stick with you longer.
In my heart, I’m going to think James survived, because I am a sucker for happy endings (I mean my blog title is literally “sometimes, you need happy endings”). However, my brain says otherwise because of this line in Act V, Scene 5: “But that’s how a tragedy like ours or King Lear breaks your heart–by making you believe the ending might still be happy, until the very last minute.” It doesn’t entirely count out the happy endings, of course, but like, I can’t stop thinking about it when I think about the end.
But you know what, I’m going to go with what my heart says, because I need some happy in my life.
So I've just finished reading If We Were Villian's as I've decided to start getting into Dark Academia. One thing that has stuck with is the question of "When did things start to go wrong?".
You could easily say it was Halloween/Macbeth. Richard's behaviour could be said to have started due to the casting of Macbeth. We learn in the very beginning that everyone's more or less become typecast over the course of their time at university, with Richard always getting the leading male role. Whilst everyone has expectations of what roles they'll get, as the constantly lead, maybe Richard grew to not only expect being the leading man but feeling entitled to it. It's not like he doesn't deserve being lead but that doesn't mean no one else does too. Maybe his entitlement to leading male role is what lead to him being shitty to James and everyone else, which is why everyone ultimately accepted to let him die instead of trying to save him.
Maybe it started with Caesar. Something frequently mentioned is how when you play a character, you take on part of that character in you and sometimes it's hard to know when the character ends and the actor begins. Maybe everyone got too deep into their roles where everyone comes together for a murder plot to kill Caesar/Richard. Without knowing it, the plot of Caesar played out in real life, except instead of everyone stabbing Caesar/Richard, everyone but James let him die. Not direct killing but indirect. We know they all feel some guilt around it, we see how it affects everyone after.
You could also say it started well before the beginning of the book. All the years of resentment and possible rivalry building up was always going to lead to disaster, maybe not necessarily the death of one of them but something bad was always going to happen.
I think Macbeth makes the most sense but I prefer the idea that it started with Caesar. I don't know if I'm the only one who isn't 100% sure where the downfall of Richard began but if I'm not the only one, where do you think it started?
the usual demographic of the book community is being ignorant again so here's a reminder
I just finished A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik and I LOVED it. The concept is super cool and unique and I grew to love El’s character and narration. At first I found her a bit annoying, but as the book went on I grew to love reading her perspective.
I do lowkey wish I could have read Orion’s pov because I would love to see the drama unfold from his eyes.
I can’t wait to get to the next one!!!
One thing that annoys me about people complaining about booktok is that it’s a creators fault the 13 year old they know has purchased and read smut. I think if you are making content about adult books, regardless if they are romance, contemporary, scifi, etc, you should make it clear somewhere that the book you’re talking about is 18+, through your caption, verbally and/or text on the screen. However, if a 13/14 year old kid found that video, saw the clear indication it was for adults and went to buy it or got a parent to buy it, thats not the fault of the person who made the video. they made it clear this is an ADULT book, if this teenager is unable to understand that 18+ means it is inappropriate for them or you don’t bother checking that your child is reading age appropriate books, that’s literally no ones fault but your own.
I don’t even make videos about books, I just think parents and other people who get mad about this are dumb. If the video the kid got the rec from didn’t reference the fact that it’s for adults or that it contains smut, fine that’s the fault of that person but also, you could just google to check you know? But if your child doesn’t know that 18+/adult mean it’s not for them to read, that’s a you problem dude.
