â ââAch, not the only thing, feet are too big tooââ He grinned at her before moving her hand holding her book to in front of her chest. ââAye, a lift.ââ He nodded before leaning slightly to scoop Marie up into his arms. ââWhere ya headed?ââ He asked.
â⥠   âI see, I suppose that might explain your being clumsy.â Before she could so much as playfully frown or even crack a smile, a look of confusion took hold on the Princessâ features as the larger man adjusted he. âA-â She was quickly cut off with a gasp as her feet were lifted from the ground, her free arm coming to circle his neck in a bid to steady herself. âMy chambers, in the East wing. ...I am not even certain we have been properly introduced, but I am sure you make a habit of lifting up all the Princesses you run yourself into,â she laughed in almost disbelief.
Cristiana swept gracefully out of her carriage, pausing briefly to gaze at the castle. Pedroâs paranoia, justified though it had become, had confined her to a single suffocating corner of Portugal for the majority of her life. But her brother was dead, and the crown was hers. Since her coronation, Cristiana had taken every opportunity travel and further her nationâs diplomatic interests. Shaking away the thoughts of her past, the Queen greeted the person she came across with a smile.
                     âGood morrow.â
â⥠   News of  Portuguese arrival quickly reached Marieâs ears and instantly a sense of dread set in. She had no knowledge of whom exactly would be arriving, but as she swept her way down a grand stair case and towards the main entrance the mere sight of the carriage turned her stomach. Marie could hear the voice of her father within her head, remind her to remained poised, graceful and, above all, represent Valencia with all the propriety that her mother would. As the figure exited the carriage the Princess could at least breathe a sigh of relief as she lowered herself into a curtsy.
âGood morrow, your grace. I trust your journey was well?â
â Maddock paused in his tracks and looked back over his shoulder. He swallowed down the chunk of bread he held in his cheek. He sauntered over, leaning down to her feet, gently he took her ankle in his hand and exhaned it slightly. ââMy apologies. I didnae see youââ He looked up to her, a soft smile on his lips. ââIt only looks tah be a sprain..ââ He grunted as he pushed himself to his feet. ââWould ya like a lift?ââ
â⥠   The pain in Marieâs ankle felt it needed to be looked at, but she couldnât very well be lifting her skirts in a corridor to look herself, yet she felt ready to scold the man whom had knocked her as he leaned down to do just that. Lips parted but any words were cut off as she winced, closing her eyes briefly in the wait for the pain to subside. âWould that be the only downside to your height, senyor?â She asked while gently placing her foot back down against the stone. âI do beg your pardon, a lift?â Her voice was laced with confusion, her hand remaining on the window ledge as her posture straightened and she tried her best to ignore the pain.
â Maddock made his way through the halls, his palms stretched around some freshly made bread from the kitchen, chopping wood, doing labour, it created quite an appetite. Hungrily he devoured the breadrolls, swaggering down the halls, his shoulder caught someone elses, which had little impact on his path, but affected theirs.
â⥠    Soft palms held delicately, yet securely, onto a book of hours as the Princess of Valencia made her way through the corridors of French court. As always Marie had her wits about her, observing each person she passed and those she walked towards before slipping by, of course she had seen the taller male and made some effort to move aside but clearly it wasnât enough. Stumbling aside, her ankle made a sudden movement that caused quite some pain to shoot through it.Â
âHeavens, would you be more careful?â She hissed at the pain whilst moving to lean against a stone window ledge.
â ââHmmm..ââ She grinned as she tapped her finger against her chin. ââTall dark and handsome, Though I feel thatâs too much of a stretch for court?ââ She chuckled softly.Â
â⥠  âTall, dark and handsome is more common than you may think. Though it would be a miracle to find a suitor whom could also be intelligent and have the ability to hold a conversation.â She quietly hummed. â....Unless it is a handsome face but a silent man that you seek?â
â ââForgive me, I wasnât aware you were engaged.ââ She chuckled and looked back to Marie. ââIâm going to assume my invite was lost in the postââ She smiled and held her arm out for marie to link. ââIt was my fathers aim for me to find a match here at court.ââ She gave Marie a knowling look.
â⥠    âI am certain there would have been an invitation had the engagement not been some years,â she laughed briefly, shaking her head as she linked her arm with Astaâs. âI see. Well then, we best begin eyeing some suitors, shall we not?â Marie looked to the woman beside her with a slight smirk. âPreferences?â
âThe Tuscan countryside is simply beautiful, but you must visit Florence. Florence is truly a crown jewel. Our little court attracts artists and intellectualsâŠ. I cannot take much credit for it, but I am inordinately proud! I have never visited Spain. Is it much like Italy?â
â⥠    âIt certainly sounds like something worth being proud of, Duchess. Your suggestion is very kind, I will certainly be sure to visit your beautiful Florence the next time I should find myself close by. Valencia and Italy could be close in comparison I suppose, being by the ocean in Naples did greatly remind me of home. Though Rome itâs self seems to be in a world of itâs own.â
â ââHmmââ Asta hummed softly as her gaze rose to the ceiling. ââTo be Queenââ She grinned, looking back to Marie. ââProbably to marry, but thatâs not necessary⊠Yourself?ââ
â⥠  âI assume I shall be married some time within the year, I have been engaged to the crown Prince of Portugal for some time now and it must be time for the alliance to become official with our marriage,â she nodded with a sense of duty, hoping that would disguise her dread on the matter. âAre you promised to another or would that be your aim at court?â
âIndeed I am Italian- Eleanor de Medici, the Grand Duchess of Tuscany. France is certainly a lovely new experience, though little can compare to home for me. If any country comes close, though, France must be itâŠ. For the food, wine, and art, it is a fair match!â
â⥠  âThen it is indeed a pleasure to meet you, Duquessa. I must agree. I am certain there are many places in this blessed world of ours that are beautiful but, for me, none can hold a flame to my dear Valencia. Unfortunately I did only visit Rome and Naples during my visits to Italy, though I am told that Tuscany has itâs own charms.â
aaanything you can do           I can do better.
â"I personally did not partake, other than to taste the wine. Being from Italy, I certainly have a taste for wine, but I prefer not to overindulge. I myself retired early- I do hope the evening was not too debauched.âÂ
â⥠    âOh, you are Italian? I did very much enjoy the lands during my last visit though it was only brief. How does France treat you in comparison?â
Magdalena sighed. Her head ached, but she was determined not to coddle herself. âTwas her own fault, after all.
âWas this, then, your plan?â asked Magda with a wry smile. âTo get the entire castle drunk?â
â⥠  âMi? Certainly not, my lady, I merely contributed the wine being consumed. Surely there is no crime in wishing to see the many willed with joy and glee?â
 russiicn:
â⧠|  âI am one of the FEW.â The Duke replied, his accent          as heavy as his head felt.  âPerhaps I lie down later,          my lady. Sadly, advisors do not seem capable of the          common sympathies; are old men. Therefore, make          for very boring day.â
â⥠    âA boring day, at French court? I donât believe I have       ever heard of such thing,â The Valencian Princess         laughed briefly. âI do hope the dayâs business is not         awfully grueling, especially after an evening of such         high spirits.â
â ââAh, so you dinât intend fer it to be a gift, yer just gettin rid of the excess?ââ He raised his eyebrow at Marie, feighning hurt. He grinned, shaking his head before looking back to her. ââAh very much agree, Will ye be indulginâ in the drunk ând messy part?ââÂ
â⥠  âExcess? Heavens no, I could very well enjoy it all to myself over several books and many evenings of bliss full solitude. Alas propriety suggests I must socialize and so I thought I would share,â Marie smiled innocently, yet there was a usual twinkle of mischief in her eye. âDrunk perhaps some what, but I am not the messy type. I much prefer watching others be ridiculous, there is some fun to be had there. In a court such as this...I would not allow myself to act a fool for the pleasures of others. I MUCH prefer having the upper hand.â
âI am quite well, my lady,â answered Magdalena. She tried not to partake of wine terribly frequently, but the festivities had seemed to call for it. â"Though I must say, it DOES seem quite a bit too bright out today.âÂ
â⥠    âSome would say that is a sign of an evening well spent,â Marie said with an amused laugh. âWorry not, you wont be the only one at court feeling thus. In fact I believe you may be one of those better off.â
