She looked like she was made up in a dream.

“Then tell me –– what do you observe about me?” The prospect of Marilyn more or less studying him was amusing; he had always liked to be the center of attention, even as a young child. Maybe his therapist would tell him it was a way of subconsciously seeking emotional validation (from an absent father, perhaps?) but Lucas had always liked the feeling of eyes on him, watching. “An actress, huh? I think you told me that once. You look the type –– small and bubbly and that.” Lucas feigned deep thought, rubbing at his chin. “I wanna know… what’s the worst thing you’ve ever done? And I don’t mean little shit, like lying to your mama or something, like something really bad.” Even though he assumed he knew the answer, he asked anyway, a part of him longing for her to surprise him. “I mean,” he laughed, looking down at the cracks in the sidewalk. “I always wanted to be in a band, ever since I was little. I’m not very talented, mind you, but I always wanted to be. I liked –– still like music. A lot.” Silence. Just for a moment, something he rarely let happen. Silence made him uncomfortable, silence meant thinking but not saying it out loud. He shot up. “We can keep talking, but let’s walk somewhere, yeah?”
‘ Well...for starters... ‘ She kept her head down. ‘ When we first met I went to your room with you to...relax a bit and I took a note of your small collection of counter drugs...so I figured you might have dabbled a bit in em’ ‘ She felt pretty bad for having that as a mental note...she felt as though she overstepped boundaries. ‘ Which I owe you an apology...I shouldn’t have let my mind remember that. ‘ Glancing up his way she gave a small smile. ‘ Yes, yes sir I was an actress, some tell me I was the best in my day...I don’t think so. ‘ She shrugged once more. ‘ The worst I’ve done? Oh dear...well you see... ‘ She leaned over to him moving her hand up to cover her lips as she told him a secret. ‘ I stole a magazine once...the first magazine I had been on...Vogue. ‘ She smiled remembering it. Sitting back up properly she gasped. ‘ In a band? Oh Golly Gee...you must play something...sing me a tune, if I know it I’ll sing with you. C’mon...it can be fun. ‘ She encouraged lightly. She giggled softly in the silence, it was comfortable for her. As he shot up she squeaked toppling over slightly from the slight shock. ‘ Oh dear...S...sure! Just hold on...you gave me such a fright. --- ‘ She lightly clutched her chest.
“Oh, would you now?” He joked, the weight of her words bouncing off him like he allowed so many other things to. It wouldn’t be until later, after many pills and drinks, that what she said would really have any impact at all. “You might spend a lot of time with me, yeah, but that doesn’t mean you know everything about me. But you’re partially right –– I’m not too bad anymore. Maybe you’ve rubbed off a bit on me.” He feigned a sigh. “I’ll let you hold me to it. But you better believe I’ll hold you to it too. So tell me, what’s it you’re dying to know?” Smirking, he ran a hand through his hair. “You just fishing for compliments now? Really though, ‘course I think you’re cute. Look at you, you’re adorable.”
‘ Indeed I would. ‘ She nodded once with a smile on her lips confirming. She kept her hands under her small frame. She needed to keep them at her sides or she would probably reach out and touch him, more specifically his hand. ‘ I know a decent amount...and well, you see, the things you don’t tell I know from observing. Observing and memorization. I was an actress once you know...memorizing is what I ddi for a living. ‘ She winked with a smile. ‘ Say, that’s a good thing you know, me rubbin’ off goodness on ya. I will take credit for that any day you hear? ‘ She blushed once more. ‘ Anything you wanna know...I’ll tell ya, I swear I will, you name it and I’ll lay it on you...just hope you’re ready. ‘ She lightly tapped the heels of her Mary jane’s on the street as she sat in thought. ‘ I’d like to know...what you wanted to be if you were still livin’, what your aspirations and dreams were...share a few? ‘ She lightly nudged him again. With his compliment about her being adorable she couldn’t stop the grin that set on her features. It was wide enough to show her deep dimples. ‘ Oh stop it you...you’re flattering me too much I tell ya. --- ‘
Marilyn and her infamous white roller skates
As soon as her hand left his mouth he rolled his eyes, a smile still in place. “Listen, I’ll say what I want, when I want, and no one can stop me.” He shot her a look and raised his eyebrows. “Not even you.” At her request Lucas simply shook his head, reciprocating her nudge. “Nope, no way. I don’t wanna corrupt you –– you’re too good. Besides, you wouldn’t be interested in the misadventures of a drug-induced sex addict, would you?” Feigning seriousness for a moment, he studied her expression, cocking his head to the side. “Nah, I’m just kidding. I was bad, am bad, but not that bad… But feel free to ask all the questions you want.” He let the fabric fall to the ground and attempted to listen intently, despite his disinterest in clothing. “Oh I don’t doubt you were the best costumer. Probably thought you were cute too.”
‘ We’ll see. ‘ She commented back at his remarks of no one stopping him and such. She liked to think she would have that much of an effect on him, even if it wasn’t the one she particularly wanted. She gave him a look of mock shock, then scoffed as the words fell from his lips. ‘ I would in fact...anything you have to say I’d listen, don’t you know. ‘ She blushed once more, her worlds holding nothing but the truth. ‘ Look here slick, I know you aren’t that bad...I spend the most time with you in this hotel...I’d like to think I know ya pretty well, I do. ‘ She smiled before nudging him again. ‘ But...I’ll hold ya to that offer...to ask you anything I want...I suppose i’d only be right to give you the same courtesy, right? ‘ As he let the fabric go, she scooped the remaining bits back under her, lightly placing her hands in her lap. One thing he said particularly caught her attention. ‘ You think I’m cute huh? --- ‘
Lucas threw his head back and laughed, a sound stemming from pure incredulity. “What, you don’t like it when I say ‘fuck’ or ‘asshole’?” His smile wasn’t malicious, but it almost adopted a cheshire cat quality as he added, “You better not ask what other bad things I do, then. I don’t think you could handle it.” Eyes lingering for a moment on her face, he knitted his brows together and reached down, rubbing the material of her skirt between his thumb and forefinger. “Is this expensive? I wouldn’t know. I mean, it looks nice and all…”
As he laughed, she just sat back with her lips parted. His laugh was infectious and within seconds, she too was in a fit of laugher. Even if she didn’t even know what it was they were exactly laughing at. She then shook her head as he said the words again. Using a free hand she lightly covered his mouth so he wouldn’t say anymore. ‘ Nope...nu uh! ‘ She giggled moving her hand slowly. His second comment on the matter made her raise her brows. ‘ Now you’ve gotten me curious....I’ll lend you my ear to tell me a thing or two and I promise not to judge. ‘ She lightly leaned in bumping her shoulder to his. The blush on her cheeks wasn’t going anywhere anytime soon, so she embraced it the best she could. Feeling the light tug on the fabric of her skirt she picked up a small side rubbing the pads of her index and thumb fingers along it as she sat in thought. ‘ Say...it did cost a pretty penny..30 bucks exactly I remember. ‘ She then leaned in to whisper. ‘ 25 because I was the store owners best customer. --- ‘ She winked sitting back up right.
“It’s fine, don’t apologize.” Jumbled, words spilling out like he had marbles in his mouth. Marilyn was sweet, far sweeter than anyone he had ever come across, and he reached out and placed a hand on her shoulder, turning her to face him. “Well they seem like a bunch of assholes, so it shouldn’t matter what they think –– got it?” Clearing his throat, his usual composure snapped back into place, only momentarily askew. “I did forget. Feels nice.” He sat on the sidewalk, tilting his face towards the sky. “S’like being little again.”
She went to apologize once more, but held it back. Instead she gave him a small smile. His assuring hand on her shoulder made her blush and tilt her head away slightly to hide it. ‘ Thank you...I appreciate that don’t you know. ‘ She finally found the words to speak. ‘ Such dirty language isn’t good...but I will promise to try and not let it bother me so. ‘ She lightly bit her lip blushing once more as he moved away from her. She contemplated sitting on the sidewalk, however she didn’t want to dirty her favorite skirt. Then her thoughts shifted on the fact that she was outside...she didn’t know for how long...so why not? Taking a seat next to him she couldn’t help but giggle to herself. ‘ If my dear mother...may she rest in peace, could see me now..she’d be absolutely mortified that I was sitting on the ground in my good clothes! --- ‘
“Oh shit –– don’t cry… it’s okay.” Lucas did feel out of place, but not for the same reason she did. It was emotion he wasn’t good with, never had been. Raw emotion was like an anomaly to him, he felt powerless and uncomfortable. The right thing to do, he knew, was to reach out a hand and comfort her, but instead he stood there, looking slightly away, the tips of his ears turning red as he scratched the back of his neck. “It’s a good thing, really. Don’t be upset. I’ll – we can go inside if you want.”
‘ I’m sorry...I don’t mean to cry I swear it. ‘ She sniffed softly into the soft cloth she held between her fingers. ‘ I don’t want to go back inside oddly...I thought I would want to...but now that I’m outside...I don’t want to go back in for a long while. ‘ She looked down at her attire. ‘ I’m just y’know..nervous...some modern gals made fun of my clothes, hair and the way I spoke...I don’t want to be made fun of out here because I’m outta place...that’s all. ‘ She tried her best to explain. Wiping her eyes she slowly took another step, then a few more until she was beside her new friend and the sun kissed every inch of skin that was exposed onto it. ‘ I forgot what this felt like...did you? --- ‘
“It’s okay, I don’t know what the fuck a facebook is either!” It felt like he called the statement over his shoulder, he was so emotionally far out. All he could see, all he could feel or focus on was the sun, even if the rays filtered right through him onto the sidewalk. “Look!” Lucas whirled around to face Marilyn, but stopped short when he saw her expression. “Hey –– you okay?”
She herself zoned out as she looked around at the sky. She used to dream about the hot sun on her skin like it did once before. However, she felt like all of that was behind her since her untimely death. Taking another step she gasped softly as her foot hit the pavement, the sun kissing her ice cold skin. As Lucas looked at her and spoke, she turned her attention to him nodding, though a tear slipped from her eye. ‘ Y...yes...I’m sorry I just...I forgot what it felt like to be outside...I..I don’t know what to do out here and I can’t help but feel out of place...you know what I mean...? --- ‘ She lightly sniffed grabbing a handkerchief from her pocket.
Choosing to ignore both her protests and mention of a previous relationship –– Lucas wasn’t good at addressing either, visible emotion made him squirm –– he pulled her along. “Listen, it’ll be fun. Haven’t you been cooped up in here long enough? What’s the worst that could happen? We’re already in the ground.” Through the revolving doors and out into the sun, Lucas pretended he was alive again, opened his arms and spun around, laughter bubbling in his throat like it hadn’t in a long time. He was so distracted he didn’t even bother to see if Marilyn had followed.
‘ I...I...I don’t know... ‘ She protested again. However, her protests were in vain as he continued to pull her along. ‘ I don’t know what to do out in this day and age..This generation has this thing called a facebook! A face that is a book you know...it’s scary! ‘ He kept pulling her along and through the revolving doors they went. She expected to be shot back into a random room in the hotel, instead the sunlight met her features. She hesitantly stepped forward onto the sidewalk just taking a moment to soak in the fact that she was...outside. She was...free.
“Friend?” Lucas raised an eyebrow, hovering somewhere on the line between judgement and harmless curiosity. “Doesn’t seem too kind of him, not if you can’t ever find ‘em.” Her blush was nothing alien to him –– he knew, or told himself he knew, how to prompt any reaction out of anyone. But still, he smiled. “Wait –– we can?” At the news Lucas shot up, and with the enthusiasm of someone much younger, grabbed Marilyn’s hand and pulled her out of her seat. “Fuck! That’s the best news I’ve heard all year. C’mon!”
‘ Well you see...he wasn’t exactly my friend...more like my boyfriend...but we broke up due to him leaving. ‘ She looked down, her little non beating heart was still pretty broken over the whole thing. Lightly swinging her feet she used her hands to press the wrinkles out of her skirt. ‘ Eventually I found them....weeks later. ‘ She mentioned glancing up at the male when his realization hit. She gasped when he jumped up and squeaked when he pulled her to follow. ‘ Oh! I.....I can’t...It’s....it’s frightening out there...everything is...well...different... --- ‘ She gave multiple excuses, her nerves about going outside bubbling up.

@arianagrande All I have to say is basically if performing, singing, acting, and dancing is what you want to do, then you just have to do it - no matter where it is.
